If you know the behavior you want to control but not the policy’s name, search Administrative Templates by keyword in Group Policy Management Editor. Start with a few plain-language terms, then check each result’s description, policy path, scope, and supported Windows versions. Microsoft’s release-specific Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet is a useful second way to search.
Search Administrative Templates by keyword
- Open the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC), edit the relevant Group Policy Object (GPO), and choose the appropriate branch: Computer Configuration or User Configuration.
- Right-click Administrative Templates and select Filter Options.
- Enable Keyword Filters. Enter a few words that describe the behavior, choose a match type—Any, All, or Exact—and select which fields to search: Policy Setting Title, Help Text, and/or Comment. Apply the filter to display matching settings.
- Start with Any for a broad search. If there are too many results, try All or Exact. If no result appears, try synonyms or the feature’s name as users see it. These are practical search tactics; the match options themselves are documented by Microsoft.
- Select promising settings and read their descriptions. Confirm the full policy path, whether it is under Computer or User Configuration, and which Windows versions it supports before deciding it controls the behavior you need. Microsoft describes the filter options in its GPMC guidance.
The keyword filter searches Administrative Template settings, not every type of Group Policy item. Microsoft notes that “Filters do not work with Classic Administrative Templates.” The cited GPMC instructions are on a legacy documentation page, so labels or interface details may vary by Windows and management-console version.
Use Microsoft’s settings spreadsheet as a second search route
When the editor filter does not surface a suitable candidate, use the Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet for the Windows release you manage. Microsoft says these spreadsheets list computer and user Administrative Template settings and can be filtered by spreadsheet columns.

These are release-specific references, not a single list that should be assumed to describe every Windows version. Filter for words related to the desired behavior, then compare candidates against the target release and the editor’s policy description.

If a policy is missing, check the Administrative Templates in use
The settings shown in the editor depend in part on the Administrative Template files it reads. Microsoft documents ADMX template files and their corresponding language-specific ADML files, including their use in a domain Central Store. A missing, mismatched, or older template set can explain why a setting is absent from the editor.
For Central Store guidance, see Microsoft’s page on creating and managing the Group Policy Administrative Templates Central Store. Microsoft cautions: “Use the ADMX download packages in only the Central Store scenario. Replacing files in c:WindowsPolicyDefinitions isn’t supported.” Do not treat copying a downloaded package over the local PolicyDefinitions folder as a general fix.

Check whether a policy or preference controls the behavior
When comparing ways to configure the same behavior, distinguish policy settings from Group Policy preferences. Microsoft states that policy settings take precedence over preferences when they conflict. Its explanation is in Group Policy preferences in Windows. This matters when an apparently correct setting seems to be overridden by another configuration.
