It can be safe to keep using an old Wi-Fi router if its exact model still receives security updates and supports WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal. Age alone is not a reliable cutoff. If the manufacturer or your internet provider no longer supports the router, or it cannot use modern Wi-Fi security after a software update, plan to replace it.
What makes an old router unsafe?
The key issue is not how long you have owned the router, but whether its exact model still receives security patches and can be configured with modern Wi-Fi encryption. A router that still connects devices may nevertheless be unsupported. There is no universal number of years after which every router becomes unsafe.
The FBI explains that end-of-life devices are no longer actively supported and no longer receive manufacturer software updates or security patches. CISA guidance likewise treats the loss of supported security updates as a reason to replace a device. The FBI has reported that cyber actors used variants of TheMoon malware against end-of-life routers in proxy services. That is a specific reported threat, not evidence that every old router is compromised.
How to check whether your router is still supported
- Identify the exact model. Check the label on the router or its management interface. A product family name may cover several models with different support statuses.
- Check the manufacturer’s support information. Look for an end-of-life or end-of-support notice and the latest firmware for your exact model. If the router came from your internet provider, ask whether it still receives updates and whether the provider offers supported replacement equipment. Some ISP-supplied equipment may receive automatic updates.
- Check the Wi-Fi security options. In the router’s wireless settings, look for WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. If only WPA or WEP is available, install any available software update and check again. If the newer options remain unavailable, the FTC advises considering a new router.
- Secure the settings you can control. Change default administrative and Wi-Fi passwords. Turn off remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not need them.
Appearance, purchase date, Wi-Fi generation, and the fact that the router still works do not establish whether it is supported. The exact model and, for provider-supplied equipment, the provider’s support policy matter.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When should you replace it?
- It has reached end of support. If it no longer receives security patches, plan to replace it, especially if it is connected directly to the internet. Changing settings cannot restore missing vendor support.
- It cannot use WPA2 or WPA3. If those options are still missing after a software update, choose a supported replacement or contact your provider about compatible equipment.
- Your ISP manages the gateway. Ask the provider which replacement works with your service and whether the device is provider-owned or part of a modem-and-router arrangement.
In a May 7, 2025 public service announcement, the FBI said routers dated 2010 or earlier likely no longer receive manufacturer software updates. Treat that as a warning in that alert, not as a universal lifespan rule; support status for the individual model is the better test.
If you keep a supported router, secure it
- Install current firmware from the manufacturer or your ISP.
- Use WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal for Wi-Fi security.
- Replace default administrative and Wi-Fi passwords with strong, unique passwords.
- Disable remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not need them.
These steps reduce avoidable exposure on a supported router, but they do not make an unsupported router receive security patches again.
