A 100Hz display refreshes its image 100 times per second. For spreadsheets and browsing, 60Hz is usually enough for reading and other still content; 100Hz can make scrolling and pointer movement look smoother. It does not make calculations run faster or web pages load sooner.
What 100Hz means
Refresh rate is how many times per second a display redraws its image, measured in hertz (Hz). A 100Hz display refreshes 100 times each second; a 60Hz display refreshes 60 times each second. That is the display’s refresh capability, not a guarantee that every application is supplying 100 different images per second. What changes during spreadsheets and browsing
Still content
When spreadsheet cells or a web page are stationary, a higher refresh rate does not add detail, change the data, or increase screen resolution. Ordinary office work—such as reading, email, and document editing—is generally fine at 60Hz, according to Samsung Business Insights and Samsung’s monitor refresh-rate guide.
Scrolling and pointer movement
The practical difference is most apparent when something moves. Scrolling through a long worksheet, document, or web page and moving the pointer can look more fluid at 100Hz than at 60Hz. That is a change in how motion is displayed, not faster spreadsheet calculations or quicker page loading. How much you notice depends on your use and the computer’s ability to supply frames the display can show.

What must support 100Hz
The monitor must offer a 100Hz mode at the resolution you want, and the computer and its display output must support that mode. A monitor rated for 100Hz cannot create useful new application frames that the computer does not provide. Check the monitor’s supported modes and the computer’s output specifications; the connection and selected resolution can affect the available choices. Microsoft notes that some refresh rates may not be available at the current resolution, and selecting an incompatible combination can change the resolution.
How to check the selected refresh rate in Windows
- Open Settings and go to System > Display > Advanced display.
- Select the display you want to check, if more than one is connected.
- Review the current refresh rate. If you want to change it, choose an available rate from the refresh-rate menu.
- Confirm that the displayed resolution remains the one you intend to use. If 100Hz is not listed, check the monitor’s supported modes, the connection, and the computer’s display-output capabilities.
The exact options shown depend on the display and connected hardware.

Is 100Hz worth choosing for office work?
For primarily static work, 60Hz is usually adequate. Consider 100Hz if smoother scrolling and pointer movement matter to you and your computer can drive the display at your preferred resolution. Compare refresh rate alongside screen size, resolution, panel, ergonomics, and ports rather than treating Hz as the only measure of a monitor. There is no established productivity gain to quantify for spreadsheets or browsing.
As one example of the category, MSI lists the PRO MP252L with a 24.5-inch IPS screen, 1920 × 1080 resolution, 100Hz refresh rate, and 1ms MPRT response time. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results or a claim about availability or value.

Does 100Hz reduce eye strain?
Microsoft and Samsung discuss possible comfort benefits of higher refresh rates, but their general guidance does not establish that 100Hz will reduce eye strain for a particular person. Treat comfort as an individual experience, not a guaranteed health outcome.
