For the lowest-pressure, pick-it-up-when-you-want experience, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the safer choice. For a casual player who likes varied activities and visible progress, Stardew Valley may be the better fit. Neither is universally easier: “casual” can mean relaxed pacing, or it can mean having plenty to do without committing to one kind of task.

What “easy to play casually” means

There is no objective ease ranking for these games. The useful distinction is whether you want a game that asks little of your schedule or one that offers many small goals whenever you sit down. Official descriptions point to Animal Crossing for self-directed, low-pressure play and Stardew Valley for a broader mix of progression and activities.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is better for low-pressure sessions

Nintendo describes the game as letting players “Live life at your own pace” while gardening, fishing, decorating, collecting bugs and fossils, and getting to know animal residents. Its core appeal is shaping an island through activities you choose, rather than pursuing a tightly defined sequence of objectives. Nintendo’s gameplay overview

There is one important pacing trade-off: the game follows real-world time. Nintendo says the time of day and seasons match real life, and available creatures vary by time and season. That can make brief daily visits feel natural, but some discoveries depend on when you play rather than how quickly you progress.

Stardew Valley is better for variety and progression

ConcernedApe describes Stardew Valley as an open-ended country-life RPG. Farming is only one part of it: the game also includes fishing, crafting, relationships, community restoration, exploration, and skill growth. Its five skill areas are farming, mining, combat, fishing, and foraging. Stardew Valley’s official feature page

That range gives casual players different ways to spend a session, but the cozy presentation does not mean every activity is gentle or mechanically simple. Cave exploration includes dangerous monsters, and farm development and skill progression add goals to manage. You can choose your priorities, but players seeking a consistently unhurried routine may find Animal Crossing’s pacing a closer match.

These recommendations follow the games’ official descriptions and features, not a controlled comparative difficulty test. ConcernedApe reported more than 41 million Stardew Valley copies sold across all platforms as of December 2024, including more than 26 million on PC and 7.9 million on Nintendo Switch; that dated figure does not establish which game is easier or provide a same-date comparison with Animal Crossing.
