Sometimes—but Steam has no universal setting that transfers demo progress. Each game’s developer decides whether its demo save can be used by the full game. Check that game’s official instructions first; if transfer is supported, follow its in-game import or load steps and keep the demo save until you confirm your progress appears.
Why demo progress does not always carry over
A Steam demo and its full game are separate Steam apps. The developer must make their save systems compatible and, where applicable, configure Steam Cloud to share the relevant files. Valve’s Steamworks documentation on demos describes shared Cloud storage between app IDs as a way to let players continue a demo save in the full game. That is a developer-side setup, not a player setting that can make any demo and full game compatible.
As a result, some games automatically find an existing demo save, some offer an import prompt, and others do not support transferring progress. Buying the full game alone does not guarantee that a demo save will be usable.
How to check whether your game supports a transfer
- Check the game’s official guidance. Search its Steam store page, Community announcements, developer website, or support page for terms such as “demo save,” “import,” or “continue progress.” Steam Support advises checking the game’s Steam Community forum or developer website for save-location details, or contacting the developer: Steam Support: finding game save files.
- Install and launch the full game. If the developer confirms transfer support, follow its stated import prompt or save-loading instructions. Some games can load the demo save directly without a separate copy step.
- Check Steam Cloud only if the game’s instructions call for it. Cloud sharing between the demo and full game must be configured by the developer. Turning Cloud on cannot create compatibility where the game has not provided it.
Follow the game’s transfer method
Automatic detection or an in-game import
Use the full game’s own flow when the developer documents one. For example, Dinkum’s official FAQ says players can continue by loading their demo save in the full game after installing it: Dinkum FAQ. This is an example for that title, not a general Steam procedure.

Steam Cloud
Steamworks supports developer-configured shared Cloud storage between app IDs, a common approach for connecting demo and full-game saves. Its Auto-Cloud system syncs configured file groups when an app launches and exits; whether files are shared across platforms also depends on how the developer configures save locations and platform overrides. If the save is missing on another device, check the game’s instructions and Cloud configuration rather than assuming that every Steam Cloud save transfers automatically.
Manual save copying
Copy files manually only when the developer gives instructions for your game. Save locations, file names, formats, and platform folders vary, and copying the wrong file can fail or interfere with an existing full-game save. First locate the developer’s documented save path, back up the original, and follow its exact steps. Steam Support likewise points players to the game’s forum or developer for save-location details.

Protect the demo save until you verify the result
Do not uninstall the demo or delete its files while checking transfer options. At least some games keep saves only on the local PC when Steam Cloud is disabled; Dinkum’s official announcement warns that uninstalling can delete such a save. Check the game’s specific guidance before removing anything: Dinkum announcement about demo saves.

Transfer rules can include limits on existing saves, platforms, or which progress carries over. Square Enix’s support instructions for its documented title say demo data can be transferred only if no full-game save already exists, and progress beyond the demo’s caps does not carry over. Its Steam Deck procedure requires Cloud Save Data to be enabled for both the demo and full game: Square Enix support: transferring demo save data. Those are title-specific conditions, not universal Steam Deck requirements.

- Confirm whether the method works on your operating system or Steam Deck.
- Find out whether the game transfers all progress or only progress within the demo’s limits.
- Follow the game’s instructions on whether Steam Cloud must be enabled for both apps.
