Satellite images usually do not show a city directly through soil. Instead, archaeologists look for indirect surface clues—such as differences in vegetation, soil moisture, roughness, or landform—that buried walls, ditches, roads, and water channels may create. Those clues help identify places to investigate; they do not confirm a buried city on their own.
What satellite images can—and cannot—show
Optical satellites record reflected light in visible and other spectral bands. A buried feature can affect the soil or water available to plants, producing a difference in crop growth or vegetation color. It may also leave a contrast in soil appearance or a faint surface mark. Researchers map such patterns as possible traces of structures or land use, then compare them with other images and evidence.
Radar satellites measure microwave energy returned from the surface. Differences in moisture, surface roughness, or the scattering pattern of larger structures can make some features stand out. That does not mean radar routinely sees through soil: what it reveals depends on the target, ground conditions, and landscape. Forest cover, cultivated fields, and arid terrain each present different challenges.
A satellite image therefore offers a clue about a landscape, not a direct underground photograph. An apparent street, wall, or settlement pattern remains a hypothesis until other methods support its interpretation.

How archaeologists turn an image into a map
- Choose imagery for the question. Optical imagery can help show vegetation and surface contrasts; radar can reveal some differences associated with moisture, roughness, or large structures. The target, vegetation, terrain, cloud conditions, and scale all matter.
- Look for patterns across images. Researchers compare sensors or observations from different dates to distinguish persistent forms from transient conditions such as shadows, seasonal vegetation, or surface moisture.
- Map candidate features. Repeated lines, shapes, or landform patterns may suggest walls, roads, ditches, channels, or settlement areas. They should be recorded as potential features rather than confirmed archaeology.
- Check the interpretation on the ground or with other methods. Field walking, GPS mapping, geophysical survey, terrain models, and—where appropriate—excavation can test whether a visible pattern has an archaeological explanation.
Combining methods is especially useful because each answers a different question. Imagery can help locate patterns across a broad area; field survey can document surface finds; geophysics can test for buried structures; and excavation can establish what a feature is in a particular place.
Which remote-sensing method is suited to which clue?
| Method | What it measures | What it may help reveal | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optical satellite imagery | Reflected light in visible and other spectral bands | Vegetation or soil contrasts associated with buried features | Cloud and shadow can hide the ground; a surface contrast is not proof of an archaeological feature. |
| Radar satellite imagery | Microwave backscatter from the surface | Some differences in soil moisture, roughness, or scattering from large structures | Results depend on the landscape and target. Radar should not be described as universally penetrating soil to reveal remains. |
| Airborne or UAV lidar | Laser measurements used to build detailed elevation models | Terrain traces and landscape-scale structure, including forms partly obscured by forest or erosion | The cited archaeology examples use aircraft- or drone-mounted lidar, not ordinary satellite photography. Elevation models show surface form, not the age or meaning of every feature. |
These methods complement one another rather than serving as universal substitutes. In some studies, radar has been explored as a broad-area way to preselect possible large or tall structures under forest canopy, alongside lidar—not as a replacement for it or for fieldwork. A Sentinel-1 study tested this approach at two Maya sites and discussed its limitations: Identification of Maya ruins covered by jungle using Sentinel-1.

What real archaeological projects have found
Nimrud, Iraq: mapping a lower city through several methods
A project reported in September 2026 used declassified satellite images to trace parts of Nimrud’s lower-city layout, including walls, gates, streets, and residential areas. The image interpretation was combined with differential GPS, drone terrain modeling, a walking survey that mapped pottery, and geophysical survey. Geophysics supported the presence of streets, neighborhoods, building complexes, walls, kilns, and pits. The work was described as an ongoing investigation, with further geophysical work and excavation planned—not as a completed excavation confirmation of every mapped feature. Archaeology Magazine’s report on the Nimrud mapping project describes the combined approach.
Tokar region, Sudan: radar and candidate settlement forms
A 2024 study used Sentinel-1 radar imagery in Sudan’s Tokar region to map potential settlement forms and buried paleochannels. The researchers discussed differences associated with soil moisture and roughness, treating the mapped forms as possible archaeological features. It is a regional case study, not evidence that radar will detect every buried settlement. The Tokar region study in npj Heritage Science explains its approach.

Maya sites in Central America: radar as a forest-mapping complement
A 2024 study examined whether comparing ascending and descending Sentinel-1 radar observations could help preselect some large or tall Maya structures beneath forest canopy. The authors presented results for two sites and discussed limitations. Their work positions radar as a possible broad-area complement to lidar and field investigation, not as a substitute for either. The Sentinel-1 study gives the method and its scope.
Uzbekistan: drone lidar and a 120-hectare urban plan
At Tugunbulak in Uzbekistan, researchers used UAV-mounted lidar and high-resolution surface modeling to document medieval highland urban remains. The 2024 Nature study reports a detailed plan spanning 120 hectares, including monumental fortifications and architecture. This is an example of drone lidar mapping landscape-scale surface structure—not a result from satellite photography. The Nature study on highland Central Asian urbanism describes the work.

Belize: why an image can miss a feature
A 2001 field report on cave sites in Belize illustrates the limits of remote sensing. In the particular Landsat 5 image examined, cloud or shadow obscured 15 of 20 known cave entrances; the thermal band was too coarse to distinguish the expected temperature signal. Radar made one sinkhole, 25 metres across and about 10 metres deep, stand out, but most cave entrances—2 to 15 metres wide—did not. Other candidate sinkholes still needed ground checks. Those results describe that project and those images, not current Landsat performance or a general rate of detection. Cameron Griffith’s Archaeology report details the case.

Look for the distinction between a feature mapped from imagery and one confirmed through other evidence. A strong account should name the sensor or method, describe what the image actually showed, and explain how researchers checked the interpretation. It should also identify the project’s geographic and technical scope: a result for one site, sensor, or landscape is not a guarantee elsewhere.

Published examples demonstrate that remote sensing can help map archaeological landscapes, from candidate settlement forms in Sudan to Nimrud’s lower-city layout and lidar-mapped urban remains in Uzbekistan. They do not establish a universal accuracy percentage or a reliable count of cities discovered by satellite imagery. The defensible conclusion is narrower: imagery can help archaeologists find and map promising patterns, while corroboration determines what those patterns mean.
