Use the brand’s retailer locator, distributor list, or support team to verify authorization for your country, product, and sales channel. A logo, polished site, or HTTPS connection alone proves neither brand ownership nor retailer approval.
How to verify a brand’s official website
- Begin at a source you already trust. Use the brand’s corporate website, a support document, product manual, or authentic account you recognize. Follow its link to the shopping site rather than relying on an ad or search result.
- Confirm the destination another way. Check that a separate brand-controlled page, such as a support page, points to the same domain. A brand name in a URL’s subdomain or path does not mean the brand controls the host; inspect the registrable domain—the part identifying the site owner.
- Check the domain character by character. Look for misspellings, extra words, unexpected endings, or subtle substitutions. Brand names, logos, and product photos can be copied. lululemon, for example, warns about counterfeit sites using variations of its name and design in its official guidance.
- Interpret HTTPS correctly. HTTPS encrypts the connection to the domain shown in your browser. It does not verify who owns that domain or whether the seller will ship the product.
Search-result snippets, paid ads, trust badges, and professional design are not substitutes for confirmation from the brand. Cole Haan likewise advises shoppers to contact customer service when indicators do not settle whether a site is official or authorized: Cole Haan Brand Protection.
How to check whether a retailer is authorized
- Open the brand’s own retailer locator or distributor page. If you cannot find one, contact support through contact details on a brand-controlled site—not details supplied by the seller whose status you are checking.
- Match the precise retailer identity. Compare the name and domain on the listing with the brand’s information. A similar trading name or an authorized parent company does not automatically confirm every affiliated website.
- Match the scope. Confirm that approval covers the relevant country, product line, and sales channel. Retailer authorization can be limited and can change over time.
- Ask for written confirmation if the listing is unclear. Give the brand the exact retailer name and URL, product, country, and channel. Keep the response with your order records.
Brand guidance illustrates why confirmation should be specific: Vera Bradley directs shoppers to its locator for brand and outlet stores and authorized retail partners, while Ariat, Dickies, Tommy Hilfiger, and Murad publish their own retailer guidance. These are each brand’s policies, not a universal authorization system.
How to verify a seller on a marketplace
A marketplace may show offers from the brand, an authorized retailer, or an unrelated seller on the same product page. Check the seller attached to the exact offer you intend to buy, including the selected size, color, or other variation. Do not assume that a marketplace’s name, the product listing, or another offer on the same page identifies your seller.
#1 Best Overall
- Record the seller-of-record name and, where shown, its business details.
- Compare that seller with the brand’s current retailer guidance for the country and product.
- Check brand-specific marketplace rules. Murad, for example, publishes a policy for its Amazon offers; that policy should not be treated as a rule for other brands or all Amazon listings.
If the marketplace does not make the seller clear, ask the marketplace or brand before placing the order. Recheck the seller at checkout in case the selected offer changes.
Authorization is not the same as authenticity, warranty, or returns
Retailer authorization answers whether the brand recognizes a seller for a stated scope. It is not, by itself, proof that a particular item is genuine, that a warranty applies, or that the brand will handle returns or support. Check the brand’s warranty terms and the retailer’s return policy for the exact purchase route. Also distinguish authorization from a business-identity check: a directory such as authorized.by describes its own model for brand-issued and revocable authorization, separate from company identity verification; it is not a universal standard.

- The domain linked from the brand differs from the checkout domain, or the site identity is unclear.
- The brand does not list the retailer and support cannot confirm the seller for the relevant market, product, and channel.
- The marketplace offer’s seller differs from the seller you checked, or the seller changes before checkout.
- Payment details identify an unexpected person or business, or the payment route does not match the seller’s stated identity.
Do not proceed just because the offer has a badge, copied brand imagery, or a steep discount. Contact the brand using a support route you found independently and wait for a clear answer. This process reduces uncertainty; it cannot guarantee that a site, seller, item, payment, or future transaction is safe. Recheck current information before buying because domains, retailer lists, and warranty terms may change.
