For other problems, use the support controls in the specific robotaxi you are riding in and follow its instructions. Waymo and Zoox publish different procedures; those procedures are not guarantees that every driverless vehicle will respond perfectly.
What to do first in an emergency
- Call 911 for immediate danger. Use your phone to contact emergency services if you feel threatened, someone is injured, or there is a medical emergency. Do not assume remote support has already called. Waymo and Zoox both direct riders to 911 for urgent situations.
- Use the vehicle’s support control for help from the operator. The location and function differ by vehicle. Waymo offers help through its passenger screen and app; Zoox provides a touchscreen Help button and an overhead Emergency Call Button.
- Give responders your location and what happened. If you can do so safely, tell the dispatcher that you are in a driverless vehicle and describe its location, the problem, and any immediate hazards.
- Stay seated and buckled unless remaining in the vehicle is unsafe or responders direct you otherwise. A stopped vehicle may be waiting for assistance or may have stopped because its system judged that the location was safest.
How Waymo and Zoox support differ
| Situation | Waymo | Zoox |
|---|---|---|
| Urgent danger or medical emergency | Waymo says to call 911 from your phone if you feel personally threatened. Its app’s 911 button notifies Support of an urgent situation; Support may call into the vehicle. | Zoox directs riders to call 911 for a life-threatening emergency, injury, or medical problem. |
| Contacting operator support | Use the passenger screen, app, or phone to reach Support. | Use the touchscreen Help button, overhead Emergency Call Button, app, or Zoox support by phone or text. |
| Vehicle stops or pulls over | Waymo says to remain inside with your seat belt fastened and contact Support. The company may send roadside assistance. | Zoox says to stay seated and buckled. Its overhead Emergency Call Button connects to Support, which can pull the vehicle over to a safe place. |
| Police interaction | Waymo says Support is notified when law enforcement interrupts a trip, contacts the rider, and can speak with officers through the in-car speakers. | The cited Zoox support guidance describes rider support routes but does not establish a comparable police-stop procedure. |
| Passenger door release | The cited Waymo guidance does not specify a general passenger emergency door-release procedure. | A July 31, 2026 NHTSA Federal Register notice describes manual interior door-opening levers for the Zoox design covered by that notice. |
These are company-published procedures and vehicle-specific details, not an industry-wide standard. Follow the instructions in the vehicle you are actually riding in.
What happens during a police stop or first-responder encounter?
Waymo’s published process
Waymo says its system is designed to recognize police lights and sirens and pull over as appropriate. If law enforcement interrupts a trip, the company says Support is notified and will contact the rider by in-car speakers or phone. Support can also speak with officers through the vehicle’s speakers to help resolve the interaction. These are Waymo’s stated procedures; they should not be assumed to describe Zoox or another operator.
Waymo publishes emergency-response guides and law-enforcement interaction protocols for its vehicle models, and says it offers first-responder training in the places where it operates. Its first-responder page reports more than 35,000 first responders trained at more than 150 agencies, but does not state the reporting year for those company figures.

Why first-responder interaction matters
In a July 8, 2026 call to action, NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison warned: “An Automated Vehicle That Cannot Safely Interact With First Responders is a Danger to the General Public.” NHTSA said it had documented cases of automated vehicles entering active emergency scenes, blocking ambulances or firefighters, or failing to respond to warning cues such as flashing lights, flares, smoke, fire, and traffic cones. The release describes the agency’s concern; it does not provide a denominator or comparative incident rate.
If the robotaxi stops unexpectedly
Waymo
Waymo says its vehicle may pull over or stop in the road if that is the safest option available to it. Its rider instruction is to remain inside with the seat belt fastened and contact Support. The company says it may send roadside assistance. In a security event, the vehicle may remain stationary until police arrive.

Zoox
Zoox tells riders to stay seated and buckled. If you need non-emergency help, use its touchscreen Help button or overhead Emergency Call Button; the latter connects to Support, which can pull the vehicle over to a safe place. Call 911 directly for a life-threatening emergency, injury, or medical problem.
Do not try to force a door or step into traffic simply because the vehicle is stopped. If you believe staying inside creates an immediate danger, call 911 and follow dispatcher or responder instructions. Use the specific vehicle’s release method only when an exit is necessary and safe.

Can you get out of a robotaxi in an emergency?
There is no single egress procedure for all robotaxis. A July 31, 2026 Federal Register notice concerning a Zoox vehicle exemption describes an interior lever on either side that passengers pull to release and push the door open. It also describes an exterior door button for first responders and fallback instructions for accessing an emergency door handle if a severe crash disables that button. These details apply to the Zoox design addressed in the notice, not to every model or fleet. Learn the controls in your vehicle before you need them, and follow any prompts or instructions from responders.
The same NHTSA notice discusses child passengers in that Zoox vehicle context. It records that children under eight were not permitted at the time and notes concerns that seat belts may not fit every child aged eight or older. The notice says Zoox’s rider manual makes parents or guardians responsible for proper restraint, including using a booster seat if needed. Because age eligibility and restraint rules can change and depend on the operator and vehicle, check the current rules before traveling with a child.

What company procedures do—and do not—establish
Waymo says its autonomous vehicles cannot avoid or prevent every collision, and that some collisions could cause injury or death. Its California Passenger Safety Plan update, dated January 2024, describes Rider Support checking for injuries or medical assistance after a detected collision, contacting riders through speakers or phone, dispatching roadside assistance, and contacting emergency services. It also says agents are trained to contact 911 when an apparent medical event is reported or observed. Those are Waymo’s stated procedures, not a reason to wait for support instead of calling 911 when urgent help is needed.
Published workflows explain what an operator says it will do; they do not establish a guaranteed response time or prove that every emergency will be handled successfully. The cited NHTSA release raises first-responder interaction concerns but does not provide a comparative incident rate. The available information therefore does not support a numerical safety ranking across robotaxi operators.
