It needs fictional rules that stay consistent, and coordinated feedback that lets players feel what their character is doing and understand what is happening. Weapons, movement, animation, and sound work best when they reinforce both the game’s world and the player’s control.
What “realistic” means in a sci-fi shooter
In science fiction, realism is less about reproducing the real world than making an invented one feel credible. A gravity weapon can feel convincing if its visuals, sound, handling, and effects all support the same idea. A familiar rifle can feel false if its behavior contradicts the world or gives confusing feedback.
Game audio director Eric Kraber’s phrase, reported from a Medal of Honor presentation, captures one useful distinction: “authenticity, not realism.” The report describes sound as serving feedback, emotion, and immersion, with a weapon’s sound helping indicate its power (Game Developer’s report). That is a practitioner’s framing, not a universal rule, but it points to the key test: do the details feel true to this game?
How FPS games make weapons feel real
A weapon’s identity comes from more than its firing sound. Animation, firing cadence, reload behavior, impact feedback, and—when supported—haptics should agree about what the weapon does and how it feels to use. Design is stronger when teams decide what a weapon needs to communicate before coordinating those elements.

Sound designer Michael Bross describes sci-fi weapon audio as shaped by both game design and the technical pipeline, and notes that audio is influenced by the animation it attaches to. His account of pre-production emphasizes reference gathering and technical planning before content production (Game Developer). The practical lesson is to treat sound and motion as connected parts of weapon design, not separate finishing touches.
Schofield described The Callisto Protocol’s art direction as “designed realism”: familiar objects transformed with futuristic details. He also said the team spent months refining haptic sensations, including the hum of the GRP gravity weapon and the impact of a stun baton (PlayStation Blog). These are examples of one studio’s approach, not a required recipe. They show how recognizable physical cues can support an unfamiliar tool when its visual and sensory design share a premise.
Make weapon feedback satisfying and readable
Good feedback needs to do two jobs: make an action feel consequential and help the player interpret it. Halo Infinite’s developers said cleaner weapon audio feedback could help players identify threats and respond more quickly and accurately; this describes the studio’s design intent, rather than an independently measured result (Halo Waypoint).

That balance matters because weapons are used repeatedly. A sound can be atmospheric, but if every shot obscures a nearby threat or makes weapon roles hard to distinguish, it is working against combat readability. Conversely, stripping away all character can make a weapon feel interchangeable. The strongest design gives each weapon a recognizable sensory signature without burying useful information.
Why movement makes a shooter feel immersive
In first person, the view is the player’s main evidence of a body. The movement input, weapon pose, arms, camera, and landing animation all shape whether motion feels embodied. A GDC Vault session description for Bungie animator David Helsby’s talk notes that arms, weapon, and camera motion are among the most persistent motions visible in an FPS, and that first-person animation should feel responsive and physical to support immersion (GDC Vault).
Movement cues can make a mechanic legible without changing how it works. In an interview about Titanfall, Respawn’s approach included a canted weapon during a slide and the view settling after a fall—animation signals that help motion feel physical. The article also describes an experiment with view bob and a fixed crosshair: some players felt as if the viewpoint moved independently of their control, raising motion-sickness concerns (Game Developer).

Balance physicality with comfort and control
Camera shake, bob, head movement, and other effects can suggest weight, but they should remain tied to the player’s action. If the view moves in a way that feels detached from input, the result may be discomfort rather than embodiment. Designers therefore need to weigh physical cues against view stability and player comfort; the right balance depends on the game and its audience.
Body-state systems can also connect movement to weapon handling. A Star Citizen design note links stances and breathing with weapon handling, accuracy, animation speed, damage, and stamina (Roberts Space Industries). This is one project’s design example, not evidence that every shooter needs breathing mechanics. It illustrates how a game can make physical state matter across several systems rather than treating it as a cosmetic animation.

A tactical shooter may emphasize weight, deliberate handling, and time to read a situation. A fast-traversal game may favor quick input response and fewer interruptions to the view. These priorities can conflict: more visible motion can strengthen a sense of body, while stable framing can preserve comfort and clarity. There is no single balance established by the examples here.

Some games also combine movement with tactical decision-making. Marcus Lehto described Disintegration’s hybrid combat loop as a fluid experience without awkward pauses that required players to think about the next tactical movement (Unreal Engine). That is a project-specific account, but it underscores that movement should support the game’s intended decisions, not just look impressive.

Sound can establish a place, distinguish a weapon, communicate an impact, and help players recognize threats. Those functions overlap: audio creates mood while also carrying information. Bross links weapon sound to game design and animation; the Medal of Honor report describes feedback and emotion as goals; Halo Infinite’s developers discuss clearer threat recognition. Taken together, these accounts make a strong case for treating sound as part of the game’s information design as well as its atmosphere.
World rules matter especially in science fiction. A GDC Vault listing for a Hardspace: Shipbreaker sound talk describes a rule-based approach rooted in the premise that sound does not travel through vacuum, with the team establishing rules for sound transfer (GDC Vault). The broader design principle is to decide what the player hears in each environment and make exceptions purposeful. A game can bend real physics, but arbitrary changes from scene to scene weaken its fictional logic.

Clarity may sometimes justify a deliberate departure from strict physical realism. If a threat must be audible for players to understand combat, the game can establish a consistent fictional reason for that cue. The important distinction is between a deliberate rule that serves both world and play, and a sensory detail that changes without explanation.
Audio technology also has a history of changing alongside game development. A transcript of a 2002 presentation by Martin O’Donnell about Halo discusses environmental context, weapon sounds, and early 3D-surround effects (Halo.Bungie.org). It is a historical account; its technical context should not be assumed to describe current hardware or workflows.
A practical way to assess immersion
When evaluating a sci-fi FPS, look for whether its systems support one another rather than judging any single effect in isolation:
- Physicality and responsiveness: Does motion convey weight without making control feel sluggish or disconnected?
- World consistency and readability: Do sound and physics follow understandable rules while keeping threats clear?
- Sensory richness and comfort: Do camera motion, audio density, and haptics add presence without overwhelming the player?
- Fiction and function: Does each weapon have an imaginative identity, and can the player still understand its role?
These are useful questions, not a published scoring system. The available developer accounts and examples explain design intent and craft choices; they do not establish a universal formula or quantify how much any one technique increases immersion for every player.
