An iPhone wallpaper can look dim because the screen is locked, Always-On Display is active, brightness or color settings have changed its appearance, or the phone is warm. If only the Home Screen looks blurry, check its separate wallpaper settings: Apple provides a Blur option for that screen. Compare the Lock Screen and Home Screen, check the display while unlocked, and try another photo to narrow down the cause.
First, identify which screen and state look different
Compare the Lock Screen with the phone unlocked, then compare both with other screen content. This separates a wallpaper-specific effect from a display-wide change.
- Dim only while locked or idle: On supported models, Always-On Display intentionally shows a dimmed Lock Screen. Its behavior can vary with conditions: Apple says it may turn off when the phone is face down or obstructed, away from a paired Apple Watch, during CarPlay or Continuity Camera use, while Low Power Mode or Sleep Focus is active, or at the usual bedtime. - Dim while using the phone, too: Check brightness, display settings, and temperature in the sections below.
- Blurry only on the Home Screen: Check the Home Screen’s Blur customization.
- One photo looks soft, but other content does not: Compare the source image in Photos and try a different wallpaper.
Always-On Display is not available on every iPhone. Feature availability depends on the model.
Adjust brightness and check automatic changes
Change brightness in Control Center or go to Settings > Display & Brightness. Auto-Brightness is a separate control under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Apple says the ambient-light sensor lowers brightness in dark surroundings and raises it in brighter ones. If automatic adjustment seems incorrect, Apple recommends turning Auto-Brightness off and back on. The steps are in Apple’s brightness and color-temperature guide.

Check color and accessibility display settings
A wallpaper can seem washed out or different in color without being out of focus. Temporarily switch off True Tone or Night Shift to compare the appearance. True Tone adapts color and intensity to ambient light; Night Shift makes screen colors warmer.

- Reduce White Point tones down bright colors and can make the display seem less vivid.
- Color Filters can change how images appear.
- Reduce Transparency changes certain transparent backgrounds to opaque ones. It does not sharpen a photo.

Turn off Home Screen wallpaper blur
iPhone lets you customize the Lock Screen and Home Screen separately, so one can look different from the other by design. If the wallpaper is blurry only on the Home Screen, go to Settings > Wallpaper, customize the Home Screen, and check the Blur option. Test the photo and optional Lock Screen effects
Open the image in Photos and compare it with the wallpaper preview. Then try another image. If the softness follows just one photo, the source image or its fit on the screen may be responsible; if multiple photos and other screen content look affected, revisit display settings instead.
On iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26, eligible photos can use Spatial Scene for a 3D effect on the Lock Screen. It is optional and applies only in supported situations; its availability does not mean that every soft-looking wallpaper is caused by Spatial Scene. Let a warm iPhone cool down
Apple says that if an iPhone gets too warm, it may dim the display and reduce maximum brightness until it cools. If the whole screen remains dim across apps and settings after the device cools, follow Apple’s guidance for screen issues rather than assuming the wallpaper file is defective.
