Tall buildings can shade streets from direct sun, but they can also redirect wind and hold heat around the pavement. Whether a street feels cooler, hotter, breezier, or more sheltered depends on the buildings’ shape and spacing, the street’s orientation, local weather, and the time of day. There is no single temperature or wind change that applies to every street.
How tall buildings change wind at street level
Wind does not simply stop when it meets a tower. Buildings can push air down their faces, accelerate it around corners, channel it along streets, or shelter areas behind them. The result may be a mix of exposed gusts and poorly ventilated pockets within a small area.
Building height is only one part of the picture. Lower-level width, spacing between buildings, podiums, street width, and neighboring structures all affect how air moves. A Toronto development study examined changing urban conditions with computational fluid dynamics, a water flume, and wind-tunnel work, reflecting how interconnected the effects can be (Toronto development study).
Why some streets get gusty
Airflow can speed up as it is squeezed between or diverted around buildings. In tests of 40 super-tall building forms, 400 m models produced higher pedestrian-level speed-up ratios than 200 m models in the configurations studied. The researchers also found that a building’s projected width—particularly near street level—strongly influenced results. These wind-tunnel findings do not establish a universal height threshold for gusts (Xu, Yang, Yoshida, and Tamura, 2017).

A 2024 densification study reported worse pedestrian wind comfort for towers more than twice the height of surrounding buildings in its modeled settings. Trees lowered street-level wind in those models but did not significantly weaken corner streams. The findings describe the study’s scenarios, not a general rule for every neighborhood (2024 densification study).
Why wider buildings, tight gaps, and podiums matter
A 2012 boundary-layer wind-tunnel study found reduced natural pedestrian-level ventilation in its tested setup when an isolated building was wider. It also found adverse ventilation effects when the gap between buildings was less than half the building width and when a podium was present. Treat these as results for the tested configurations, not universal design cutoffs (2012 wind-tunnel study).

Wind comfort and ventilation are related but distinct concerns: a fast corner flow can be uncomfortable even where air movement is otherwise useful, while sheltered spaces may feel calmer but receive less ventilation. A comparison of designs should therefore consider pedestrian wind speed, gust exposure, comfort, and ventilation rather than relying on tower height alone.
How shade affects street temperatures
Tall buildings along narrow streets can create an urban canyon: the buildings shade pavement and limit its daytime heat gain from direct sunlight. That can reduce one source of daytime surface heating (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, “Reducing Urban Heat Islands: Compendium of Strategies, Cool Pavements”).

But shade does not settle whether the street will be cooler overall. Canyon walls can absorb heat reflected or emitted by pavement, then limit how readily that heat escapes. This can contribute to warmer nighttime conditions. The EPA notes that the overall effect depends on city layout, latitude, time of year, and other factors, and that more research is needed to pin down exact impacts (EPA guidance).
Why a shaded street can still feel hot
Air temperature is not the same as how hot a person feels outdoors. A 2019 modeling study used physiologically equivalent temperature (PET), an outdoor comfort measure that accounts for conditions beyond air temperature. In the modeled forms, building shade reduced the morning PET increase relative to open areas, but afternoon PET was more than 10 °C higher than the morning result. The authors associated the modeled change with buildings absorbing solar radiation and acting as heat sources, as well as warmer air in canyons and intersections. This is a result for those modeled forms, not a prediction for every shaded street (2019 building-morphology study).

That study also found that shortening building lengths and increasing low-level porosity were effective interventions in the forms it tested. Their performance should not be assumed to transfer unchanged to other street layouts or climates (2019 study).

- Wind exposure: pedestrian wind speed, gusts, comfort, safety, and ventilation.
- Building form: tower height relative to neighbors, width near street level, building length, podiums, and lower-level porosity.
- Street geometry: building spacing, street width, orientation, and nearby structures.
- Sun and season: when and how long the street is shaded, which varies with orientation and time of year.
- Weather and location: latitude, prevailing wind, cloud cover, and local climate. Wind speed and cloud cover also influence surface and air temperatures (temperature factors).
- Time of day: daytime shade may limit pavement heating, while stored or reflected heat may affect conditions later.
The studies use different methods and examine specified locations, geometries, and conditions. Wind-tunnel experiments and numerical models can reveal how particular forms behave, but the findings do not combine into a single universal score for street comfort or a general street-level temperature change (EPA guidance; 2012 wind-tunnel study; 2019 modeling study; 2017 wind-tunnel study; 2024 modeling study).
