For PC gaming, prioritize compatibility and enough usable capacity for your library; a higher advertised sequential-read speed does not automatically mean higher frame rates. A 2026 comparison across 11 games found little gameplay difference among the tested drive generations in most titles. If you are expanding PS5 storage, use Sony’s stricter compatibility checklist before comparing prices or speeds.
What matters most when choosing a gaming SSD
Choose in this order: make sure the drive fits your platform, decide how much capacity you need, then compare the total price of compatible options. Treat headline sequential-read speed as a requirement to meet—not a guarantee of better gameplay.
- Platform and slot compatibility: Check your motherboard’s supported drive form factors and interfaces, and whether you are installing an additional drive or replacing a boot drive. A benchmark of selected drives cannot establish compatibility with every PC.
- Capacity: Estimate how much space your installed games and other files require, then choose a size that suits your budget and how often you want to manage or uninstall games. There is no universal gaming capacity established by the available evidence.
- Total cost: Compare current prices among drives with the capacity and specifications you need. Price per gigabyte can help compare similar options at the time of purchase, but no current price comparison establishes a universal best value.
- Interface and performance: Meet your motherboard’s, console’s, or game’s stated requirements. Do not pay a large premium for a faster sequential-read rating unless your use case or platform calls for it.
- Physical fit and cooling: Check the drive’s dimensions and whether it includes a heatsink or other cooling structure, especially for a compact system or PS5.
Why a faster SSD may not improve PC gaming much
Sequential-read figures describe a particular kind of data transfer; they are not a direct measure of frame rate. Games can involve small or random reads, and the effect of storage speed varies by title and situation.
In an August 8, 2026 Tom’s Hardware comparison by Dan Mateescu covering 11 games, most tested titles showed little meaningful gameplay performance difference across the tested drive generations. Only two of the 11 tested titles showed measurable gameplay differences between SATA and PCIe drives.

One reported exception was an approximately 38% advantage in 1% lows for PCIe drives over SATA during a storage-intensive portal sequence in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart at 4K. That result applies to that game, scene, resolution, and comparison; it is not a claim of a general 38% frame-rate improvement. Read the Tom’s Hardware test and its methodology.
How to choose an SSD for a PC
- Identify the slot and interface. Check your motherboard specifications or manual for the available M.2 or other storage slots and supported interfaces. Confirm whether the drive is for a new build, an additional game library, or the operating-system drive.
- Check the games and system requirements. Verify any storage type or performance requirement listed for the games you play. Do not assume a benchmark proves every game will behave identically.
- Choose usable capacity based on your library. Consider the space your games and other files occupy and your willingness to uninstall titles. A 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD is a useful broad search phrase when comparing products, not a recommendation that 2TB is right for everyone.
- Compare compatible drives at the same capacity. Look at current total price and price per capacity, along with the interface and cooling arrangement. The evidence here does not establish current model prices or a universal capacity sweet spot.
- Confirm physical clearance. Check the motherboard’s slot area and any heatsink or cover before buying a drive with an attached cooling structure. If a separate heatsink is needed, verify that the assembled drive will fit.
PS5 expansion: check Sony’s requirements first
PS5 M.2 expansion is more restrictive than a general PC purchase. Sony requires a PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe drive with Key M. M.2 SATA drives are not supported. Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster, but meeting that speed alone does not guarantee identical performance to the console’s internal drive.

Check the complete drive-and-heatsink dimensions against Sony’s fit limits; a separate heatsink can also affect thickness and width. Sony cautions that games on an M.2 SSD may not all perform exactly like they do on the internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even when the M.2 drive’s sequential-read speed is faster than 5,500 MB/s. A simple way to avoid paying for speed you will not use
- Rule out drives that do not fit your motherboard or console.
- Decide capacity from your own library and budget rather than a universal “best” size.
- Meet the platform’s stated interface and speed requirements.
- Among drives that meet those needs, compare current prices and cooling fit.
- Pay more for a higher speed rating only when a documented requirement or your particular workload justifies it—not because the number alone promises higher gaming frame rates.
