Scan that region for a faint, hazy patch—not a bright, sharply edged galaxy. Dark, clear skies make the search easier, and binoculars can help if you cannot see it unaided.
Find Cassiopeia and use its W as a pointer
- Look for Cassiopeia, a conspicuous M- or W-shaped group of stars in the northern sky.
- Identify the W’s more deeply notched half. EarthSky describes this deeper V as an arrow pointing toward Andromeda. Schedar, one of Cassiopeia’s stars, is another directional cue.
- Look from that direction for a faint, hazy patch. The W is an orientation aid, not a precise line to M31; its apparent position varies with your location and the time.
In northern autumn, Cassiopeia is above the northeastern horizon around nightfall and early evening, climbs higher as the evening goes on, and is high above the northwestern horizon before dawn. Your exact view depends on date and location. Check Stellarium Online or another location-aware sky chart for when and where to look.
Use Pegasus if the W is hard to read
EarthSky offers an alternate route from Alpheratz, the star at the Great Square of Pegasus. Follow the line of stars in Andromeda to Mirach and Mu Andromedae, then extend an imaginary line through Mirach and Mu toward M31. A current sky chart can help you distinguish these stars and account for their position in your sky.
Choose the right viewing method
| Method | What to expect | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Naked eye | A faint, fuzzy or hazy patch. | Best attempted under dark, clear skies; visibility varies with local conditions. |
| Binoculars | A brighter, more concentrated core and some of the wispy disc. | They are relatively easy for beginners to point. Locate the region first, then bring them up or sweep slowly across it. |
| Telescope | More detail may be visible. | The field of view often cannot frame the whole galaxy at once. |
None of these views resembles a richly processed observatory image. NASA’s Night Sky Network guide says binoculars show M31’s bright core and “a bit of its wispy, saucer-shaped disc.”

Improve your chances under the sky
- Favor darkness. Moonlight and city lights can overwhelm M31’s faint glow. NASA notes that persistent observers may still find its core from some moderately light-polluted areas when skies are otherwise clear, but local visibility cannot be guaranteed.
- Wait for clear conditions. Thin clouds, smoke and haze make faint objects harder to see.
- Give your eyes time to adapt. Avoid bright screens and lights while searching.
- Scan patiently. Once you have the region, sweep slowly with binoculars if the galaxy does not stand out unaided.
Why M31 can be hard to see despite its size
NASA’s Hubble Messier catalog lists M31 at apparent magnitude 3.1 and says its apparent angular size is about six times the full Moon’s apparent diameter. That size comparison does not mean it looks bright or sharply defined: its light is spread across a broad area, so its low surface brightness can make it difficult to pick out against a bright or hazy sky.
M31 is about 2.5 million light-years away, according to NASA’s 2024 observing guide and Hubble Messier catalog. The distance is a useful reminder of what you are seeing, but the practical search is simple: use Cassiopeia to orient yourself, check a chart for your location and time, and look for a subtle glow under dark skies.
