Start with ambient sound mode, equalizer (EQ), and Adaptive Sound Control: those are the controls most likely to affect everyday listening. Sony’s app is now called Sony | Sound Connect; some support pages still use the former name, Headphones Connect. Available controls and menu names vary by headphone model and device or operating system, so use the guidance below as starting points, not a list every Sony owner will see. Sony’s app overview describes the current app and its model-specific features.
Which settings should you review first?
- Ambient sound mode: choose how much surrounding sound you want to hear.
- EQ: adjust the tonal balance to your preference rather than chasing a supposedly universal curve.
- Adaptive Sound Control: decide whether the headphones should switch modes automatically or stay where you set them.
Choose Noise Canceling, Ambient Sound, or Off for the situation
In a noisy commute or other loud environment, try Noise Canceling. If you want to hear nearby conversation or announcements, try Ambient Sound and adjust its level to suit the surroundings. Some models offer Voice passthrough, which reduces surrounding noise while allowing voices or announcements through. Off is another option when you do not want either mode. These are situational choices, not a universal safety recommendation; choose based on your surroundings and what you need to hear. Sony’s guide to Noise Canceling and Ambient Sound Mode describes the available controls and model differences.
Set EQ by making small changes
Sony’s app offers preset EQ choices and, on supported models, custom or manual controls. Begin with the bands at their middle position, then make small adjustments and listen for the balance you prefer. Sony’s EQ tuning tutorial, last modified August 21, 2025, describes a five-band example with Clear Bass: raising Clear Bass can add bass emphasis, while reducing it changes that emphasis without requiring changes to the other bands. Your app may present different bands or labels.
Use a preset if you want a quick tonal change; use manual controls if you want to tune individual frequencies. Neither approach is objectively correct for everyone, and a preset name does not guarantee the same control set across models.

Decide whether Adaptive Sound Control should switch modes for you
Adaptive Sound Control can change Noise Canceling or Ambient Sound based on detected activities. With location-based features configured, it can also respond to places. This is useful if you want the headphones to adapt automatically; if you prefer consistent settings or notice unexpected changes, turn the feature off and change modes manually. Sony explains how to configure Adaptive Sound Control and ambient sound levels.
Place-based switching requires allowing Sound Connect to use location “all the time” and enabling precise location, according to Sony’s instructions. If the headphones switch modes unexpectedly, check Adaptive Sound Control first; Sony’s troubleshooting guidance explains why automatic changes or notification sounds may occur.

Turn off Speak-to-Chat if it interrupts listening
On supported models, Speak-to-Chat lowers music volume when the headphones detect that you are speaking and uses the microphones to pick up the other person’s voice. Sony describes the behavior this way: “When Speak-to-Chat is On, the headphones lower the music volume when they detect that you are speaking.” If it cuts in at inconvenient times, switch it off or adjust Voice Detect Sensitivity and Time until the mode closes, where those controls are available. The settings and feature itself are model-dependent. Sony’s Sound Connect instructions for the 1000X THE COLLEXION show an example of these controls.
Set up 360 Reality Audio only if your gear and service support it
360 Reality Audio is an optional listening feature, not a must-change setting for every owner. Setup includes ear-shape analysis and optimization for a supported music service. The effect depends on compatible headphones and the service and app configuration, so check Sony’s optimization instructions and compatibility guidance before spending time on setup.

Check model-specific audio processing limits
Optional processing controls also depend on the headphone model and listening mode. For example, Sony’s 1000X THE COLLEXION documentation describes DSEE Ultimate as AI-based enhancement for compressed audio. On that example, choosing Music, 360 Upmix for Cinema, or 360 Upmix for Game makes Equalizer, DSEE Ultimate, and Android Head Tracking unavailable. Do not assume these options can be combined on your headphones; check the app’s available controls for your model. Sony’s model-specific app guide lists those constraints.
Change other controls only to solve a real annoyance
Depending on the model, Sound Connect may also offer simultaneous connection to two devices, touch controls, button mappings, automatic pausing when headphones are removed, microphone operation, and connection settings. Change a control when it fits your routine or fixes a specific problem, rather than adjusting every available option. Sony’s app overview says there is no PC version of Sound Connect, although several features configured in the app carry over when the headphones are connected to a PC.
Find the controls your headphones actually support
Use Sony’s app overview or support page for your exact headphone model to confirm which features are available; Sony notes that both menu names and features can differ by model and device or operating system. A missing setting does not necessarily indicate a problem: it may not be supported in that configuration.
