Long-running agents work best when the active context is a deliberately managed working set—not an ever-growing transcript. Keep stable instructions predictable, add only information relevant to the next decision, reduce old conversation deliberately, and store durable knowledge or trusted evidence outside the prompt when appropriate. No single strategy is best for every workflow: each trades state fidelity against token use, latency, retrieval quality, cache reuse, and operational control.

Why context grows—and why more is not always better

An agent’s context is more than the visible conversation. It can include system and developer instructions, tool definitions, prior user and assistant turns, tool results, retrieved documents, and the output being generated. Each item competes for the model’s available working space, and repeated tool calls or workflow stages can make the input grow even when the user’s latest request is short.

Unbounded history is not a reliable substitute for useful state. Older details can become irrelevant, retrieved passages can distract from the task, and large prompts can raise inference cost and latency. AWS’s Agentic AI Lens puts the tension plainly: “Overstuffing context windows increases inference latency and cost, and insufficient context leads to poor reasoning and hallucination.” The engineering goal is therefore not to maximize context, but to preserve the information the next step needs.

Budget the main contributors separately: instructions, tool schemas, recent conversation, retrieved material, and expected output. A budget should be a control, not a quota to fill. Keep enough room for the next response and tool cycle, and use relevance filtering and dynamic tool selection where available. Too little context can remove a constraint or decision the agent needs; too much can dilute the signal.

Choose the right way to reduce or carry state

These approaches solve different problems. Trimming limits transcript growth; summarization and compaction represent prior work more compactly; external memory stores information beyond the active prompt; prompt caching can reduce repeated processing of an unchanged prefix. They can be combined, but none should be mistaken for a universal or lossless solution.

Approach What it does Main benefit Main risk or cost
Trim or truncate Remove older turns while retaining a more recent portion of the conversation. Simple, predictable way to bound history; recent turns can remain verbatim. A critical constraint, decision, or exact value may be removed because it is old.
Summarize Rewrite earlier messages into a shorter account of relevant state. Retains a compact narrative of prior work. Details can be omitted or altered; summary generation takes work and must be validated.
Compact Reduce accumulated context through a provider’s compaction mechanism, sometimes producing a compact state item. Can let a run continue with fewer context tokens and may be initiated at a threshold or workflow boundary. The result may be opaque or lossy; behavior and controls vary by provider and implementation.
External memory and retrieval Keep information outside the active prompt and retrieve a bounded selection when needed. Decouples total stored knowledge from prompt size and supports reuse across invocations. Retrieval adds latency and can return irrelevant, stale, or incomplete material.
Prompt caching Reuse processing for an unchanged prefix when the provider and request qualify. Can reduce repeated processing for matching content. It is not persistent memory; changing earlier prompt content can prevent reuse from that point onward.

Trim, summarize, or compact conversation history

Trim when recent turns are the priority

Trimming is a reasonable first control when the recent exchange contains most of what the next action needs. Retaining a window of recent turns is straightforward and preserves their original wording. Its weakness is recency bias: a requirement stated early, an exact identifier, or a decision made several steps ago can disappear along with the text around it.

Before removing turns, extract facts that must survive into explicit state or an external record. A session-memory pattern described in OpenAI Agents SDK cookbook material combines recent turns with a summary of earlier context; it is an implementation pattern, not a guarantee that every detail is retained.

Summarize when a readable account of prior work helps

A summary can preserve goals, constraints, decisions, evidence, and unfinished actions in less space than the original exchange. Make it structured enough to be checked: distinguish confirmed facts from assumptions, retain exact values where they matter, and identify open questions and the next action. If provenance matters, record where a fact came from rather than converting it into an unsupported assertion.

Summaries can lose nuance or exact details, so test them against representative tasks. Do not make a summary the sole record of consequential evidence or decisions that people need to rely on.

Use compaction for bounded continuation, with explicit checks

Compaction is a context-reduction mechanism intended to carry a run forward in a smaller form. OpenAI’s Responses API documentation describes server-side compaction through context_management and compact_threshold; a response stream can include an opaque compaction item, and compaction can also be requested separately. Exact request behavior, storage implications, and supported models are provider- and version-dependent, so consult the current API documentation before implementation.

OpenAI Agents SDK examples also describe compaction at workflow phase boundaries. Anthropic’s platform guidance describes server-side compaction as its primary strategy for long-running agentic workflows. These are provider-specific approaches, not evidence that compaction preserves every detail for every task. Define what state must survive—such as constraints, decisions, evidence references, and unfinished actions—and test that state after compaction. Use a reviewable checkpoint at phase boundaries when a human needs to inspect it.

