Use Aero Shake—called Title bar window shake in Microsoft’s current Windows 11 settings—when you want to clear other windows from view and focus on one. Use Snap when you want to position multiple apps on screen together. They solve different problems, and you can use either one whenever your task changes.
How Aero Shake and Snap differ

In short, Aero Shake temporarily gets other windows out of the way; Snap arranges windows so you can work across them. Snap layout choices can vary with display size, so the available layouts may differ from one screen to another.
When to use each feature
Choose Aero Shake for one-window focus
If you are concentrating on a document, browser tab, or other active app and want to hide the rest of your open windows, shake the active window’s title bar. Windows minimizes the other open windows without closing them. This is a quick clearing action, not a way to arrange apps side by side.
Choose Snap for simultaneous visibility
If you need to refer to one app while working in another—such as comparing two documents or keeping a reference open beside your work—Snap positions and resizes windows to make room for both. Use Snap layouts when you want a predefined arrangement, and Snap Assist to choose apps for its remaining spaces.

Choose a keyboard shortcut if you prefer not to drag or shake
Windows key + Home minimizes or restores all windows except the active one, providing a keyboard alternative for the focus outcome. For arranging windows, Windows key + Left Arrow or Windows key + Right Arrow snaps the active window, while Windows key + Z opens Snap layouts.
How to turn on Title bar window shake
- Open Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Turn on Title bar window shake.
- To clear other windows, shake the active window by its title bar. To bring minimized windows back, use the Windows key + Home shortcut or restore them individually.
Microsoft lists the setting as a way to quickly minimize open windows except the one you are working on. If the label differs on your device, follow the setting names currently shown in Windows.

How to use Snap in Windows 11
- Snap a window by dragging it to a screen edge or corner, or press Windows key + Left Arrow or Windows key + Right Arrow.
- For a predefined arrangement, press Windows key + Z and select one of the layouts shown. You can also drag a window toward the top of the screen to reveal the Snap bar.
- When Snap Assist offers other open windows, select one to fill an available space.
- To return to a snapped arrangement, use the taskbar, Task View, or Alt+Tab if the relevant Snap group settings are enabled.
Snap controls are also under Settings > System > Multitasking. There you can adjust the main Snap windows control and options for suggestions after snapping, the maximize-button Snap flyout, the top-of-screen Snap bar, and restoring snapped windows through taskbar hover, Task View, or Alt+Tab.
