Yes—but only when the cable is rated for each part of the route. Outdoor exposure, direct burial, and installation inside a wall or air-handling space are different requirements. An “outdoor” label alone does not establish that a cable can be buried or used in every interior location.
Choose cable for every part of the route
A run may pass through several environments: outdoors in sun or rain, underground, through a wall, or into a riser or air-handling space. Check the cable’s jacket markings and manufacturer installation specifications against each environment. Cable designations indicate particular applications under the relevant code framework; UL Solutions notes that CMX cable marked for outdoor use is suitable for outdoor installation on dwellings. That does not make all outdoor cable suitable for every indoor space or for burial. UL Solutions explains communications cable markings and applications.
- Exposed outdoors: Confirm the manufacturer specifies outdoor or wet-location use and sunlight resistance for the product.
- Underground: Confirm direct-burial suitability explicitly, and follow any requirements for conduit, armor, or other protection.
- Inside a building: Check that the listing is appropriate for the actual interior location, such as a general-use area, riser, or plenum.
Outdoor-rated does not automatically mean direct-burial rated
Product specifications can distinguish sharply between outdoor use and burial. Belden describes its OSP6U Cat 6 outside-plant cable as suitable for outdoor wet locations and Ethernet applications, but says direct burial is not recommended without additional crush and impact protection. Belden’s IEA001 is listed as CMR/CMX-Outdoor and sunlight resistant, yet its product specifications state, “Not Suitable for Direct Burial.” Belden IEA001 product specifications. These examples show why checking the exact product matters: “outdoor” does not settle whether a cable can go in a trench.

Check the rating before running cable through walls
Once a cable enters a building, its outdoor rating may not be enough. Cable passing through a wall, a vertical riser, or an air-handling space may need a listing suited to that location. Eaton distinguishes CMX outdoor cable from CMR riser and CMP plenum cable; verify the actual cable marking and the route rather than inferring suitability from an outdoor label. Do not assume a wall cavity is a plenum or that every wall cavity has the same requirements. The route and locally adopted rules determine what applies. If you cannot identify the space or cable listing, ask a qualified installer to check before pulling the cable.

Plan the building entry as a transition
Where an outside-plant cable enters a building, plan a suitable entry and transition point rather than simply extending the exterior cable through the structure. Belden recommends an entrance demarcation point for the cited OSP cable products. The appropriate cable listing, enclosure, and any protections depend on the product and installation. Code requirements vary with jurisdiction, adopted edition, building, cable, and route. NFPA’s 2025 NEC public input response includes proposed language describing a conditional allowance for certain unlisted outside-plant communications cable inside a building, with a 15 m (50 ft) limit and conditions involving termination in an enclosure or on a listed primary protector. That is proposed code language, not proof of a rule currently adopted where you live. Use this route checklist before installation
- Trace the complete path. Mark which sections are exposed to weather or sun, underground, inside walls, or in a riser or air-handling space.
- Match the product to each section. Check the jacket marking and the manufacturer’s specifications for wet-location, sunlight, burial, and interior-space suitability.
- Follow physical-protection instructions. If the cable will be buried, check whether the manufacturer requires added crush and impact protection. Conduit may protect against physical damage, but it does not turn an indoor-only cable into an outdoor-rated one.
- Plan the building entry. Check the product’s entry or demarcation guidance and determine what enclosure or other protections the installation requires.
- Verify local requirements. Ask the local authority or a qualified electrician or low-voltage installer when the route crosses between buildings, the required protection is unclear, or the cable’s markings do not clearly cover the path.
When to get a professional review
A specific installation cannot be assessed from cable type alone: the jurisdiction, adopted code edition, building, route, and exact product all matter. Get local guidance before proceeding if the run crosses between separate buildings, passes through a space whose rating requirements you cannot identify, or depends on interpreting entrance, bonding, or protection rules. A qualified professional can assess the actual route and locally applicable requirements.
