Tokenized stocks can trade after U.S. exchanges close because a separate platform may continue matching buyers and sellers—or allow token transfers—on its own schedule. That does not mean the underlying U.S.-listed share is trading continuously. Whether a token represents the share itself, an indirect interest in a share held by a custodian, or only price-linked exposure also determines what rights the holder has.
What “tokenized stock” means
A tokenized security is a financial instrument represented as a crypto asset, with its ownership record kept wholly or partly on one or more crypto networks. In a January 28, 2026 staff statement, the SEC described issuer-sponsored and third-party tokenization models. The statement is staff guidance, not a Commission rule, regulation, or Commission-approved statement.
For a token described as a stock, distinguish these three structures:

Investor.gov describes the same core distinction: a token that tracks a share’s price is not automatically a share in the company. Uniswap Labs likewise says tokens offered through its interface are third-party tokens, not the referenced shares, and that—absent contrary issuer terms—they do not provide ownership, voting, or dividend rights. Backing, rights, structure, and redemption terms can vary by issuer.

Why trading can continue after the U.S. close
The primary exchange for a U.S.-listed share and a venue that trades a related token are separate systems. If the token venue is active, its participants can trade the token while the underlying share’s regular U.S. session is closed. A blockchain may also permit a token to move between compatible addresses at any time. Neither fact guarantees that a buyer, a live quote, or a fair price will be available.

MetaMask’s documentation says Ondo Global Markets generally aligns trading availability and liquidity to a 24/5 schedule, from Sunday 8:00 p.m. EST to Friday 7:59 p.m. EST. It also notes that onchain trades may technically occur at any time. Those are provider-specific details, not universal token-market hours. Outside Ondo’s defined trading hours, liquidity may be lower, volatility higher, and quotes limited or unavailable.
MetaMask lists pre-market, regular, post-market, and overnight sessions for the Ondo Global Markets products it supports, but does not make that schedule a rule for all tokenized stocks. Its documentation labels the times EST; check the provider’s current market-status information for live availability rather than assuming the listed windows apply everywhere or year-round.

An off-hours token price comes from activity in that token’s own market. The underlying share may not have a contemporaneous regular-session price, so a token quote need not match the price seen at the U.S. close or the price at the next open. The available information does not establish one pricing formula used across platforms; how a product tracks or references its share is venue- and product-specific.

Not necessarily. “Onchain at any time” describes a technical possibility, not a promise that a platform supports trading around the clock. A provider can limit when it accepts or displays trades, and even when a transfer is technically possible, that does not ensure a usable quote or an available counterparty.

Outside an actively supported window, market quality can deteriorate. MetaMask warns of lower liquidity, higher volatility, and unavailable quotes outside supported hours. OKX’s Europe risk information warns that sharp price moves and wider spreads can occur outside U.S. market hours and on weekends. A displayed price may therefore be less actionable than it appears, and a trade may execute at a materially different price from the last visible quote.
What to check before treating a token as stock ownership
- Legal claim: Identify whether the product is issuer-sponsored, a custodial entitlement, or synthetic exposure. The SEC staff taxonomy and Investor.gov explanation describe why those distinctions matter.
- Issuer and custody chain: Find who creates the token, who holds any underlying shares, and what happens if the token issuer or custodian fails. The SEC staff notes that third-party token structures can expose holders to risks associated with the token issuer, including bankruptcy. OKX also identifies issuer and custody risk.
- Shareholder and corporate-action rights: Read the product terms for voting, dividends, and other rights rather than inferring them from the token’s name or price tracking. OKX notes that providers can differ in dividend mechanics, withholding treatment, custodians, and credit profiles.
- Trading versus transfer rules: Check the provider’s supported trading hours separately from whether the token can be transferred onchain. Look for current market status, quote availability, spread, and liquidity.
- Redemption and withdrawals: Confirm how the token can be redeemed or withdrawn and what asset is delivered. OKX says its withdrawals may settle in a supported issuer token available at the time; terms may differ across providers.
- Location and account eligibility: Availability depends on product and jurisdiction. OKX says access depends on region and account eligibility, while Uniswap Labs says tokens may not be available to all people or jurisdictions.
What exchange tokenization plans mean for current traders
Nasdaq announced on March 9, 2026 that it intends to develop an issuer-centered equity-token design that integrates blockchain records with an issuer’s official share register. Nasdaq said it expects the program and additional DLT-based issuer services to be available starting in H1 2027. This is a forward-looking company announcement, not a description of a live retail product, and it does not establish that today’s third-party tokens carry ordinary-share rights. Nasdaq President Tal Cohen described the rationale this way: “We believe that public companies should always remain at the center of the equity market ecosystem.”
