Buying an individual stock means accepting both the possibility of a price decline and the possibility that the company itself will struggle or fail. You can lose some or all of the money you invest; in a liquidation, common shareholders are paid after creditors and preferred shareholders and may receive nothing. A stock can also fall without the company being close to failure. The main risks to assess are company-specific problems, market swings, concentration, timing, and unreliable information or promotion.
What can go wrong when you own an individual stock?
A share is an ownership interest in a company, not a guaranteed claim to a particular return. Its market price can rise or fall, and selling for less than you paid turns a decline into a realized loss. Even if you do not sell, a lower price can affect the value of your portfolio and your ability to use the money when you need it.
Price risk and business failure are related but distinct. A company can remain in business while investors mark down its shares because expectations, market conditions, or the perceived value of its future prospects have changed. Conversely, a company’s serious financial trouble can threaten the value of its shares. Investor.gov explains both stock-price losses and the position of common shareholders in liquidation in its Stocks – FAQs.
Which risks should you evaluate?
Company and issuer risk
A company’s products, operations, finances, management, or competitive position may deteriorate. A faulty product or a business that loses customers can damage its prospects and share price. Public filings can help you understand the issuer and its stated risks, but disclosures are information—not a promise of success.

Market risk
Broad economic, political, or market events can move a stock even when nothing new has gone wrong at the company. Investor.gov’s What is Risk? distinguishes volatility and factors that can affect an investment, including company-specific and external events. Buying a well-known or financially established company does not remove market risk.
Volatility and timing risk
Prices fluctuate, sometimes sharply. A short time horizon can make a decline especially consequential: if you need the money soon, you may have little opportunity to wait through a downturn, and recovery is never assured. The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing describes stocks as very risky in the short term because of volatility.

Concentration risk
Putting a large share of your investments into one company makes your results unusually dependent on that issuer. The risk can be greater when the company is also your employer: your income and investments may both be affected by the same business trouble. The SEC’s Ten Things You Should Know About Investing cautions against excessive exposure to an individual stock, including employer stock.
Failure and liquidation risk
If a company is liquidated, common shareholders are behind creditors and preferred shareholders in the payment order. There may be no proceeds left for common stockholders. Owning shares therefore does not mean you are entitled to get your purchase price back if the business fails.

Information and promotion risk
A company with limited public information can be harder to evaluate. Viral posts, sudden price surges, and promises of high returns with little or no risk deserve scrutiny rather than automatic trust. The SEC’s Hot Stock and Social Media Alert warns that short-term investing in volatile stocks promoted through social media carries significant risk of loss.
How does one stock compare with a diversified fund?
A diversified fund can spread company-specific exposure across multiple holdings, but it is not automatically safe or right for every investor. Funds can still fall with their holdings or with the broader market. Check what a fund owns, how broadly it is diversified, and what it costs rather than assuming the word “fund” means low risk.

| Consideration | Individual stock | Diversified fund |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer exposure | Primarily one company | Many holdings, or a broader mix depending on the fund |
| Company-specific risk | Concentrated in that issuer | Spread across holdings, but not eliminated |
| Market and timing risk | Can fall, including when money is needed soon | Can also fall; a short time horizon remains consequential |
| Research and control | Requires assessing the issuer; investor chooses the company | Requires checking holdings, diversification, and fees; exposure depends on fund design |
Diversification is a way to reduce some portfolio risk, not a way to guarantee gains or prevent losses. The SEC-led World Investor Week 2026 Investor Bulletin, issued October 5, 2026, puts the point carefully: “In a well-diversified investment portfolio, if one particular investment suffers a loss, other investments might help balance out the loss.”

- Match the investment to your time horizon. Ask whether you can leave the money invested through a substantial decline, and whether the timing fits the goal. A near-term cash need makes a downturn harder to absorb; the right allocation depends on your circumstances and risk tolerance.
- Measure the concentration. Consider what portion of your portfolio would depend on this company, including any employer stock, and whether your other holdings are meaningfully diversified. A basket of stocks or a diversified fund can spread company-specific exposure, but neither removes investment risk.
- Read the company’s public information. Use the SEC’s EDGAR company filings search to review available filings and understand the business, finances, and disclosed material risks. Reporting gives you information to assess; it does not predict or guarantee future performance.
- Evaluate the source of the investment idea. Treat social-media claims, hype, sudden price moves, and claims of high returns with little or no risk as reasons to investigate carefully, not as evidence that the stock is suitable.
- Check any professional you use. Look up a professional’s registration, background, and disciplinary history through the SEC’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) and FINRA’s BrokerCheck. Understand fees and potential conflicts before relying on advice.
How are stock ownership, trading, short selling, and leverage different?
Buying and holding a share exposes you to losses up to the amount invested in that position. Short selling and leveraged products add risks beyond ordinary ownership. A short seller can face theoretically unlimited losses if the stock keeps rising. Leveraged and inverse single-stock ETFs add leverage or daily-reset exposure; they are not equivalent to simply owning the stock. If your intent is straightforward ownership, make sure the product you are considering actually provides that exposure.
