To find out whether your UK broadband provider or contract has changed, compare your latest bill and account details with your older paperwork, then ask the provider to confirm in writing what changed and when. A different name on a bill can reflect a takeover or a trading-name change; it does not, by itself, prove that your contract or minimum term has restarted.
Check whether the provider, the contract, or the service has changed
These are different events, and each calls for a different response:
- Provider takeover: Another company takes over the provider or service. Existing contracts usually transfer in most cases, according to Ofcom’s guidance on a provider going out of business.
- Contract-term change: The same provider changes a price or another term. Check the notice against the contract you accepted; the rules depend on the type of change.
- Provider switch: Your service is moving to another provider. Establish whether you agreed to the switch. An unapproved switch is treated differently from one you requested.
How to verify what changed
- Compare the names and contact details. Check the latest bill, provider account page, bank-statement reference, and recent letters or emails against older records. A changed billing or trading name alone does not establish that your service contract changed. Ask who is now responsible for providing the service and whether the company took over from another provider.
- Review your account and original documents. Look for the package, monthly price, contract start date, minimum-term end date, contract status, notices, and order history. Compare the account view with your original contract summary and full contract information, bills, and correspondence. Ofcom says an end date may also appear in a provider app, a bill, or correspondence; see its end-of-contract notification guidance.
- Ask the provider for a written account of the change. Use a contact method you have verified independently, such as the provider’s official website or a number on a trusted bill. Ask for the date and nature of the change, who authorized it, the old and new terms, the amount charged, the minimum-term end date, any notice period, and any early termination charge. Keep the response and request a complaint reference if you dispute the change.
- Keep the evidence. Save bills, notices, emails, account screenshots, and records of calls. These help establish what you were told and when if you need to challenge a change.
If another company took over your provider
Ofcom says customers can usually continue service without interruption when a broadband or landline provider goes out of business, and in most cases the existing contract transfers to the new provider. Check the takeover notice and ask the new provider to explain any change to your price, service, contract length, or conditions in writing.
If the new provider changes your contract terms, Ofcom says you should have a right to exit without an early termination charge. Do not assume that a new company name means your minimum term has restarted: confirm the transferred contract details and any new terms with the provider.

If your provider says it changed your contract terms
Ofcom’s general guidance is that providers must give at least one month’s notice of a contract-term change and a right to exit without penalty if the change does not benefit you. Ofcom lists exceptions: changes exclusively to your benefit, such as a speed upgrade; purely administrative changes with no negative effect, such as a provider address or bank-detail change; and changes directly imposed by law, such as a VAT-rate change. Read the notice and original terms before deciding whether the rule applies.
An in-contract price rise should have been made clear when you signed. If the specific rise was not made clear at that point, Ofcom says you have a right to exit without penalty. A higher bill alone does not show whether a rise was properly disclosed, so compare it with the terms and notices you received.

If notice was missing, the terms were unclear, or you believe a term is unfair, raise the issue with customer service and make a complaint. Under Ofcom’s guidance, you can take an unresolved complaint to the provider’s alternative dispute resolution scheme after six weeks, or earlier if the provider issues a deadlock letter.
If you did not agree to the switch
Ofcom calls a switch to another provider without your knowledge or consent “slamming.” Its advice is to contact your old provider and ask it to switch your service back as soon as possible. Also contact the provider that took over the service, say that you did not agree to the switch, and ask it to investigate.

If the switch is still only being attempted, ask your current provider to cancel the order. Keep the relevant notices, bills, messages, account screenshots, and call records. If you suspect fraud or identity theft, contact each provider using independently verified details.
If you agreed to switch providers
For a UK broadband switch, Ofcom says to contact your chosen new provider to start One Touch Switch; the new provider generally manages the process. Review the information from your current provider, including any charges. Before proceeding, check whether your current contract is still in its minimum term, whether early termination charges apply, what happens to any provider email address, and whether your connection or bundle needs separate arrangements because it uses a different network.

Providers must send end-of-contract notifications 10 to 40 days before a contract ends, according to Ofcom’s guidance, originally published in 2022 and updated in 2026. The notice should include the end date, notice period, current and post-contract prices, best available deals, and the end dates of other contracts in a bundle. Use it to check whether you are still within a minimum term or have moved onto a post-contract price.

Ofcom reported in 2026 that around 3.5 million people switched landline or broadband provider over the prior two years. Its analysis suggested many out-of-contract customers could save over £100; this is population-level analysis, not a promise of savings or a personal estimate. See Ofcom’s switching-provider guidance.
