The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless uses hybrid adaptive active noise cancellation (ANC) to reduce surrounding noise; Transparency Mode does the opposite by letting ambient sound through so you can hear people and announcements. You can switch between the modes with a double-tap on an earcup or in the Sennheiser app, and adjust transparency intensity in the app.
How ANC works on the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless
Sennheiser describes the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless as having hybrid adaptive ANC, supported by eight microphones—four in each earcup. In general, ANC microphones monitor environmental sound and processing generates sound intended to counter some of it at the ear. The result is reduced noise, not silence.
“Hybrid” commonly refers to using microphones that monitor sound from both outside and inside the earcup. The exact design and algorithms vary by product. Sennheiser confirms the MOMENTUM 5’s hybrid adaptive system and microphone count, but its cited product information does not specify each microphone’s placement or the headphone’s detailed signal-processing chain. Philips’ ANC explainer provides general context for the hybrid approach; it does not establish the MOMENTUM 5’s precise implementation.
What Transparency Mode does
Transparency Mode uses the headphones to let ambient sound reach you, which can help you hear announcements or have a brief conversation without taking them off. Its intensity is adjustable. It is not necessarily identical to listening with no headphones: Sennheiser’s manual says that even at maximum intensity, the MOMENTUM 5 continues to suppress some disturbing low-frequency noise. The manual also notes that transparency is unavailable during phone calls.

ANC and Transparency Mode compared
| Mode | Purpose | What it does | Control |
|---|---|---|---|
| ANC | Reduce surrounding noise | Uses microphones and processing to reduce some ambient sound reaching the ear. | Toggle from Transparency Mode with a double-tap on the flat side of an earcup, or use the app. |
| Transparency Mode | Hear surroundings while wearing the headphones | Lets ambient sound through; some low-frequency noise remains suppressed even at maximum intensity. | Toggle from ANC with a double-tap on the flat side of an earcup; adjust intensity in the app. |
How to switch modes
- Use the earcup: Double-tap the flat side of either earcup with one finger to switch between ANC and Transparency Mode, as described on Sennheiser’s support page.
- Use the app: Open the Sennheiser app to switch modes or fine-tune them. Sennheiser’s MOMENTUM 5 Wireless manual describes the available transparency intensity adjustment.
What Sennheiser’s ANC comparison means
Sennheiser says the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless achieves “up to 3 times better noise cancellation across midrange frequencies” than the MOMENTUM 4 Wireless. That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independently measured result; the cited product page does not state the comparison’s test method. It should not be read as a claim that the MOMENTUM 5 cancels every sound or performs three times better at every frequency.
Sennheiser lists eight microphones, four per side, on its MOMENTUM 5 Wireless product page.
