To install a Game Pass game, open the Xbox experience on your console or Windows PC, sign in with the account that has access to the game, find its current listing, and choose the install option shown there. The exact steps depend on your device and the current Xbox interface; use Xbox’s installation guide for current instructions.
Before you install: confirm the game and account
Game access depends on the account signed in, its current subscription entitlement, and whether the game is currently available for your device. Catalog availability and subscription terms can change, so check the game’s listing rather than assuming it is included. Xbox explains how to manage subscriptions.
Install on an Xbox console or Windows PC
- Open the Xbox experience for your device. On a console, use its Xbox interface; on a Windows PC, use the Xbox app or the current Xbox experience for PC.
- Sign in to the account with access to the game. If you use more than one account, make sure the active account is the one with the relevant entitlement.
- Find the game and open its listing. Check that the listing is available for your device and account.
- Choose the install control shown on the listing. The interface and button labels may vary, so follow the current on-screen prompts.
- Check the installation status. Look in the queue or the relevant installation status area to see whether the download is waiting, in progress, or complete. Xbox provides guidance for viewing installation status.
Choose where the game installs
Where available, review the selected installation location before starting the download. Make sure the chosen location has enough free space for that game. Requirements and compatible storage options vary by device and game; Xbox’s customize game installations guide covers installation-location options. Check the specific device and game requirements before relying on an external drive.
Local installation or cloud play?

Xbox treats cloud play as distinct from installing a console game. See its current guidance on cloud gaming versus installing, then check the individual game and device listing. Cloud play can avoid a local download, but its suitability depends on eligibility and your network conditions.

If a Game Pass game will not install
Work through these checks in order. They help identify whether the issue is access, availability, queue status, or the installation location.
- Verify access. Confirm you are signed in to the account with the relevant subscription entitlement, and check that the game remains available to that account.
- Check device availability. Make sure the game’s listing supports the console or PC you are using. A listing for another device does not establish that this version can be installed on yours.
- Inspect the queue or installation status. Check whether the download is pending, active, or complete using the relevant status interface.
- Review the installation location. Confirm the selected drive or console storage has enough space and is an appropriate location for that device and game.
- Use the PC-specific support path if you are on Windows. For PC installation failures, follow Xbox Support’s PC game installation troubleshooting. For console issues, consult the current Xbox installation guidance for your device.
The available support information does not establish a universal error-code explanation or a single fix for every failed installation. Follow the device-specific guidance for the message you see rather than applying a remedy meant for a different error.
