Unified Remote is the closest KDE Connect alternative if you mainly want to use your phone as a computer’s mouse, keyboard, or media remote. For viewing and controlling a computer remotely, consider RustDesk or AnyDesk instead: they are remote-desktop and support tools, not simply phone-based input remotes. KDE Connect itself may already cover the job, with a virtual trackpad, presentation remote, and media controls alongside file and link sharing, notifications, and custom commands.
Choose by the kind of control you need
A phone can control a computer in two different ways. A remote-input app turns the phone into a convenient mouse, keyboard, or media controller, often while you are near the computer. A remote-desktop app connects you to the computer’s screen and lets you interact with it from elsewhere. The distinction matters: the closest substitute for KDE Connect’s trackpad is not necessarily the best tool for remote support or full desktop access.
- For local mouse, keyboard, media, or app controls: Start with Unified Remote.
- For remote desktop access and a self-hosting option: Look at RustDesk.
- For remote access or support: AnyDesk may fit, but check its platform and device limitations first.
- Before switching: Check KDE Connect’s existing features; it offers more than a virtual trackpad.

Unified Remote: the closest like-for-like alternative
Unified Remote is the most direct match if your goal is to control a computer from your phone rather than view a remote desktop. Its official site lists mouse, keyboard, media, and screen controls, plus more than 100 app remotes. It also lists file browsing and power functions such as Wake-on-LAN. The app is listed for Android, iPhone, and iPad, with computer clients for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Raspberry Pi.

That breadth makes it a practical first candidate for someone replacing KDE Connect’s trackpad or media controls. The “100+ app remotes” figure is Unified Remote’s own product count, not an independently audited comparison. Check the current client requirements for your computer before relying on a particular operating-system version.
RustDesk: for broader remote desktop access
RustDesk’s documentation lists clients for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Web. It is the more relevant choice when you need to connect to and interact with a computer remotely, rather than just use your phone as a nearby input device.

RustDesk documents a self-hosting option and describes peer-to-peer connections with end-to-end encryption based on NaCl. Self-hosting is not automatic: you need to configure the required infrastructure. The documentation distinguishes a free open-source server from a Professional Server available for purchase. These documented features do not establish how a particular setup will perform or verify its security in practice.
AnyDesk: check platform and device support before choosing
AnyDesk’s Android support documentation says Android does not allow remote input by default. Many devices therefore need an appropriate control plugin, and supported input can vary by device. The same page specifies Android 7.0 or later for Android remote control. Confirm support for your exact model and app combination before depending on it.

Linux session type and Apple-device restrictions can also determine whether AnyDesk works for your use case. Its supported-platform documentation says incoming Linux sessions require Xorg; Wayland supports outgoing sessions only. It also says iOS/iPadOS remote control is unavailable because of vendor restrictions, and that an outgoing client requires payment. AnyDesk’s mobile-support page lists features including a file manager, clipboard, Wake-on-LAN, session recording, privacy mode, and tutorials; availability may depend on the device and setup.

If your main reason for switching is to get a wireless mouse or media remote, KDE Connect may already meet that need. Its project site lists a virtual trackpad, presentation remote, and media controls. It also describes file and link sharing, phone notifications and replies, and customizable commands. Compare the features you actually use with the alternatives’ platform requirements before replacing it.

How to make the choice
- Decide whether you need input controls or a remote desktop. For a phone-based mouse, keyboard, or media controller, try Unified Remote first. If you need to see and control the computer remotely, compare RustDesk and AnyDesk instead.
- Check both ends of the connection. Verify that the phone app and computer client support your operating systems. For Linux users considering AnyDesk, establish whether the computer session is Xorg or Wayland.
- Check permissions and setup. For AnyDesk on Android, confirm whether your device needs a control plugin. For RustDesk self-hosting, account for configuring and maintaining the infrastructure.
- Review current costs and terms. RustDesk documents a free open-source server and a Professional Server available for purchase; AnyDesk documents a paid outgoing client in the platform context above.
