How does Starlink make money? Mostly through recurring broadband subscriptions, with additional revenue from customer terminals and kits, plus connectivity contracts for businesses, governments, aircraft, ships, vehicles, and remote sites. SpaceX reported that consumer subscribers generated more than 60% of its Connectivity segment revenue in 2025. That is a segment figure—not a complete Starlink-only income statement.

Starlink’s main revenue streams

Starlink’s model combines recurring service fees with hardware sales and specialized connectivity contracts. The streams differ in how customers pay and how predictable the revenue may be.

Revenue stream Who pays How the charge is structured
Consumer broadband Households and other individual subscribers Recurring monthly subscription; fee varies by geographic market and service plan, including download speed. SpaceX reported that consumer subscribers generated more than 60% of Connectivity segment revenue in 2025. SpaceX SEC-filed disclosure
Kits and user terminals Customers who need Starlink equipment Sale of physical customer-side hardware, including kits and terminals. Specific models, bundles, and prices vary; the cited filings do not establish one universal price. SpaceX EU prospectus, June 5, 2026
Enterprise, government, and mobile connectivity Organizations, public-sector customers, and operators of aircraft, vessels, vehicles, and remote sites Contracts may be based on subscriptions, data use, capacity, or other negotiated terms. Starlink aviation support: monthly fees

Consumer subscriptions: the recurring core

Households pay a recurring fee for broadband service. SpaceX says monthly charges vary by geographic market and download speed, so a price shown for one country or plan should not be treated as a global or permanent Starlink price. SpaceX SEC-filed disclosure

In its 2025 reporting, SpaceX said consumer subscribers accounted for more than 60% of Connectivity segment revenue. The remaining portion is not a disclosed exact split among hardware, enterprise, government, or other categories; the available figures do not support assigning precise shares to each.

Kits and terminals: hardware alongside service

Starlink service requires customer-side equipment, and SpaceX discusses Starlink kits, user-terminal production, and development spending on kits and ground equipment in its filings. The hardware is a real part of the customer transaction, distinct from the monthly service charge. The sources do not establish a single kit model, bundle, or price for all markets and dates. Business, government, and mobile customers

Organizations can buy connectivity for settings where conventional networks may not meet their needs. SpaceX identifies aviation, maritime, land mobility, fixed sites, and government entities among its managed enterprise and government customers. Terms can depend on subscriptions, data consumption, capacity, or other contract conditions; there is no universal enterprise price established by the cited disclosures. SpaceX SEC-filed disclosure

Why subscriber growth does not always mean higher revenue per customer

Customer count and average revenue per subscriber (ARPU) can move in opposite directions when a company expands into markets with lower-priced plans. For the three months ended March 31, 2026, SpaceX reported Starlink subscriber growth of 104.7% year over year and a 22.9% year-over-year decline in Starlink Subscriber ARPU. It attributed the ARPU decline primarily to international expansion and the addition of lower-priced service plans. That does not mean every customer’s bill fell by 22.9%; it reflects the reported average across a changing mix of markets and plans. SpaceX EU prospectus, June 5, 2026

SpaceX also reported that first-quarter 2026 consumer revenue growth reflected a sharp increase in subscribers while ARPU declined. Increased aviation, maritime, and other enterprise revenue, as well as mobile connectivity, contributed to growth; lower government connectivity revenue partly offset it. These figures show why customer mix and business demand matter alongside subscriber totals. SpaceX EU prospectus, June 5, 2026

Revenue is not the same as profit

Revenue must cover the cost of building, launching, and operating the network, as well as serving customers. SpaceX reported Connectivity segment operating income of $4.423 billion in 2025, $2.006 billion in 2024, and $469 million in 2023. The company attributed the 2025 increase primarily to consumer and enterprise customer growth, partly offset by higher depreciation from more Starlink flights and higher marketing and international expansion costs. The Connectivity figures are segment-level disclosures, not a full standalone Starlink income statement. SpaceX EU prospectus, June 5, 2026

Costs that determine how much revenue remains

SpaceX’s reported cost drivers show why a growing subscriber base does not translate directly into earnings. The company identifies several recurring operating and investment expenses:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Satellite and launch depreciation: Capitalized launch and satellite costs are depreciated over time. SpaceX reported a $276 million increase in this depreciation in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the first quarter of 2025.
  • Ground operations and customer service: In the same year-over-year comparison, SpaceX reported increases of $50 million in ground operating costs and $42 million in customer support and installation.
  • Transaction and logistics costs: The comparison also included increases of $19 million in payment processor fees, $15 million in freight, and $12 million in warranty costs.
  • Research and expansion: SpaceX reported research and development for next-generation satellites, Starlink kits, and ground equipment, as well as higher marketing and international expansion spending.

Those figures are SpaceX’s reported first-quarter year-over-year increases, not a per-subscriber cost schedule. The filing does not provide a simple lifetime cost per subscriber or a complete standalone Starlink cost model. SpaceX says constellation scale and its vertically integrated supply chain have helped reduce user-terminal production costs. SpaceX EU prospectus, June 5, 2026

What the published figures do—and do not—show

The figures establish that subscriptions are the largest disclosed component of Connectivity revenue and that the segment reported rising operating income in 2023–2025. They do not establish an exact Starlink-only revenue split or an income statement isolating Starlink from the broader Connectivity segment. Nor do the cited sources substantiate a separate Starlink advertising revenue stream.
