Before buying HDFC Bank shares, check the price you would pay against sustainable earnings and book value, then assess asset quality, deposit funding, profitability, capital, dividends and governance. Strong bank results do not by themselves make the shares attractive at every price. The latest quarterly figures identified here are for the quarter ended 30 June 2026; market prices and valuation multiples change, so verify the exchange quote before making a decision.

1. Is the share price reasonable for the bank’s likely returns?

Start with valuation, but do not treat a single ratio as a verdict. For banks, price-to-book (P/B) is useful when read alongside return on equity (ROE), asset quality and capital needs: the book value is meaningful only if the bank can earn sustainably on it. Price-to-earnings (P/E) can help too, but the earnings measure and comparison date must be clear.

Use comparable dates and earnings

The NSE peer-comparison snapshot broadcast on 4 October 2026 displayed a price of ₹731.95 and a P/E of 13.88. That is a dated snapshot, not a live price for 7 October. Do not use it as today’s quote or combine it casually with another period’s earnings to present a current multiple.

HDFC Bank reported FY26 basic EPS of ₹48.62 in its Integrated Annual Report 2025–26. A P/E calculated from a market price and that EPS would need to state the price date and confirm the share basis and earnings period. The bank’s share capital changed after its 1:1 bonus issue in 2025, so historical per-share figures must be adjusted consistently before comparing them with current figures.

Build a fair comparison

Compare HDFC Bank with relevant listed banks and its own history using the same valuation date, reporting period and definitions. A premium may be justified by stronger expected growth or more durable profitability; a discount may reflect weaker growth prospects, higher funding costs, credit risks, capital needs or governance concerns. Neither a lower P/E nor a lower P/B alone proves a share is cheap.

  • For P/B, compare with sustainable ROE, asset quality and capital requirements.
  • For P/E, use normalized, comparable earnings and identify material one-off items.
  • For peer comparisons, align dates, share bases, reporting periods and ratio definitions.

2. Are bad loans and credit costs moving in the right direction?

Review both gross and net non-performing assets (NPAs), their direction over multiple quarters, and the provisions the bank holds against potential losses. At 30 June 2026, HDFC Bank reported gross NPA of 1.17% of gross advances and net NPA of 0.41% of net advances. Gross NPA was 1.15% at 31 March 2026 and 1.40% at 30 June 2025, according to the bank’s Q1 FY27 results release.

The same release separately reported a 0.91% gross NPA ratio excluding agricultural NPAs. Keep that adjusted figure distinct from the headline 1.17% ratio: the exclusion changes what is counted, so it is not a substitute for the headline measure.

Read the ratios with provisions and credit cost

The FY26 annual report stated provision coverage of 67.2%; the Q1 FY27 release reported a credit cost ratio of 0.40%. These measures add context to NPA levels: ask whether repayments appear durable and whether provisions could absorb higher losses if economic conditions weaken. One quarter’s NPA ratio cannot answer those questions on its own.

3. Are earnings supported by healthy margins and funding?

Look at net interest income (NII), net interest margin (NIM), operating efficiency and the mix and cost of deposits. These indicators connect lending and funding economics to the bank’s earnings.

Separate reported growth from adjusted comparisons

For Q1 FY27, HDFC Bank reported NII of ₹335.3 billion, up 6.7% year over year. NIM was 3.26% on total assets and 3.40% on interest-earning assets; the cost-to-income ratio was 39.2%. Compare the direction of these measures over several periods rather than assuming one quarter establishes a trend.

The year-earlier Q1 comparison included ₹91.3 billion in transaction gains from a partial divestment in HDB Financial Services. The bank reported Q1 FY27 profit after tax (PAT) growth of 5.0%, and approximately 9.8% growth after adjustments for prior-year transaction gains, one-off provisions and tax credits. Those are different comparisons: do not present the adjusted figure as if it were reported growth. For broader context, the FY26 annual report stated that PAT grew 10.9%.

Check deposits as well as loans

At 30 June 2026, deposits were up 14.7% year over year. CASA deposits—current and savings accounts—grew 9.4%, while time deposits grew 17.4%; CASA represented 32.3% of total deposits. Track this mix alongside loan growth and margins. Faster deposit growth can support lending, but its composition and cost matter to profitability.

4. Does the bank have capital for losses and growth?

Capital ratios indicate a bank’s capacity to absorb losses and support its business, but a buffer does not eliminate credit, market, liquidity or execution risks. In its Q1 FY27 results release, HDFC Bank reported the following capital ratios at 30 June 2026 and cited a regulatory capital requirement of 11.9%.

Measure At 30 June 2026
Total capital adequacy 19.6%
Tier 1 capital adequacy 17.8%
CET1 17.4%
Regulatory capital requirement cited by the bank 11.9%

Consider these figures with shareholder returns and future capital needs. The FY26 annual report stated ROE of 14.3%; a high capital buffer does not automatically translate into attractive returns for shareholders.

5. What does the dividend tell you—and what does it not?

For FY26, HDFC Bank said total dividend would be ₹15.50 per ₹1 equity share: a ₹2.50 special interim dividend paid in August 2025 and a ₹13 final dividend recommended by the board, subject to shareholder approval at the forthcoming AGM. The NSE page later showed a ₹13 dividend with an ex-date and record date of 19 June 2026. A board recommendation, shareholder approval, record date and payment are distinct stages; check the relevant company and exchange disclosures for the status you need.

Assess dividends against earnings, payout sustainability, capital and the bank’s reinvestment needs. To calculate yield, use a contemporaneous share price and confirm that the dividend and price use a consistent per-share basis, including any necessary adjustment for the 2025 bonus issue. A high displayed yield can result from a falling share price and does not guarantee future distributions.

6. What should you verify about governance?

Governance checks should include official disclosures about board and management changes, and the bank’s stated explanations. In a 24 March 2026 statement about the resignation of part-time chairman and independent director Atanu Chakraborty, HDFC Bank attributed this account to chairman Keki Mistry: “Based on our discussions there were no specific happenings and practices that were brought to our attention.” This is the chairman’s account of the board’s understanding at that time; it is not an independent investigation or conclusive proof that no governance issue existed.

Review later official exchange disclosures before forming a view about the current governance picture. Consider governance and management continuity alongside financial measures rather than treating an issuer statement as independent verification.

7. A practical pre-purchase checklist

  1. Refresh the quote. Use a current exchange price, not the 4 October 2026 NSE snapshot, for any valuation or yield calculation.
  2. Set the comparison basis. Align the price date, earnings period, share basis and ratio definitions for HDFC Bank, peers and historical comparisons.
  3. Check valuation against returns. Read P/B with ROE, capital generation and asset quality; use normalized earnings for P/E.
  4. Inspect credit quality over time. Track headline gross and net NPAs, provisions, provision coverage, credit costs and segment mix; label any adjusted ratio clearly.
  5. Test earnings and funding trends. Review NII, NIM, cost-to-income, deposit growth and CASA mix, distinguishing reported profit growth from adjusted comparisons.
  6. Assess resilience and distributions. Put capital ratios and dividend plans in context with potential losses, reinvestment and capital needs.
  7. Read current disclosures. Check official company and exchange filings for updates relevant to dividends, governance and management.

HDFC Bank’s investor-relations financial-results index lists Q1 FY27 materials and FY26 annual results. The bank stated that the quarterly accounts were subject to a limited review by its statutory auditors; a limited review is not the same as an audit of the quarter.
