For a solo Ethereum validator, withdrawing staked ETH takes three steps: the exit queue assigns an exit epoch, the validator then waits 256 epochs (about 27.3 hours) to become withdrawable, and the protocol’s automatic sweep sends eligible funds to its withdrawal address. The queue and sweep can each add time, so there is no guaranteed total wait.
What happens when a solo validator exits?
Exiting staking and receiving ETH are separate milestones. A validator can initiate a voluntary exit by signing and broadcasting an exit message with its validator keys. Ethereum also supports an execution-layer transaction that triggers an exit using withdrawal credentials; that transaction requires gas. A validator-key voluntary exit does not require gas. The Ethereum Staking Launchpad describes both routes in its withdrawal guidance.
- The exit is initiated. The protocol places the validator in the exit process and assigns an exit epoch according to available exit capacity.
- The validator remains active until its exit epoch. It must continue its normal duties and remains subject to slashing rules. Broadcasting an exit does not mean it is safe to turn off the validator. The Launchpad warns, “Do not turn your validator off until this epoch is reached.”
- The post-exit delay begins. At the exit epoch, the validator stops being active and earning rewards. It must then wait 256 epochs—about 27.3 hours—before it becomes withdrawable.
- The automatic sweep sends the funds. Once withdrawable, the validator’s full balance is eligible to be swept to its withdrawal address. You ordinarily do not submit a separate claim transaction for this full withdrawal.
The exit process is described by the Ethereum.org staking withdrawal guide and the Ethereum Staking Launchpad.
How long does it take to withdraw staked ETH?
For a solo validator, the total wait is the time to reach an exit epoch, plus the 256-epoch post-exit delay, plus the time until the sweep reaches the account. The first part varies with queued exits and the network’s exit capacity. The last depends on sweep position, the number of validators, eligible withdrawal volume, and missed slots. These are separate protocol processes, not one fixed-duration timer.

The Launchpad says a block can process up to 16 eligible withdrawals and check up to 16,384 validator accounts. It also gives illustrative sweep-duration calculations: 400,000 withdrawals in 3.5 days, 500,000 in 4.3 days, 600,000 in 5.2 days, 700,000 in 6.1 days, and 800,000 in 7 days. Those figures describe sweep capacity under the page’s assumptions; they are not a live exit-queue estimate or a promise for an individual validator.
Because queue conditions change, a wait-time number copied from an earlier snapshot may no longer apply. The Launchpad’s withdrawal page explains the mechanisms, but the figures above should not be read as a prediction of when a particular validator will receive ETH.

Do you have to claim ETH after exiting?
Usually not for a solo validator’s full withdrawal. Once the validator is withdrawable and has valid execution-layer withdrawal credentials, the protocol’s sweep transfers the eligible balance to the designated address automatically. An automatic sweep does not require you to pay gas for a claim transaction.
The key prerequisite is a valid withdrawal address. Original 0x00 credentials do not contain an execution-layer address, so they must be upgraded to 0x01 or 0x02 before funds can be delivered. Choosing an address is consequential: Ethereum.org says each validator account can be assigned a withdrawal address only once, and that it cannot be undone or changed after submission to the consensus layer. See Ethereum.org’s withdrawal guidance and its withdrawal credentials explanation.

How withdrawal credentials affect rewards and partial withdrawals
Credential type determines how a validator’s balance is handled while it remains active, including whether excess rewards are swept automatically or can continue compounding.
| Credential | What it does | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| 0x00 | Legacy credentials without an execution-layer withdrawal address. | Must be upgraded to 0x01 or 0x02 for withdrawals to be delivered. |
| 0x01 | Automatically sweeps balance above the 32 ETH effective-balance ceiling to the withdrawal address. | The credential’s withdrawal address is a one-time choice. |
| 0x02 | Allows rewards to compound in 1 ETH increments up to a maximum effective balance of 2048 ETH; automatic sweeps generally occur above that ceiling. | Certain partial withdrawals below the threshold require a manually submitted execution-layer transaction and gas. Converting from 0x01 to 0x02 is irreversible. |
Credential behavior and the one-time address assignment are covered by Ethereum.org’s withdrawal credentials guide and staking withdrawal guide. Do not confuse a manual transaction for certain partial withdrawals under 0x02 with the automatic sweep used for eligible excess balances or a completed full exit.

How pool and liquid-staking withdrawals differ
If you stake through a pool or hold a liquid-staking token, you generally do not directly initiate the underlying validator’s protocol withdrawal. The pool or provider controls the validator credentials. You redeem through its process, subject to its liquidity and redemption conditions, or sell the token on the market. That user-facing wait can differ from the solo-validator exit queue.
Ethereum.org notes that Pectra introduced execution-layer-triggered withdrawals for pools, allowing exits from a withdrawal address without relying on node operators’ signing keys. This is a protocol capability, not a guarantee that every provider offers the same redemption process or timing. See Ethereum.org’s overview of liquid and pooled staking and EIP-7002.

What to check before starting a solo exit
- Confirm the withdrawal credentials. If they are 0x00, withdrawals cannot be delivered until the credentials are upgraded.
- Verify the destination address carefully. Ethereum.org describes assignment as one-time and irreversible.
- Keep the validator running through its exit epoch. An exit message does not immediately end its duties or slashing exposure.
- Plan for three distinct waits. The exit queue, 256-epoch withdrawability delay, and sweep are separate; none provides a guaranteed overall receipt date.
- If using a pool or token, check the provider’s redemption terms. Its process and liquidity conditions govern your user-level wait, not just the Ethereum solo exit queue.
Ethereum.org’s Glamsterdam roadmap page describes proposed changes intended to increase exit capacity and reduce withdrawal times. These are roadmap proposals, not current guarantees about queue speed.
