The labels can overlap: some accelerators end with a pitch, and some competitions include a training program. Compare what is actually promised, what is merely possible, and what participation costs your company.
Accelerator vs. pitch competition: what’s the difference?

A demo day does not turn an accelerator into a guaranteed fundraising route, and a competition with workshops may provide more than a single pitch. Assess each component separately.
What current program examples show
These examples illustrate how widely the terms and formats can differ. Their published figures apply to the named programs, not to accelerators or competitions as a whole.
Google for Startups Accelerator: United States
Google describes a ten-week hybrid accelerator for high-potential U.S. technology startups, typically from Seed to Series A. Its cohorts of 10–15 startups work on technical challenges through remote and in-person sessions, sprint projects, expert pairings, and workshops. Google says the program is equity-free. The program page also identifies traction, scalability, technical depth, and participation by CTO or other technical roles among its criteria. Product-credit eligibility is conditional, so do not assume credits are included. See Google’s program details.

Techstars New York City Accelerator
Techstars describes a three-month mentorship-driven program and publishes a $220,000 investment offer: $200,000 through an uncapped MFN SAFE and $20,000 through a Post-Money Convertible Common Equity Agreement. It states that the offer includes 5% common stock plus the future value of the SAFE. Its example says a $200,000 SAFE would convert into 1% additional ownership at a $20 million next-round pre-money valuation. The NYC program page says accepted founders are expected to dedicate full exclusivity to their startup and describes a hybrid schedule. Stan Launchpad
Stan’s terms, last updated September 2026, describe a filmed program running October 4–19, 2026, with product, distribution, go-to-market, social-media, and customer-acquisition challenges. Remaining teams pitch investors on Demo Day. The terms list no application fee, deposit, participation cost, or equity taken by Stan, and describe a $100,000 taxable cash prize under the official rules. Stan states that funding is not guaranteed: investors decide independently whether to invest, in which teams, and on what terms. Participants also agree to recording and use of their image and likeness; eligibility and availability requirements apply. The signed participant agreement and official rules control. IGNITE 2026
The Ford Family Foundation’s IGNITE program combines a UK national social-venture competition with a six-week digital impact accelerator. Sixteen selected semi-finalists take part, and finalists pitch for a share of a £50,000 equity-free grant pool; the terms specify individual awards of £2,500–£20,000. Eligibility is limited to qualifying UK early-stage social ventures with a mission lock and other stated conditions. The published application deadline was August 9, 2026, so it is not an open opportunity as of October 2026. This is a hybrid model, not a standard competition template. Read the IGNITE 2026 terms.
Dirigo Labs
Dirigo Labs’ 2027 application describes a Maine-focused accelerator with phases covering financial modeling, product and go-to-market work, and capital strategy and investor outreach, followed by a public pitch competition. The page reports that its 2026 competition awarded a $25,000 prize pool, including a $20,000 Judges’ Pitch Prize plus Cohort Choice and Audience Choice awards. Its 2027 application deadline is January 8, 2027. The location focus and bundled program matter as much as the final pitch. See the Dirigo Labs application details.

How to decide what fits your company
Choose an accelerator when the work matches your needs
- Identify the company’s pressing challenges—such as product, customer acquisition, technical scaling, strategy, or fundraising—and check whether the program directly supports them.
- Ask for the curriculum, mentor-matching process, cohort schedule, participation expectations, and alumni references. A recognizable name is not a substitute for relevant help.
- Check whether the team can meet the schedule. Some programs expect substantial involvement; Techstars NYC, for example, states an exclusivity expectation for accepted founders.
- Read the exact capital documents. Confirm whether support is equity-free or involves equity, a SAFE, another convertible instrument, repayment, fees, or conditions.
Choose a competition when the opportunity justifies the effort
- Decide what you value: a prize or grant opportunity, practice delivering a pitch, or access to a particular audience.
- Check eligibility, judging criteria, award restrictions, tax treatment, and the work required to apply and prepare.
- Read publicity and intellectual-property terms. A filmed program, for example, may require permission to record participants and use their likeness.
- Budget for the possibility of not winning. A prize is a competitive outcome, not guaranteed compensation for entering.
Compare certainty with possibility
Separate features that are promised from outcomes that depend on selection, winning, or an investor’s independent decision. Mentorship, a final pitch, or an investor introduction should not be treated as a commitment to invest. Eligibility-dependent benefits and competitive awards deserve the same scrutiny.

- What support or award is guaranteed, and what is only a possibility?
- What are the full ownership, conversion, repayment, fee, grant, or prize conditions?
- How many hours, sessions, trips, or days away from operating the company are required?
- Does the program fit your company’s stage, sector, geography, and eligibility?
- What rights does the organizer receive over submitted materials, recordings, or publicity?
- Can founders who completed the program describe its actual value and demands?
There is no evidence here that accelerators or pitch competitions generally produce better company outcomes, nor a basis for comparing their success rates or average dilution. Judge the specific opportunity against your needs, calendar, and terms.