Put durable knowledge outside the active prompt

Use external memory when information should outlive the current context window or be available in later invocations. Keep the retrieved material bounded and relevant; inserting an entire corpus into every request defeats the purpose. Separate stores or tiers can help when session state and cross-session knowledge have different access patterns.

AWS’s Agentic AI Lens recommends patterns including semantic chunking, hybrid search, reranking, top-k caps, and passage thresholds. These are architecture options, not a requirement to use a particular vendor stack. Microsoft Agent Framework context providers offer before and after hooks to inject context and optionally save extracted state. In either approach, retrieval results need relevance and freshness controls: a once-useful passage can be wrong for the current task or out of date.

Keep three responsibilities distinct:

  • Active context contains information needed for the current decision or tool call.
  • Reusable memory carries useful state or knowledge into future runs, with retrieval used to select what belongs in a prompt.
  • Reviewed artifacts preserve evidence and decisions that people rely on, in a form that can be inspected independently of a compressed transcript.

Memory is stored or retrieved state; prompt caching is reuse of a matching input prefix. Caching does not make information persist as memory, and memory retrieval does not guarantee cache reuse.

Preserve stable prefixes when cache reuse matters

OpenAI describes prompt caching as reuse of an unchanged rendered prefix. A design can place stable developer instructions and shared reference material before dynamic conversation content, where the request format and model support it. Cache reuse depends on matching content and provider-specific conditions; it should be measured rather than assumed simply because requests belong to the same session.

Changing earlier history through trimming, summarization, or compaction changes the prefix from that point forward and can prevent reuse of the changed portion. Compaction may reduce prompt size while reducing cache reuse. Treat that as a real tradeoff: compare the context savings with cache behavior for the actual workflow, rather than preserving unnecessary history solely in hope of a cache hit.

Evaluate strategies against the workflow, not a universal winner

Official provider and architecture guidance describes options and tradeoffs, but does not establish a controlled head-to-head benchmark that ranks these techniques across agent tasks. Compare candidate designs using the dimensions that matter to your workflow:

  • State fidelity: Does the next step retain constraints, decisions, exact values, evidence provenance, and unfinished actions?
  • Token and cost footprint: How much context is sent, and what are the current model-specific input, output, and cache rates?
  • Latency: What time does summarization or compaction add, and how much does retrieval add on each iteration?
  • Retrieval quality and freshness: Are relevant passages selected, bounded, reranked where appropriate, and refreshed often enough?
  • Cache reuse: Does the design preserve matching prefixes, and how often do changing history or tools cause misses?
  • Operational control: Can the team set thresholds or phase boundaries, inspect usable state, and recover after an interruption?
  • Data handling and portability: Where is state stored, how long does it persist, and can the workflow move between providers?

Run evaluations on representative long workflows, including cases where a critical fact appears early, retrieved knowledge becomes stale, and the agent is interrupted between phases. Check whether required state survives the reduction step and whether the resulting agent can still complete the task correctly. Measure the actual costs and latency under the target provider’s current configuration; do not infer them from a different model, tool set, or workload.

Monitor the context lifecycle in production

Instrument context management as part of the agent’s reasoning loop. AWS identifies observability concerns such as latency and hit rate as recurring across agent iterations. A useful operational view includes:

  • Token use by component: instructions, tools, history, retrieved material, and generated output.
  • Retrieval latency and relevance signals, including whether selected passages support the next action.
  • Cache behavior, including reuse and misses as prompt content changes.
  • Compaction or summary events, thresholds, and whether required state remains available afterward.
  • End-to-end task outcomes and recovery behavior after interruption, not just prompt size.

Review these measures together. A smaller prompt is not a success if it drops essential state; a high retrieval hit rate is not useful if the retrieved passages are irrelevant. Update budgets, retrieval policies, and phase boundaries based on observed failures and workload needs.

Provider-specific details need version checks

Provider APIs and platform features change. OpenAI’s Responses API and Agents SDK, Anthropic Claude platform guidance, AWS Agentic AI Lens, and Microsoft Agent Framework illustrate different implementation surfaces, not interchangeable guarantees. Verify current field names, model support, context limits, persistence behavior, and pricing in the relevant provider documentation before deployment.

For scale only, an OpenAI Agents SDK cookbook dated September 9, 2025 reported GPT-5 capacity of up to 272k input tokens and 128k output tokens. Those are dated, provider-published, model-specific capacity figures—not a general limit for agents, a comparative performance result, or a current capacity claim for every model.
