Check the SSD’s current negotiated PCIe link speed and width in a PCIe-aware hardware utility or firmware diagnostics. For a typical four-lane M.2 NVMe drive, a full Gen5 link reads 32.0 GT/s, x4. A drive’s Gen5 capability, a motherboard’s headline specs, or a fast benchmark alone cannot confirm its current link.
What to look for: link speed and link width
PCIe speed and width are separate readings. The NVM Express Management Interface Specification Revision 2.0 (2024) defines a PCIe Current Link Speed field for the negotiated speed and a separate PCIe Negotiated Link Width field. Its speed field “shall indicate the port’s PCIe negotiated link speed.” The specification distinguishes negotiated values from supported speeds and maximum width, so a capability page that says “Gen5 supported” does not prove the SSD is currently connected at Gen5. NVM Express Management Interface Specification.
| Current reading | What it means |
|---|---|
| 32.0 GT/s, x4 | Gen5 signaling with four lanes: a full Gen5 x4 link, typical for a four-lane M.2 NVMe drive. |
| 32.0 GT/s, x2 | Gen5 signaling, but only two lanes are negotiated. |
| 16.0 GT/s, x4 | Four lanes at Gen4 signaling, not Gen5. |
For a usual M.2 2280 consumer NVMe setup, Gen5 x4 is the expected full link. If either the speed or width is lower, the SSD is not currently using a full Gen5 x4 connection.
How to check the SSD’s current link in Windows or Linux
Windows
- Open a PCIe-aware hardware information utility or the motherboard’s firmware diagnostics.
- Select the NVMe controller or SSD, not a graphics card, chipset, or another PCIe device.
- Find the current or negotiated link speed and link width. Check for 32.0 GT/s and x4.
- Compare those current values with the drive’s maximum capability and the specification for the exact M.2 socket in the motherboard manual.
Linux
- Use a PCIe/NVMe diagnostic that reports the SSD endpoint’s current link status.
- Verify that the selected endpoint belongs to the SSD; a system has separate PCIe links for devices such as graphics, network, and chipset components.
- Read the current speed and width using the same interpretation: 32.0 GT/s is Gen5 signaling, and x4 is four lanes.
Utility labels, firmware screens, and reporting coverage vary by hardware, driver, and software version. There is no single command or screen guaranteed to expose the SSD’s negotiated link on every Windows or Linux system.

Firmware and motherboard documentation
If the firmware interface shows current M.2 link information, use it as a second reading. Then check the motherboard manual for the exact socket number and its generation, lane width, and lane-sharing notes. A board may provide Gen5 on one CPU-connected M.2 socket while other sockets run at Gen4 or share lanes. ASUS describes platform-level cases where populating M.2 sockets affects another slot’s width, and advises checking slot specification, lane sharing, BIOS generation settings, and seating when a link runs below expectation. Those details depend on the board; use the manual for your specific model. ASUS PCIe troubleshooting guidance.
Why a Gen5 SSD may show a lower link
- The SSD is not a Gen5 model. Confirm the exact model’s interface specification; a product name or appearance is not enough.
- The populated M.2 socket is limited to Gen4 or fewer lanes. A motherboard’s GPU slot specification does not establish the capability of each M.2 socket.
- Another device uses shared lanes. Follow the board’s lane-sharing table to see whether a populated socket or expansion device changes available connectivity.
- Firmware sets a lower generation. Check the relevant PCIe link-speed setting in BIOS/UEFI. ASUS notes that settings may be set below Auto or the highest supported generation; menu labels vary by vendor and board.
- The drive is not seated correctly or the connection is impaired. If you are comfortable doing so, shut down and follow the system manufacturer’s installation instructions to check seating and the socket. ASUS includes seating and slot condition in its PCIe troubleshooting guidance.
- BIOS, storage driver, or SSD firmware needs attention. Check the motherboard and SSD makers’ support pages for relevant updates. SanDisk lists outdated or incompatible host BIOS, NVMe drivers, and firmware among possible causes of low performance or non-detection. SanDisk WD_BLACK SN8100 support.
After any change, read the negotiated link status again. If a firmware screen or utility reports only maximum capability rather than current negotiated status, it cannot confirm the active link.

Use benchmarks as a separate performance check
A sequential benchmark measures performance under a particular workload; it does not directly report PCIe link generation. Results also depend on the SSD model and capacity, host configuration, workload, thermal conditions, and test method. Use a benchmark after checking link speed and width, as context for performance—not as proof of Gen5 connectivity.
For example, SanDisk states that its WD_BLACK SN8100’s maximum listed speeds require a host motherboard with a Gen5 NVMe M.2 slot. The manufacturer lists up to 14,900 MB/s sequential read for its 1–4 TB models and up to 14,000 MB/s sequential write for its 2–4 TB models. These are manufacturer product claims, not a guarantee for every system or benchmark run. The exact result depends on the specific drive and host.

Compatibility and cooling considerations
A Gen5 NVMe SSD can operate in a Gen4 slot, but it will use the link capability available from that slot rather than a Gen5 link. Before buying an upgrade, verify both the SSD’s interface and the exact M.2 socket specification in the motherboard manual. Cooling requirements also depend on the particular drive and installation: SanDisk notes that some early Gen5 drives required active or passive cooling because of heat, but a separate heatsink is not universally necessary. Check the drive and motherboard guidance for your setup.
Do not enable write caching as a way to make a PCIe link negotiate Gen5; it does not establish link generation. SanDisk warns that interrupting power while cached writes are pending can cause data loss.
