Sit down and raise your arms while wearing it as usual. Those movements can reveal whether the top is pulling at the waist, needs a length adjustment, or is catching on your hips. Avoid tightening the waist by default: a peplum that is too tight at its join can draw up and wrinkle.
Find where the top starts to ride up
Put the top on the way you normally wear it, then move through the positions that usually trigger the problem. Watch the bodice and waist seam as well as the peplum hem; the part that moves may not be the part that needs an adjustment.
- Bodice pulls: Notice whether raising your arms makes the bodice tug upward.
- Waist seam shifts: Check whether the join between the bodice and peplum moves or forms wrinkles.
- Back rises: See whether the back lifts more than the front, especially when sitting or moving.
- Peplum catches: Check whether the flared hem catches against your hips when you sit or stand.
Ride-up during arm-raising or sitting can point to tightness or an incorrect torso length, but these checks are clues rather than a definitive diagnosis. Match the adjustment to the pull
If the waist join pulls or wrinkles
Inspect the fit and ease at the seam joining the bodice and peplum. A historical sewing manual advises making peplum fit adjustments at the joining seams and warns that a peplum made too tight can draw up and wrinkle. That guidance is useful for locating the issue, but it is not a universal modern fit standard. Do not take in the waist as a default fix; tightening can make the problem worse. If the back is the main area riding up
Check whether the back seems too short or is pulled upward relative to the front. A slight center-back length adjustment is one possible remedy described in a contemporary sewing tutorial, not a guaranteed fix. If it happens mainly during movement
Repeat the sit-and-reach checks and note exactly which seam moves first. If the bodice pulls before the peplum shifts, investigate bodice or torso fit; if the waist join stays put but the hem catches on your hips, the issue may be related to how the peplum falls over them. These observations can narrow down what to discuss with an alterations professional, but they do not establish a single cause on their own.

Make a home alteration cautiously
Only alter the seam that matches the pull you observed. If you sew, baste the proposed change first, put the top on, and repeat the movements that caused the ride-up before stitching permanently. A tutorial that uses a stable knit with good recovery gives that advice for construction; it does not guarantee that fabric choice or seam work will fix a ready-to-wear top. You do not need a sewing machine for every alteration: hand sewing or a professional alterations service may be more suitable, depending on the fabric and construction.
If you are unsure which seam to change, or the top still shifts after a basted adjustment, ask a tailor or alterations professional to assess it. The available fitting guidance does not establish a universal amount of length or ease to add or remove.
