Choose a PIR sensor if your ESP32 display only needs to wake when someone moves. Choose an HLK-LD2410 mmWave presence module if the display should stay active while someone sits still. The radar’s advantage comes with a specified power supply, UART or status-pin integration, and detection-zone tuning; it is not a drop-in equivalent to every PIR board.

What is the practical difference between PIR and mmWave?

A passive infrared (PIR) sensor responds to changes in infrared energy associated with a warm object against its background. Texas Instruments’ sensor-technology comparison describes mmWave radar as measuring phase and frequency shifts in reflected millimeter waves; time-of-flight measurements are also used. In practical display projects, PIR commonly serves as a motion trigger, while the HLK-LD2410 is documented to report both moving and static human targets. Radar capabilities vary by model, so that behavior should not be assumed of every mmWave module.

Will it detect someone sitting still?

PIR: wake on movement

A PIR module is a good fit when the display can sleep after the user stops moving, or when the desired behavior is simply to wake the screen as someone approaches. TI’s broad technology comparison lists PIR range as 10–12 m and characterizes PIR as the lowest-cost and lowest-power option in its comparison table. Those entries are technology-level comparisons, not guarantees for a particular retail module or room installation.

HLK-LD2410: presence during stillness

The HLK-LD2410 manual says the module can sense static and slight human movement. That makes it the better match when someone sitting at a desk should continue to count as present even without obvious motion. The display firmware still needs to decide what to do with the sensor’s presence state—for example, when to dim or sleep after the room becomes unoccupied.

Compare power, wiring, and firmware effort

Consideration PIR motion sensor HLK-LD2410 mmWave module
Best fit Movement should wake or trigger the display. Presence should persist while a person is still.
Power TI’s technology comparison labels PIR the lowest-power option; actual module consumption is not stated there. The HLK-LD2410 manual specifies a 5–12 V input. Plan for the chosen module’s supply rather than assuming the ESP32’s 3.3 V rail is suitable.
Controller interface A simple digital trigger is common, but verify the specific PIR board’s pin behavior in its own documentation. The manual documents a target-status output pin and serial data over UART at a default 256000 baud.
Firmware Often suited to a simple trigger-based response; confirm the chosen board’s output logic and timing. Use the status output for a basic detected/not-detected signal, or parse UART data for target state and distance-related auxiliary information.
Setup Check the selected module’s documented coverage and mounting guidance. Configure the farthest detection distance and sensitivity by distance gate for the intended area.

How to connect an HLK-LD2410 to an ESP32

The HLK-LD2410 manual specifies VCC, ground, UART TX and RX, and an optional OUT target-status pin. It gives the module a 5–12 V power input, 3.3 V IO, and default serial settings of 256000 baud, one stop bit, and no parity. In a conventional UART connection, cross the data lines: sensor TX to ESP32 RX, and sensor RX to ESP32 TX. The manual specifies a high target-status level when a person is detected.

  1. Check the exact module and board. Confirm the LD2410 variant’s pinout and supply needs, and identify the ESP32 board’s available UART pins and suitable power source.
  2. Provide sensor power and a common ground. Supply the sensor within its specified 5–12 V input range; do not treat the 3.3 V IO specification as a 3.3 V power-input specification.
  3. Choose the interface. Connect OUT to a suitable ESP32 input for a simple target-status signal, or connect crossed TX/RX lines for serial data. Follow the board and module documentation for safe wiring.
  4. Set the UART configuration if using serial. Start with 256000 baud, one stop bit, and no parity, then configure the firmware to match.
  5. Test the detection area before setting display behavior. Confirm that the sensor reports presence where intended and that the display responds appropriately to both movement and stillness.

A public ESP32-C3 and LD2410C example powers the radar from 5 V and uses 3.3 V UART directly to the controller, with TX and RX crossed. Its README describes ESPHome 2024.2 or newer for the built-in component used in that example and also provides an Arduino sketch path. Treat it as one configuration example, not a wiring or software guarantee for every ESP32 board, sensor variant, or later release.

How to choose and tune the detection zone

The room and mounting position matter as much as the sensor category. The LD2410 manual supports setting a farthest detection distance and sensitivity by distance gate, so tune those settings around the portion of the room where the display should respond. TI’s comparison notes that radar can detect motion beyond an intended area, including through walls; activity outside the target zone can therefore affect behavior. Check the chosen module’s documented coverage and adjustment options before relying on a stated range.

Physical fit and module variants

The base HLK-LD2410 is listed with a 1.27 mm pin pitch, which may call for an adapter or careful soldering during prototyping. Product suffixes can change features and connector format, so verify the exact variant’s pin spacing, connector, and power requirements before choosing parts. A specific retail PIR board is not established here; select one whose own documentation confirms its output behavior and electrical requirements.

Which sensor should you use?

  • Choose PIR when movement is enough to wake the display, low-power simplicity is the priority, and continued detection during stillness is unnecessary.
  • Choose the HLK-LD2410 when the display must treat a seated, nearly motionless person as present and you can accommodate its power, interface, and tuning requirements.
  • Before building, verify the exact module variant, ESP32 supply and UART availability, mounting location, and the area in which detection should occur.
