1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo find out whether a slow connection is caused by your broadband service, Wi-Fi, a device, or household activity, test more than once and compare a wired result with Wi-Fi. A slow Wi-Fi test alone does not prove there is a fault with the broadband line: the test also measures the wireless link between your router and device. Start with the steps below, then use the pattern of results to choose the right fix.
How to test your broadband speed
- Connect a computer to the router by Ethernet, if possible. Ofcom describes a direct wired test as the most accurate way to test because Wi-Fi can reduce the result. If you cannot use Ethernet, test near the router and note that the result was over Wi-Fi. Ofcom’s broadband speed guidance explains how to compare results with the speed expected under your contract.
- Reduce competing activity. Where practical, pause downloads, large uploads, cloud backups, game updates, and high-bandwidth streaming. Note any household activity you cannot pause: multiple users and devices can affect performance and perceived lag.
- Run several tests. Test at different times of day and on several days. A single result is only a snapshot; speed can vary with time and household use.
- Compare the connection in useful places. Using the same device and similar timing, test once over Ethernet, once over Wi-Fi near the router, and once over Wi-Fi in the room where you notice the problem. This comparison helps separate the wired service from local wireless coverage.
- Keep a record. Write down the date, time, device, connection method, and result for each test. Compare the pattern with the package details or speed estimate in your contract, or ask your provider what speed to expect.
Speed and latency are different. A speed test figure does not fully describe delay or “lag,” which can disrupt live services such as video calls and online games even when download speed seems adequate. Ofcom discusses both broadband and Wi-Fi problems in its consumer guidance.
Use the results to find the likely cause
Only one device is slow
If other devices work normally on the same connection, focus first on the affected device. Restart it, close apps you are not using, and check for software and security updates. If it is slow on both Wi-Fi and Ethernet while other devices are not, the issue is more likely local to that device than a whole-home service fault.
Several devices are slow on Wi-Fi, but Ethernet is better
This points toward the wireless connection rather than the broadband service reaching the router. Test close to the router, then check the router’s location, walls, distance, and nearby sources of interference before considering equipment.

Several devices are slow on Ethernet too
If repeated wired tests across devices remain below the speed you are supposed to receive, the problem may involve the service, line, or provider-supplied equipment. Check for a wider outage and contact your provider with your test record.
Try these fixes before buying equipment
Check outages and household use
Look at your provider’s service-status page or app. Ask whether anyone is downloading large files or streaming high-definition video, and temporarily disconnect devices that are not in use. Restart the router and the affected device. For full-fibre service, a separate optical network terminal (ONT) may also be part of the setup; check your provider’s or equipment manufacturer’s instructions before restarting or changing it.

Improve router placement
Put the router in an open, elevated, roughly central location, with as few walls and obstacles as practical between it and the devices. Keep it away from potential sources of interference such as microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, dimmer switches, and speakers. Ofcom offers further advice on improving Wi-Fi.
Check the Wi-Fi band and broadband socket
If your router and device support both bands, try the other available Wi-Fi band. The FCC says 2.4 GHz generally covers more area, while 5 GHz can transmit data faster; actual results depend on the home and equipment. If your router connects through a telephone socket, Ofcom advises using the main socket and avoiding extension leads where possible. Some setups may need a microfilter; ask your provider before altering line equipment.

When to contact your broadband provider
Contact the provider if the problem persists, especially when several devices show poor results over Ethernet. Openreach also advises customers with slow broadband to contact their retail provider first. Be ready to explain:
- When the problem started and whether it is constant or intermittent.
- Which devices you tested and whether each test used Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
- The dates, times, and results of your tests, including the package speed or contract estimate you compared them with.
- Whether the issue affects one device, Wi-Fi-only devices, or wired connections too.
- Which steps you have already tried, such as restarting equipment or checking for an outage.
Your provider can check the service and advise on line or equipment tests. In the UK, Ofcom says customers whose provider has signed up to the applicable codes may have a right to leave without penalty if a qualifying network problem is not fixed within 30 days. This is not a universal rule: confirm current code participation, the promised speed that applies to your contract, and your eligibility with your provider or Ofcom. See Ofcom’s broadband speed codes guidance.

When extra equipment or a different service may help
Choose a remedy only after identifying which part of the connection is limiting performance. A cable can help isolate Wi-Fi during testing; coverage equipment can address some in-home dead spots. Neither fixes a fault on the external broadband line.

- COMPREHENSIVE WIRE MAPPING: Toner and probe together perform a pin-to-pin wire map test, ensuring thorough wire mapping and identification
- Ethernet cable: Useful for a direct diagnostic test when the computer and router have compatible ports. Select a cable suitable for the speed and ports of your equipment; the available guidance does not establish a specific cable type or model.
- Mesh Wi-Fi: May help in some larger homes or rooms with weak coverage after confirming that the service to the router is adequate. Ofcom notes that two or three units may help some homes, but mesh can be expensive and too many units can make problems worse. Follow the manufacturer’s placement advice.
- Wi-Fi booster or powerline adapter: These may help in some homes, but results are not guaranteed. A booster can affect speed, and powerline performance depends on the home’s electrical wiring. Ofcom advises checking for a UKCA or CE safety mark.
- Replacement router: Ask your provider first; it may be able to supply an updated unit. A third-party router can be harder to set up and may not be supported.
- Different broadband service: Consider this only if tests and provider checks indicate that the current service is the limit and a suitable option is available at your address. Ofcom notes that full fibre may be faster and more reliable than older copper-based services, while 5G or satellite may suit some customers. Check availability at your exact address and compare expected upload and download speeds, technology, reliability, contract length, total cost, and the provider’s fault and speed commitments.
