There is no universal compatibility percentage for these choices. The right one depends on whether the program uses machine code, memory or device access, DOS-specific features, graphics or sound, and whether you want to preserve the original interpreter or build a modern executable.
How do I run GW-BASIC on Windows 10 or 11?
Use DOSBox to run the original GW-BASIC DOS executable. GW-BASIC is a 16-bit DOS program and does not run directly on modern 64-bit Windows. The GW-BASIC hub recommends DOSBox as a multi-platform emulation route: GW-BASIC download and emulation information.
- Obtain a GW-BASIC DOS executable from a source you trust. The DOSBox route requires the executable; installing DOSBox alone does not provide GW-BASIC.
- Install DOSBox for your operating system, following the instructions for the specific DOSBox version you choose.
- Make the executable and your program files accessible within the DOSBox environment, then start GW-BASIC there and open or run the program using the interpreter’s commands.
The exact DOSBox commands and setup depend on the DOSBox version and host operating system, so use that version’s documentation rather than assuming one command sequence applies everywhere. The GW-BASIC hub supports DOSBox as the emulator path, but these steps are not a tested installation walkthrough.

Can I run old GW-BASIC .BAS files without DOS?
Often, you can try PC-BASIC, a modern interpreter whose documentation says it aims to faithfully emulate GW-BASIC 3.23. It is an alternative interpreter, not the original GW-BASIC executable. See the PC-BASIC documentation for supported and unsupported behavior.
PC-BASIC does not emulate DOS or a CPU. In particular, it cannot run machine-code routines; its documentation states, “Therefore, it is not possible to run machine code on PC-BASIC.” Programs that rely on DOS-specific IOCTL behavior or direct machine access may also need a full emulator such as DOSBox, Bochs, or VirtualBox instead.

For a program that uses ordinary BASIC language features, try it in PC-BASIC and check its documented limitations if it fails. Compatibility still depends on the individual program’s commands, files, graphics or sound requirements, and hardware assumptions.
When does QB64 Phoenix Edition make sense?
Choose QB64 Phoenix Edition when your goal is to adapt source code and produce a native executable, rather than reproduce the original GW-BASIC runtime. QB64 describes itself as an extended BASIC with QBasic/QuickBASIC compatibility. Its project documents native compilation for Windows 7 and later, Linux, and macOS Catalina and later; check the current release documentation for current platform support and setup details: QB64 Phoenix Edition project.

The project’s documented setup includes downloading the package for your operating system, using a folder with full write permissions on Windows, and installing Apple’s Xcode command-line tools before setup on macOS. On Linux, its instructions include running ./setup_lnx.sh. The IDE can edit .BAS files; F5 compiles and runs a program. These steps are project instructions, not a guarantee that a GW-BASIC source file will compile unchanged.
The GW-BASIC hub says QuickBASIC 4.5 can handle many, but not all, GW-BASIC programs. That is a reason to evaluate dialect differences and hardware-dependent code—not evidence that QB64 will run every GW-BASIC program without changes. The hub’s guidance is secondary context: GW-BASIC program and compatibility information.

What about Microsoft’s GW-BASIC source code?
Microsoft’s repository is a historical source-code reference, not a ready-to-run interpreter download. Microsoft says it contains the interpreter source as of 1983 and is maintained for historical reference. The repository has no build scripts, makefiles, build tools, or prebuilt executables, so downloading it does not by itself give you a working GW-BASIC program. The files are released under the MIT License. See Microsoft’s GW-BASIC repository.
What should you check if a program will not run?
- It will not start in Windows: GW-BASIC is a 16-bit DOS executable, so run it in a DOS emulator rather than launching it directly on modern 64-bit Windows.
- It fails in PC-BASIC: Check whether it uses machine code, DOS-specific behavior, direct memory or device access, or features outside PC-BASIC’s supported behavior. Use full CPU and DOS emulation if those dependencies are essential.
- It fails in QB64: Treat it as a porting problem. Check the source for GW-BASIC-specific syntax, commands, and hardware assumptions, and adjust the program for QB64’s QBasic/QuickBASIC-oriented implementation.
- You are looking at Microsoft’s repository for an executable: The repository contains source code but no prebuilt binaries or build tools; it is not an installer.
Historical context: GW-BASIC and MS-DOS
Microsoft’s GW-BASIC User’s Guide says it is designed for use with MS-DOS and that the documented version requires MS-DOS 3.2 or later. Those statements describe the historical interpreter and its manual, not compatibility with current Windows. The digitized guide is hosted at Microsoft GW-BASIC User’s Guide.

The GW-BASIC hub identifies version 3.23 as the last official commercial release, but its page gives conflicting release years. It is safer to identify the version without assigning a single release year: GW-BASIC version information.
