Don’t open a suspicious link just to see where it goes. Preview its destination without activating it, check whether the real domain matches the organization named in the message, and verify the message’s claim through an official app, saved bookmark, or contact route you find independently. Browser warnings and URL scanners can add useful signals, but neither a clean result nor a familiar-looking message proves a link is safe.

Use this check-before-opening sequence

  1. Pause when a message asks for something sensitive or urgent

Be especially cautious if an unexpected email, text, or chat asks you to enter a password, make a payment, share a one-time code or personal information, or act immediately. A message can imitate a company or person you recognize. Microsoft advises not opening links or attachments in messages you suspect are scams. Microsoft’s phishing guidance and the FTC’s advice on phishing scams recommend verifying suspicious messages rather than trusting their appearance.

  2. Preview the destination without clicking

On a computer, move the pointer over the link and read the address preview or status-bar destination. Compare the address with the text shown in the message. Pay attention to the controlling domain—the part of the address that identifies the site—not a familiar company name appearing elsewhere in a long URL. Look for misspellings, extra words, or an unrelated domain. Microsoft recommends hovering over suspicious links and comparing the displayed address with the link text.

If you cannot see the destination clearly, the preview is obscured, or the link is shortened, leave it unopened and verify the message through another route. A preview reveals where the link appears to lead; it does not establish that the destination is harmless. HTTPS or a padlock is not proof that a site belongs to the organization it claims to represent: an encrypted connection does not authenticate the sender’s identity.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  3. Check the message’s claim independently

If a message says an account is locked, a package is delayed, or a payment failed, open the service’s official app or type an address you already know. You can also use a saved bookmark or find the organization’s phone number on a bill, membership card, or official website. Do not sign in through the unexpected message’s link or rely on contact details provided only in that message.

  4. Treat browser and device warnings as a stop signal

Browsers and security tools may compare URLs with known or reported unsafe sites. Microsoft Defender SmartScreen checks URLs against a dynamic online list of reported phishing, malware, exploit, and scam sites. If a warning appears, stop rather than proceeding because the message claims the page is legitimate.

No warning is not a clean bill of health. A list-based tool may not flag a new or unreported threat, so the absence of a warning does not prove a destination is safe. Reputation checks are one layer, not a substitute for independently confirming the request.

  5. Use URL scanners only when sharing the link is acceptable

A URL reputation scanner can provide additional signals, but it cannot authenticate the sender’s story or guarantee that a page is safe for every user or at a later time. Check the scanner’s submission terms before using it. VirusTotal says standard URL submissions are added to its dataset for community access, and its documentation says reports may be shared with the public community and examining partners. Do not submit links containing password-reset tokens, invitation codes, private document paths, personal information, or confidential identifiers.

VirusTotal documents a separate Private Scanning service that requires a Private Scanning license. Its documentation says analyses are limited to the submitting organization and retained for a configured period, but the material remains on VirusTotal infrastructure. This is not the same as an ordinary public scan or local-only processing. See VirusTotal’s URL submission documentation, its standard and private scanning overview, and its Private Scanning documentation for the service details.

  6. Report suspicious messages or sites

Use the phishing-report feature in your email or messaging service when available. Microsoft also documents an option to report an unsafe site in Edge, and the FTC provides routes for reporting phishing. Labels and controls vary by service, so use the relevant provider’s current instructions. Reporting is safer than opening a suspicious link to investigate it. See Microsoft’s Edge unsafe-site reporting guidance and the FTC’s reporting site.

What each check can—and cannot—tell you

Check What it helps establish What it cannot establish
Hover or destination preview Whether the visible destination appears to match the link text and expected organization. Whether the page itself is benign.
Independent verification Whether the organization confirms the claimed account or transaction issue. Anything beyond the specific claim you checked; use contact details found outside the message.
Browser or device reputation warning Whether the tool recognizes the URL as reported or suspicious. That an address with no warning is safe; new or unreported pages may not be listed.
Public URL scanner Additional reputation and vendor signals. That the sender’s claim is genuine; submitting may share the URL and scan report.
Service reporting control Lets the provider review a suspicious message or site. Immediate removal or a particular outcome; controls and labels vary by service.

When a message asks you to sign in, pay, disclose personal information, or act urgently, independently verifying the claim is the most useful next step. Microsoft Support puts the caution plainly: “If you see signs of a scam and are suspicious of a message, better safe than sorry.”
