To convert a CSV to Excel, open or import the text file, check that Excel parsed its values correctly, then use File > Save As and choose Excel Workbook (.xlsx). Opening a CSV in Excel alone does not convert it: a CSV is plain delimited text, while an .xlsx file can retain workbook features such as formatting, charts, and multiple worksheets.

Choose the right way to import a CSV

Method Best for Control and repeatability
Open the CSV directly A simple file that needs no special parsing Fast, but Excel uses current default data-format settings
Data > From Text/CSV Checking delimiters and previewing data before loading More import control than direct opening
Power Query transformation Repeated cleanup or shaping Import steps can be retained and repeated
Text Import Wizard Explicit delimiter, text qualifier, encoding, or column-type choices Detailed controls; legacy feature
Rename .csv to .txt, then open Forcing the Text Import Wizard for a CSV A workaround that exposes wizard controls
UTF-8 import route CSV files containing non-ASCII characters Choose the route based on whether the file has a BOM
Power Query from Folder Combining similarly structured CSV files Repeatable batch import, provided file schemas align
IMPORTCSV or IMPORTTEXT Formula-led imports, when the functions are available Function options vary; results do not automatically refresh

For a quick, uncomplicated file, direct opening is usually sufficient. Use an import preview or the wizard when leading zeros, delimiters, dates, encoding, or regional number formats matter. Choose Power Query for recurring cleanup or a folder of similarly structured files.

1. Open a CSV directly in Excel

  1. In Excel, select File > Open, browse to the CSV, and open it.
  2. Check dates, numbers, and identifiers, especially values such as account numbers that begin with zero.
  3. Select File > Save As, then choose Excel Workbook (.xlsx).

Excel opens the CSV in a workbook view, but the original file remains a text file unless you save a workbook copy. Direct opening interprets columns using Excel’s current default data-format settings, which can alter how values appear. For example, a numeric-looking identifier with leading zeros may lose them.

2. Import with Data > From Text/CSV

  1. In Excel, select the Data tab and choose From Text/CSV under the Get Data or Get & Transform Data options.
  2. Choose the CSV file and inspect the preview. Confirm the delimiter and how the columns are split.
  3. Load the data to a new worksheet or select the available option to choose a destination.
  4. Check the imported values, then save a copy as Excel Workbook (.xlsx).

The preview helps catch a wrong delimiter or unexpected column parsing before the data is placed in the sheet. If the preview is not right, do not load it unchanged; adjust the import settings or use the transformation controls.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Import and transform with Power Query

  1. Choose Data > From Text/CSV and select the CSV.
  2. In the preview, select Transform Data.
  3. In Power Query, make the needed changes to rows, columns, or data types, then load the result into Excel.
  4. Review the loaded data and save the workbook as .xlsx.

Power Query is useful when the same cleanup needs to be applied again: the workbook can retain the query steps rather than relying on a one-off manual edit. Check any automatically detected types before loading, particularly for dates, identifiers, and locale-sensitive numbers.

4. Use the legacy Text Import Wizard

Microsoft retains the Text Import Wizard as a legacy feature for backward compatibility. To make its From Text (Legacy) command available in Excel, go to File > Options > Data and enable it. Then use Data > Get Data > Legacy Wizards > From Text.

  1. Select the text file to import and choose whether the data is Delimited or Fixed width.
  2. Set the file origin or character set, delimiter, and text qualifier as appropriate.
  3. Inspect the preview. A text qualifier such as a quotation mark lets a comma inside quoted text remain part of one field rather than splitting it into two columns.
  4. Set column data formats deliberately. Choose text for identifiers whose leading zeros must be preserved.
  5. Finish the import, check the worksheet, and save it as .xlsx.

This route is especially useful when automatic type detection would change values or when the file uses a delimiter other than a comma.

5. Force the wizard for a CSV by changing its extension

If Excel does not show the Text Import Wizard for a CSV, Microsoft’s documented workaround is to change the file extension from .csv to .txt before opening it, or to connect to the text file through the import flow. This is a way to invoke the wizard, not a conversion of the file’s contents.

  1. Make a copy of the CSV if you want to preserve the original filename.
  2. Change the copy’s extension from .csv to .txt.
  3. Open or import the text file and use the wizard to select delimiters and column formats.
  4. After checking the result, save the workbook as .xlsx.

6. Import a UTF-8 CSV correctly

For a UTF-8 CSV saved with a byte order mark (BOM), Microsoft says you can open the file normally in Excel. If it has no BOM, use Data > Get Data > From Text/CSV or Get Data From Text so Excel can import it through the data-import route. After loading, inspect names and other non-ASCII characters for garbling before saving as .xlsx.

7. Combine CSV files from a folder with Power Query

  1. In Excel, choose Data > Get Data > From File > From Folder, then select the folder.
  2. Review the listed files to ensure the folder contains the files you intend to combine.
  3. Choose a Combine option and inspect the resulting preview.
  4. Check file origin, delimiter, and detected data types before loading.
  5. Validate the combined data, then save the workbook as .xlsx.

Combining is most reliable when the files have consistent column headers, data types, and numbers of columns. If files differ in structure, the combined output may not represent each source file as intended; resolve the schema differences or import the files separately.

8. Use IMPORTCSV or IMPORTTEXT when available

Microsoft documents IMPORTCSV as a simplified function for comma-delimited UTF-8 data and IMPORTTEXT as a configurable function with delimiter, encoding, locale, and row-selection options. These are not universal alternatives to the standard import commands: Microsoft’s support page lists IMPORTTEXT availability for Microsoft 365 subscribers in the Windows Insiders Beta channel, Version 2502 Build 18604.20002 or later. Check that the function is available in your Excel installation before building a workflow around it.

Imported function results do not automatically refresh. Review the data and use the workbook’s refresh behavior where applicable; do not assume changes to the source file will appear in the result immediately.

Check parsing before you save

  • Leading zeros: Import identifiers as text if values such as 00127 must remain unchanged.
  • Dates and numbers: Confirm that Excel interpreted values using the intended regional conventions. Power Query uses the operating system’s locale by default; a locale selected for a query remains with the workbook when shared.
  • Delimiter and quotes: Confirm that fields are split into the intended columns and that quoted commas stay inside their fields.
  • Character encoding: Check accented letters and other non-ASCII characters after UTF-8 import.
  • File size: Microsoft’s stated text import/export limit is 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. Files exceeding those limits cannot be fully handled through Excel’s documented text import/export capacity.

Save the result as an Excel workbook

After validating the imported data, choose File > Save As and select Excel Workbook (.xlsx). This creates a workbook that can retain Excel formatting and features. Saving back to CSV or another text format removes formatting, and a text export saves only the active worksheet. Keep the .xlsx copy when you need workbook structure or features such as multiple sheets and charts.

Microsoft Support’s Text Import Wizard guidance explains the legacy import controls; see also its guidance on importing or exporting text files, opening UTF-8 CSV files, combining files from a folder with Power Query, setting a Power Query locale, and Microsoft’s pages for the IMPORTTEXT function and IMPORTCSV function.
