AI image edits can change pixels outside the area you selected because a mask is usually a guide for where to regenerate, not a guarantee that every other pixel will remain identical. The model uses the image, mask and prompt to create a coherent result; blending the new content into its surroundings can affect nearby areas. For exact preservation, use a workflow that composites the edit over the original so only pixels inside the mask are replaced.
How AI image editing works
Many text-guided editors use a technique called inpainting. The system receives three inputs: the original image as visual context, a mask that indicates the region to regenerate, and a prompt describing the desired result. It then synthesizes content that fits both the instruction and the surrounding image. Hugging Face Diffusers documents this image-mask-prompt workflow in its inpainting guide.
Some models are specifically trained or fine-tuned for inpainting. Google describes Imagen Editor as a cascaded diffusion model fine-tuned for text-guided inpainting, with object detectors used to propose masks during training and the original high-resolution image used as context. Other editors may use prompt-based editing, user-painted or automatic masks, or additional structural controls. Their behavior is not interchangeable: the model and pipeline determine how much authority the prompt and mask have.
Why areas outside the edit can change
The mask guides generation; it may not enforce a hard boundary
A mask marks the intended edit region, but the model still has to make the new content fit the image. Some inpainting-specific checkpoints may change unmasked areas to create more natural transitions, as the Diffusers guide notes. That can be useful around soft edges, but it is a problem when exact pixel preservation matters.

The prompt can reshape the model’s idea of the whole image
A prompt is not a pixel-level boundary. Diffusion models try to produce an image that fits the text, and changing the instruction can lead to a different overall result. The 2025 AAAI paper on D-Edit describes prompt edits producing different images and spatial masks being ignored as challenges for image editing. Those are research concerns, not a claim that every product behaves the same way.
The mask may omit parts of the change
If you replace an object but leave its shadow, reflection, hair edge or other connected detail outside the mask, the model has to reconcile the requested change with visual evidence you asked it to preserve. Google Research says a prompt can be ignored when the mask is too small or covers only part of an object; object-mask training is one approach to better align prompts with masked regions. Include the full area that should change, but keep nearby details you want preserved outside the mask.

Blending can broaden the visible change
Softening a mask edge can make the transition look less abrupt, but blending is a trade-off: it may alter pixels beyond the intended region. The Diffusers guide documents both this behavior and an alternative—compositing the generated result over the original image so the unmasked area stays unchanged, at the possible cost of a less natural seam.
How to keep an AI edit local
- Choose an inpainting or local-edit mode. A user-painted or automatic mask gives the edit a spatial boundary that a whole-image prompt alone does not provide.
- Mask the complete intended change. Include object edges and any shadow or reflection that should change. Leave adjacent content you need to keep intact outside the mask.
- Keep the prompt focused. Describe what should appear in the masked region and add useful local context, such as material, lighting or viewpoint. Avoid rewriting the whole scene unless the editor expects a full-scene description; prompt conventions vary by tool.
- Use crop padding for a small edit if available. Diffusers’
padding_mask_cropworkflow crops around the masked area with padding, processes the crop at higher resolution, and overlays the result on the original. This can help with local detail while retaining context in the surrounding image. - Set mask-edge blur for the boundary you need. More blur softens the transition; low or zero blur keeps the edge sharper. Prefer a sharper edge when the edit must stop at a crisp boundary, and softer blending when a natural transition matters more than exact locality.
- Composite over the original when preservation is strict. If the tool or editing workflow supports it, replace only the masked pixels with the generated result and retain the original everywhere else. Check the edge afterward, since a hard composite may look less natural.
- Inspect at full resolution. Compare the original and edit around the mask edge, faces, text, repeated objects and fine details. If a protected feature changed, restore it from the original or refine the mask and try again.
What AI editors tend to handle differently
There is no universal winner across editing tasks. When choosing or evaluating a workflow, consider how it controls the edit region, whether it preserves unmasked pixels, how it handles boundaries, whether it can process a padded crop, and how reliably it follows prompts for the specific task. Object, material, color, size, shape and count edits are not equally easy for every model.

Google Research reported that its human evaluation found stronger performance on material, color and size attributes than on count and shape attributes. Its EditBench dataset contained 240 images—120 generated and 120 natural—according to the project’s 2023 research blog. That dataset describes a benchmark, not the accuracy of every commercial editor.
The Imagen Editor team summarizes the challenge this way: “A key challenge is to generate edits that are faithful to the input text prompt, while consistent with the input image.” The statement captures the tension behind many unintended changes: the edit must satisfy the instruction and still make sense in context. See the Imagen Editor and EditBench project page.
