AI can make it quicker to draft software test cases and automation scripts. That does not prove software testing is cheaper overall, or that the resulting tests are useful. The harder work is deciding what should be tested, whether a test reflects the real requirement, and whether a passing result gives anyone confidence that the software will work for users.
Can AI test software?
Yes. Teams use AI to help create test cases and automation scripts, look for coverage gaps, analyze test outcomes, and—in some setups—execute or adapt tests. These uses can reduce the effort of producing test artifacts, especially routine ones. They do not remove the need to define expected behavior or judge whether a test checks it.
Applause, a digital quality services provider, found that more than 92% of respondents to its August 2026 survey used AI in testing, up from 59.6% in its 2025 benchmark survey. In the 2026 survey’s question about specific uses (n=186), 65.1% selected creating test cases, 62.4% creating automation scripts, 48.4% identifying coverage gaps, 43.5% analyzing outcomes, and 36.6% autonomous execution or adaptation. These are survey responses, not a census of software organizations. Applause’s 2026 functional testing report
Adoption is not the same as maturity. Capgemini and Sogeti’s World Quality Report 2025–26 says 43% of organizations are experimenting with generative AI in QA, while 15% have scaled it enterprise-wide. The report’s public landing page does not provide all underlying question detail, so these figures should be read as headline survey findings rather than universal adoption rates.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Does AI make software testing cheaper?
It may lower the time spent drafting some tests, but the available evidence does not establish a universal reduction in the total cost of testing. Generating more tests can also create review, debugging, execution, and maintenance work. A test suite that is quick to produce but irrelevant, brittle, or misleading can cost more than it saves.
There are also implementation costs. In the Capgemini/Sogeti report, 60% of organizations cited difficulty with secure, scalable test data, and 58% cited challenges adopting AI-powered tools. Those constraints affect whether a team can use AI in a reliable workflow, not just how quickly a prompt produces code.

Software Improvement Group (SIG) says its State of Software 2026 benchmark—covering more than 30,000 systems and over 400 billion lines of code—found roughly twice as many security risk violations in AI-generated code as in human-written code in its testing. SIG also framed average AI token spend for a 50-developer team as equivalent to nearly one additional developer. These are SIG benchmark findings and cost framing, not evidence that every team will see those results or that testing itself costs more. They do underline why teams should count review, security, and operating costs alongside time saved generating tests. SIG’s State of Software 2026 release
Why test volume and speed do not prove quality
A generated test is valuable only if it exercises a meaningful risk and checks the intended behavior. A large suite can still miss an important user path, encode the wrong business rule, or pass because its assertion is too weak. AI may also produce tests that are unstable or require frequent repair.

Self-healing automation deserves particular scrutiny. Applause CTO Tacita Morway warns that an AI-powered system may change a failing test so it passes without checking the intended behavior. The useful question is not merely whether a tool restores a green build; it is whether the repaired test still expresses the original requirement.
Adoption figures also do not demonstrate improved outcomes. Applause reports that 29% of respondents said functional defects had increased in number or severity. That is a survey response, not proof that AI caused the increase. In a separate February–March 2026 survey, 54.5% of respondents said their organizations had released AI features, while 44.1% said they had deactivated live AI features in the prior year because operating costs outweighed user value. Those findings do not isolate testing as a cause; they illustrate why producing tests or shipping features faster is not, by itself, a measure of value. Applause’s 2026 AI report

What still needs human judgment?
In Applause’s 2026 functional-testing survey, 86.1% of respondents rated human involvement extremely important and 13.4% rated it somewhat important. The report identifies areas where context matters: user behavior, complex business logic, domain knowledge, user experience, exploratory edge cases, and assumptions that were never written down.
People need to connect the software’s intended behavior to the tests that claim to verify it. That includes deciding which failures matter most, interpreting ambiguous requirements, and evaluating subjective outcomes such as whether an interaction is understandable. As Applause EVP Chris Sheehan put it, “There’s a steep learning curve to get tools to accurately understand nuance and correctly interpret user intent, especially when there are multiple layers of context and requirements.”

This does not mean every test must be written by hand. It means a person with enough product and domain context must be able to validate what the test says, what it omits, and what a pass or failure means.
How to tell whether AI-generated tests are any good
Evaluate the tests by the confidence they provide, not by the number generated. Before relying on an AI-assisted test suite, ask:
- Risk and intent coverage: Does it cover important user behavior, business rules, and failure modes—or mostly easy, predictable paths?
- Relevance and reliability: Does each test check intended behavior, stay stable, and fail for meaningful reasons?
- Maintenance cost: How often do tests need repair? When a tool heals a test, does it preserve the original assertion rather than weaken or replace it?
- Human review: Is someone responsible for validating requirements, domain assumptions, edge cases, and user experience?
- Release evidence: Can the team explain which risks were tested and why a passing suite provides confidence?
- Operational constraints: Can the workflow safely access its test data, integrate with the team’s tools, and justify model and automation costs?
At release, track risk coverage, escaped defects, test stability, maintenance effort, and review quality alongside the time or cost of producing tests. “Tests created per hour” measures output; it does not show whether the software behaves as users need it to.
Will AI replace software testers?
The evidence here supports a shift in the work, not a conclusion that testers are no longer needed. AI can assist with repetitive test drafting and automation tasks, but it does not establish that generated tests reflect the right requirements, cover the right risks, or deliver a trustworthy release. Testers and quality engineers remain important for framing those risks, challenging assumptions, exploring unexpected behavior, and interpreting results. The more cheaply a team can generate tests, the more valuable it becomes to judge which ones deserve trust.
