TalkTalk customers, for example, were told by Ofcom on 5 October 2026 that they remain TalkTalk customers and need take no immediate action. If your provider later changes your terms, bill, connection or support, check the written notice against your contract before deciding whether to complain or switch.
Does a takeover change your broadband contract?
Not automatically. An ownership announcement is different from a change to your individual contract. Ofcom’s advice for TalkTalk customers following BT Group’s announced acquisition, published 5 October 2026, said customers remained TalkTalk customers and did not need to do anything differently. At that time, Ofcom said there would be no change to price, contract, billing access or normal service during the transition and beyond. It also said BT would contact affected customers with clear notice and support if anything changed in future. This advice is specific to TalkTalk and the position described on that date; it is not a guarantee that every takeover will have the same outcome or that terms can never change. Read Ofcom’s TalkTalk acquisition advice.
You do not need to switch simply because you have heard that a provider is being taken over. First work out whether anything has actually changed for you.
- Ownership only: the provider has announced a transaction, but your bill, contract, connection and support arrangements appear unchanged.
- Billing or branding: the name or contact details on a bill or email have changed. Check that the notice is genuine and ask the provider to confirm whether any contractual terms are changing.
- Price or contract: you have received a new price, revised terms or a notice giving an effective date.
- Service or support: your connection has deteriorated, or the process for getting help or repairs appears different.
What to check if your bill or contract changes
Save the takeover announcement, any letter or email about your account, your latest bill, your contract summary and the original contract terms. Ask the provider to explain the change in writing, including when it takes effect, the contractual basis for it and whether you can leave without an exit fee. Then compare its explanation with what you agreed to.

Changes to contract terms
For residential and small-business customers covered by Ofcom’s guidance, a detrimental change to contract terms generally requires at least one month’s notice and a right to leave without penalty. Exceptions include changes made solely for your benefit, administrative changes that do not negatively affect you, and changes directly imposed by law. A price rise that was clearly stated when you signed does not, by itself, give you a penalty-free exit right when that agreed increase takes effect. See Ofcom’s contract guidance.
Business customers with more than ten employees may not have the same protections under this consumer guidance. Business contracts may also set out service-level agreements for support and resolution, so check the terms that apply to your business.

Price rises
The rules depend partly on when you signed and what your contract says. Contracts made from January 2025 must state any included price increases in pounds and pence and say when they will happen; providers cannot specify those increases using an inflation link or percentage. Contracts signed before 17 January 2025 may still contain inflation-linked or percentage-based terms.
If the provider raises your price beyond what you agreed, or the increase was not specified in the contract, Ofcom says it must give at least 30 days’ notice and a 30-day window to leave without exit fees. That is different from an increase clearly included in your contract, which does not automatically create a right to leave without penalty when it takes effect. Check the wording and dates in your own agreement. Read Ofcom’s guidance on telecoms price rises.

What to do about a service or support change
Record what has changed and when: for example, outages, slower or unreliable service, repair delays, or a changed support route. Keep relevant bills, notices and complaint correspondence. Ask the provider to explain the change and what it will do to resolve the problem. If you are a business customer, check whether your contract includes service-level commitments for support or repairs.
When comparing whether to stay, seek a remedy or switch, consider the total price now and after any scheduled increase, your remaining minimum term and any exit charges, the connection quality available at your address, support and repair terms, and the alternative provider’s availability and contract length. Check current availability and offers for your own address rather than assuming another provider can deliver the same service.

- Unlock the Full Potential of WiFi 6 - Opening the 6 GHz band will change the game for WiFi 6. WiFi 6 brings about upgraded performance in network efficiency and capacity. Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential
How to complain if the provider does not resolve it
- Complain to the provider first. Describe the specific price, contract, service or support problem and say what outcome you want. Ask for a complaint reference.
- Keep a record. Save the reference number, bills, contract documents, notices and replies, along with the dates you contacted the provider.
- Escalate to free alternative dispute resolution (ADR) if eligible. You can use the provider’s ADR scheme after six weeks from your original complaint or when you receive a deadlock letter. The schemes named by Ofcom are CISAS and the Communications Ombudsman; ask your provider which one it belongs to.
Ofcom can use customer reports to inform its work, but it does not decide individual complaints. See Ofcom’s complaint and ADR guidance.
Should you switch broadband provider?
Switch if another available deal better suits your needs, not simply because an acquisition has been announced. Before agreeing to move, check your current contract’s end date and whether leaving before the minimum term expires could trigger early termination charges. Compare the alternative’s full price, any scheduled increases, contract length, service availability at your address, and support terms.
