A Steam Demo is a free sample meant to help you decide whether to buy a game. A Steam Playtest is a free, developer-managed test used to gather feedback. “Prologue” is not a formally defined Steam application type in Valve’s documentation; it is a label some developers use for a free game, so the listing itself must tell you what you will play.

What a Steam Demo gives you
Steam describes Demos as a way for customers to try a game before purchasing. They are usually a small playable portion that demonstrates core mechanics, but the amount and type of content depend on the game. A Demo is free, and developers can choose whether it has a separate store page or is presented through the main game’s page. Valve’s Demos guide also notes that Steam does not currently support multiplayer matchmaking between a full game and its Demo.
Steam’s developer guidance says a Demo should represent the game’s quality and be long enough to interest players without making them feel they have experienced everything. Steam generally recommends releasing a Demo at launch, while recognizing that a pre-launch Demo can be useful when players need to try the game to understand it. This is guidance, not a promise that a Demo will increase sales or produce a particular result.
What changes when you join a Steam Playtest
A Playtest is for testing, not simply a preview packaged under a different name. Steam presents signup on the main game’s page. Developers can control how many players get access, gate participation, and turn the Playtest off. Requesting access is not a guarantee that you will be admitted. Steam’s Playtest guide calls it a free, low-risk way for developers to gather playtesting data without managing keys or risking effects on the main game’s reviews and wishlists.

- Playtest activity does not affect the main game’s wishlist, refund policy, trading cards, or achievements.
- You cannot review the actual game based on Playtest participation.
- A Playtest is not confidential by default: participants are not under an NDA simply because they joined.
- Developers cannot charge for Playtest access or monetize it with in-game transactions. Steam says developers ready to charge for a work-in-progress game should use Early Access instead.
What “Prologue” means on a Steam listing
Steam’s documentation does not give “Prologue” a standard technical meaning. It only mentions that developers have used free “Prologue” games. Treat the word as the developer’s label, not a guarantee about length, relationship to the main game, save compatibility, or whether the listing is a test. Use the specific store description to determine what is playable and how it relates to the full game.
How to choose what to try
- Check the purpose. A Demo is a sample for prospective buyers; a Playtest is intended to gather feedback. “Prologue” requires reading the listing because Steam does not standardize the term.
- Check the actual content. Read the store description for what missions, modes, or features are included. The label does not specify the amount of playable content.
- Check access and timing. A Playtest may be gated or deactivated by its developer. Do not assume a request grants access or that it will remain available.
- Check how it is listed. A Demo may have an optional separate store page; Playtest signup is on the main game page and the Playtest has no unique store page.
