Use URL Inspection to check or request a crawl for a few specific URLs. Use an XML sitemap to help Google discover many URLs across a site. Google describes sitemap submission as a hint, and says a recrawl request can take days or weeks and does not guarantee search inclusion.
Which method should you use?
| Your need | Use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Check whether Google knows about one page, or test its live accessibility | URL Inspection | Shows information about the URL’s current index status and offers a crawl request for eligible users. A request does not guarantee inclusion. Google’s recrawl guidance |
| Ask Google to revisit a small number of recently changed pages | URL Inspection | Requests are limited, and submitting the same URL repeatedly does not make Google crawl it faster. Google’s recrawl guidance |
| Tell Google about many pages, such as on a new or changed site | XML sitemap | Provides a list of URLs for discovery. Google may choose whether and when to crawl them. Google’s sitemap guidance |
| Check whether Google accessed a sitemap and whether it encountered processing errors | Sitemap report in Search Console | Reports sitemap access and processing information; successful processing does not mean every listed page will be crawled or indexed. Google’s sitemap guidance |
There is no published Google head-to-head timing result showing that one method is categorically faster. The practical difference is scope: URL Inspection is for individual URLs, while a sitemap is for communicating a set of URLs.
When URL Inspection is the better fit
In Google Search Console, open the property that contains the page, enter its URL in the URL Inspection bar, and review the reported status. You can also run a live test to check what Google can access now. If appropriate, choose the option to request indexing (a crawl request); the exact option available depends on the URL’s reported state.
You must be an owner or full user of the Search Console property to submit an indexing request. Google limits how many URLs can be submitted, so the feature is intended for a few pages rather than bulk submission. Google’s instructions for requesting a recrawl

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A request is not a command to index the page. Google says crawling can take a few days to a few weeks, and requesting a crawl does not ensure that the page will appear in Search. Repeating requests for the same URL will not make it happen sooner. Google’s recrawl guidance
When an XML sitemap is the better fit
A sitemap is a file listing URLs you want considered for Google Search. It is useful for supplying Google with a site-wide set of URLs, including when launching or updating a site. You can submit it in Search Console or use Google’s supported sitemap discovery methods. Google’s documentation emphasizes that submission is a hint: Google is not obliged to download the file or crawl every URL in it. Build and submit a sitemap

Make the sitemap valid and selective
- Use UTF-8 encoding and fully qualified, absolute URLs.
- Include URLs you want considered for Google Search, rather than every URL your site can generate.
- Keep each sitemap file at or below 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs. These are Google Search Central’s documented technical limits; the documentation retrieved for this article does not state a publication year for them.
- If the list exceeds a file’s limit, split it across multiple sitemap files and optionally use a sitemap index.
Where a sitemap is hosted can affect which descendant URLs it covers unless you submit it through Search Console. Consult Google’s sitemap documentation for the applicable scope rules.
Use Search Console to monitor processing
After submission, check the sitemap report in Search Console for whether Google accessed the file and for reported processing errors. A report showing successful processing confirms that Google could process the sitemap; it does not confirm that each URL was crawled or added to the index. Google’s crawling troubleshooting guidance notes that most sites should not expect same-day crawling. Troubleshoot crawling errors

Discovery, crawling, and indexing are different outcomes
A sitemap or a link can help Google discover a URL. After discovery, Google’s systems decide whether and when to crawl it; not every discovered page is crawled. Crawling is not indexing, and indexing does not guarantee that a page will appear for a particular search. How Google Search works · Google’s crawling and indexing FAQ
That distinction explains why neither submission method is an indexing shortcut. A sitemap does not guarantee indexing or improve ranking, and a URL Inspection request does not override Google’s decisions about crawling and inclusion.

What to check if Google has not found or indexed a page
- Inspect the specific URL. In Search Console, use URL Inspection to see Google’s reported status and test the live URL. This helps distinguish a discovery delay from an accessibility or indexing issue.
- Check that the URL is the one you want indexed. Confirm that the page is available at its intended canonical URL and that your sitemap lists that URL rather than an alternate version.
- Check crawl accessibility. Look for accidental blocking or other access problems that would prevent Googlebot from reaching the page. Use the live test and Search Console’s reported errors to guide fixes.
- Use the right submission method for the scale. Request a crawl for a few important, changed URLs; submit or update a sitemap for a larger set of pages.
- Allow time, then check again. Google gives a general range of a few days to a few weeks for crawling after a request, not a service-level deadline. Avoid repeatedly requesting the same URL in the hope of speeding it up. Google’s recrawl guidance
Do not use the Indexing API as a general workaround
Google’s Indexing API is intended for eligible job posting and livestream video pages, not as a general-purpose way to submit ordinary site pages. For broader site coverage, Google recommends sitemaps. Indexing API quickstart
