Once Nintendo has charged you, its U.S. policy treats digital payments as final and non-refundable unless Nintendo authorizes an exception or applicable law requires one. A release delay is not documented as an automatic refund trigger. The rules can differ by Nintendo Account region, so check the game listing and terms for your region before acting.
When Nintendo charges for an eShop preorder
For North American accounts, Nintendo processes the full preorder payment no sooner than seven days before the game’s listed release date. After payment is processed, the game is preloaded to the console, but it cannot be played until release; a small update may also be required to unlock it. How to cancel before payment
Nintendo’s North American support says a preorder can be canceled before payment is processed and the game is preloaded. Its guidance identifies the eligible window as seven days or longer before the release date.
- On the console, open Nintendo eShop using the Nintendo Account that placed the preorder.
- Open that account’s preorder list and select the title you want to cancel.
- Cancel while the order remains eligible—before payment processing and preloading. If the cancellation option is no longer available, contact Nintendo Support for your account’s region.
Nintendo says a canceled preorder can be placed again before launch or purchased after launch. If Nintendo canceled the order because of a payment failure or an account issue, check the payment method and account status before trying again. What a delayed release means for a paid preorder
Nintendo’s North American preorder and refund pages do not state that a delayed game automatically cancels a paid preorder or generates a refund. Check the title’s Nintendo eShop listing and Nintendo’s official regional news or support pages for a revised date. If your account is in North America and the order still looks inconsistent after checking the listing, contact Nintendo Support for your region; do not assume a procedure described for another country applies to your order.
If the game is not playable on its planned release date
Nintendo Japan’s support guidance says the release date may have changed. It directs customers to check Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s official site for the latest date, then refresh preorder information on the console using Software Update → Via the Internet. This is Japan-specific guidance; the cited North American FAQ does not confirm that same procedure for every North American case. See Nintendo Japan’s preorder support page.

Can you get a refund after Nintendo charges you?
Nintendo’s U.S. Digital products refund policy states: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.” That is the stated baseline, with exceptions where Nintendo authorizes one or applicable law requires one. The policy does not promise a refund just because a game’s release date changes.
For an individual order, contact Nintendo Support and ask about that purchase. Consumer rights depend on the rules that apply where you live; this article does not determine whether a particular legal exception applies. Read Nintendo’s U.S. Digital products refund policy.

Why your Nintendo Account region matters
Nintendo’s rules and available cancellation options are not identical everywhere. For example, Nintendo Spain describes a 14-day withdrawal right for preorder contracts subject to conditions for digital content, as well as a separate voluntary right to cancel before the non-playable version downloads. Those Spain-facing terms should not be applied to a U.S. account. Review the terms and support information for the country or region associated with your Nintendo Account.
