How do I use F4 instead of brightness or volume?
- Check the F4 key legend. Look for a brightness, volume, microphone, or other symbol printed on the key. That symbol indicates a special top-row action, but it does not establish the mapping on every laptop.
- Press Fn+F4. Microsoft Support explains that on keyboards with an Fn key, holding Fn while pressing a key invokes its alternate command. If F4 alone changes brightness or volume, Fn+F4 is the likely way to send the other command.
- Check Fn Lock if the result is reversed. Fn Lock can switch which behavior is primary. The toggle varies by keyboard: for example, Dell documents Fn+Esc on certain laptop models, but that shortcut is not universal. Consult your model’s manual before using a lock combination or changing a BIOS setting.

Why does F4 do something different on another laptop?
F4 has no single special-action assignment across laptops. The printed legend, the default top-row mode, and the Fn Lock control vary by model. Official examples illustrate the difference:

How do I turn off Fn Lock?
There is no universal Fn Lock switch or shortcut. Some keyboards have an Fn Lock key or indicator; Dell documents Fn+Esc as a toggle on certain models, while some Dell systems manage the behavior through BIOS. Microsoft’s guidance also describes Fn or F Lock behavior on its keyboards, and Surface layouts vary. Use the official instructions for your exact model rather than trying a shortcut based on another laptop.
How do I use F4 in Windows or an app?
If you need F4 for a software shortcut rather than a top-row action, use the key combination that sends the standard function-key command on your keyboard—often Fn+F4 when special actions are the default. The application may define its own shortcut. Where can I confirm my laptop’s F4 mapping?
Find the full model name from the laptop’s label, system information, or manufacturer support page, then open that model’s official manual or keyboard-function guide. Check the F4 legend, which behavior is primary, how Fn Lock works, and whether the BIOS offers a function-key setting. The examples above are model-specific and should not be used as substitutes for your own manual.
