Reviews can help you make a more informed decision, but they are not a substitute for your own preferences. If you know what you want from a game and day-one access matters to you, waiting may offer little benefit. If technical performance or the game’s core appeal is uncertain, the extra information may be worth more than playing immediately.
What happens when you preorder from Nintendo in the U.S.?
Nintendo eShop digital preorders
Nintendo allows preorders for selected unreleased Switch 2 and Switch games; not every game is eligible. For an eligible eShop preorder, Nintendo processes payment seven days before release and preloads the game at that time if your console has enough storage. A small update is required at release to unlock play. See Nintendo’s instructions for preordering a game on Nintendo eShop.
You can cancel an eShop preorder before payment is processed, up to the seven-day-before-release cutoff. If your payment method fails when Nintendo attempts to charge it, the preorder is canceled. If a game is releasing within seven days or is already released, the store may show “Proceed to Purchase” instead of a preorder option.

Physical pre-purchases from Nintendo Store
Nintendo of America says physical pre-purchases through Nintendo Store are charged immediately and ship 1–3 business days after release. To cancel, Nintendo says to contact support. Will reviews be out before a specific Switch 2 game releases?
There is no universal answer: review access and embargo timing vary by publisher and title. Check for coverage of the specific game and note when it is published relative to release. Forbes reported on June 3, 2025, that review-copy access can vary among publishers, including cases where access arrives only after a game goes live. What the 2025 Switch 2 launch does—and doesn’t—tell you
For the Switch 2 hardware launch on June 5, 2025, Nintendo did not provide review units before launch. In a June 3, 2025 report, Video Games Chronicle said this meant there would be no pre-release reviews of the launch software or analysis of the console’s performance and features. The article relayed Nintendo’s explanation that “important features and updates” would be available through a launch-day system update. Read the Video Games Chronicle report from June 3, 2025.
That was a particular decision about the 2025 console and launch software. It does not establish when reviews will appear for any other Switch 2 game, or indicate a current blanket policy. Use the game’s own review schedule to decide whether waiting is likely to provide useful information.

How to make the call before release
- Decide what you still need to know. If you’re waiting to learn about performance, content, or whether the game suits you, reviews may help. If your decision is already made, early access may matter more.
- Look for a review schedule for that game. Don’t infer its timing from the Switch 2 hardware launch or another publisher’s practices.
- Check the actual preorder listing. Confirm that the game is preorderable, whether a bonus is included, and when the bonus becomes available. Nintendo says an eShop bonus download code is available only after payment is processed, no sooner than seven days before release.
- Check the format and seller terms. For a Nintendo eShop preorder, note the seven-day payment and cancellation cutoff. For a physical purchase, read the specific retailer’s charge, shipping, and cancellation terms.
- Account for preload requirements. An eShop preload needs sufficient storage, and the game still requires a release-time update before it can be played.
