Age alone is not enough to make the call: check the manufacturer’s support status and determine whether the problem is the router, your Wi-Fi environment, or your internet service.
How do I know if I need a new router?
Start with the router’s exact model number, usually printed on its label or shown in its administration page. Search the manufacturer’s support or end-of-life information for that model, then check whether firmware or security updates are still available.
The Australian Cyber Security Centre says router security updates are usually provided for a limited time, commonly three to five years, depending on brand and model. That is not a guaranteed lifespan or an automatic replacement deadline. The centre defines routers that no longer receive security updates as end-of-life (EOL). Check the status of your specific model rather than relying on its age.
Use this decision checklist
- Security support has ended: If the manufacturer confirms the router is EOL and no longer provides security updates, plan to replace it.
- Only outdated Wi-Fi security is available: Update the router first. If WPA2 or WPA3 is still unavailable, replace it.
- Speed is persistently inadequate: Compare wired and wireless performance across devices and investigate the internet connection before attributing the problem to the router.
- Coverage remains poor: Try practical placement changes and check for obstacles or interference. If the problem persists, assess whether an extender, mesh system, or replacement router suits the home.
When does Wi-Fi security justify replacement?
After installing any available firmware update, check the router’s wireless security settings. The FTC recommends WPA3 or WPA2; if a router offers only WPA or WEP, the FTC advises updating its software and considering replacement if WPA2 or WPA3 remains unavailable. WPA and WEP are outdated options and should not be treated as equivalent to WPA2 or WPA3.

Apple describes WPA3 Personal as the newest and most secure Wi-Fi protocol currently available. Its WPA2/WPA3 Transitional mode is intended to support compatible older devices alongside newer ones. Choose a mode that provides strong security while still working with the devices in your home; consult device and router instructions if a device cannot connect.
How can I tell whether slow Wi-Fi is the router’s fault?
A slow connection does not by itself prove the router is failing. A single device, temporary service disruption, wireless interference, or the internet connection from your provider may be responsible.

- Test more than one device in the same area. If only one device is slow, investigate that device before replacing the router.
- Where possible, connect a computer to the router by Ethernet and compare its performance with Wi-Fi. If wired and wireless connections are both slow, the router’s Wi-Fi coverage may not be the main cause.
- Check whether the issue is temporary and whether other devices or services are also affected. Contact your internet service provider (ISP) if the connection appears to be the problem.
- If wired performance is acceptable but Wi-Fi is not, examine router placement, obstacles, and interference before deciding the router needs replacement.
What should I do about poor coverage?
Place the router in a more central, open location if practical, and check whether walls, other obstacles, or interference are weakening the signal. Microsoft notes that an extender may help when moving the access point is not an option.
If coverage remains insufficient, assess the home’s layout before choosing equipment. An extender may address a limited dead spot; a mesh system is another category to consider for whole-home coverage, not a universal fix. Confirm that any option works with your existing setup and addresses the rooms where service is weak.

- Household-device compatibility: Confirm that the security modes you plan to use work with the devices in your home, including older ones.
- Coverage: Match the solution to the home’s layout and the locations that need reliable Wi-Fi; consider whether a router alone is appropriate or whether an extender or mesh setup is worth assessing.
- Wired connections: Check the number and type of Ethernet ports if you connect computers, TVs, consoles, or other devices by cable.
A practical replacement sequence
- Find the exact model number on the router label, in its manual, or in its administration page.
- Check the manufacturer’s support information for end-of-life status and available firmware or security updates; install an update if one is offered.
- After updating, check the available Wi-Fi security modes. If WPA2 or WPA3 is unavailable, replace the router.
- If performance is the concern, compare multiple devices and wired versus wireless connections, and consider whether the ISP connection is at fault.
- If coverage is the concern, try a better placement and check for obstacles or interference. Assess an extender or mesh option only if the problem remains.
- Before buying, confirm ISP compatibility and check security support, update options, device compatibility, coverage needs, and wired ports.
