SDD makes feature-level intent, constraints, and acceptance criteria explicit; TDD guides implementation through a small, executable test-first loop. For AI-assisted coding, a practical combination is to specify and divide the feature into tasks, then use tests to drive each task and validate the result against the broader specification. Available sources do not establish that either method universally produces better AI-assisted coding outcomes.
What SDD and TDD mean
“SDD” is shorthand for specification-driven development, but the label is not used uniformly. Define the workflow you mean: it may involve writing a specification for one task, keeping a feature specification current over time, or treating the specification as the primary artifact from which software is produced.
Specification-driven development
In Microsoft’s June 10, 2026 account, SDD is a spec-first approach: requirements, guardrails, constraints, acceptance criteria, and edge cases are made explicit, then AI can help generate or refine code, tests, and supporting artifacts using that shared context. Microsoft’s Spec Kit workflow is described as constitution, specify, clarify, plan, tasks, implement, and validate. The broader purpose is to connect intent to implementation and validation across a feature or sequence of tasks. See Microsoft for Developers and the GitHub Blog.
Thoughtworks’ Birgitta Böckeler describes three levels of spec-driven work: spec-first, where a spec is written and used for a task; spec-anchored, where it is kept for feature evolution; and spec-as-source, where the spec remains primary and people edit it rather than the code. These labels help distinguish workflows that might otherwise be grouped under the same SDD name. Read Böckeler’s discussion of Kiro, spec-kit, and Tessl.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test-driven development
TDD shapes implementation one behavior at a time. The familiar cycle is red-green-refactor: write a test for the next behavior, confirm it fails because the behavior is missing, add code until it passes, then refactor while preserving the passing behavior. Martin Fowler also recommends listing likely test cases and choosing a useful next one before starting the loop. See Fowler’s explanation of TDD and Agile Alliance’s TDD overview.
How the approaches differ
| Question | Specification-driven development | Test-driven development |
|---|---|---|
| What it makes explicit | Requirements, constraints, scenarios, edge cases, plans, tasks, and intended validation. | A specific behavior, expressed as an executable test before its implementation. |
| Typical unit of work | A feature, change, or sequence of implementation tasks. | A small behavior or test case, repeated incrementally. |
| Feedback mechanism | Review the artifacts and check the implementation against the specification and acceptance criteria. | Run the test, verify that it fails for the intended reason, make it pass, and refactor. |
| Maintenance question | Does the specification remain accurate and useful as the software changes? | Do the tests remain focused, meaningful, and representative of required behavior? |
| Potential role for an AI assistant | Provide durable context and boundaries across planning and implementation. | Provide executable local feedback and help break implementation into small behaviors. |
This comparison describes the methods’ scope and feedback loops; it is not a measured ranking of their results.

How to combine SDD and TDD with an AI coding assistant
- Clarify the problem and constraints. Write a lightweight feature specification that states what the user needs, what is out of scope, and any relevant constraints.
- Define acceptance criteria and edge cases. Make the expected outcomes concrete enough for both a person and an assistant to interpret.
- Divide the work into bounded tasks. Keep tasks implementable and testable in isolation where possible. GitHub’s Spec Kit workflow describes this kind of task decomposition.
- Test-drive each behavior. For a task, ask the coding assistant to help create a test for the next behavior. Inspect the assertion and run the test before accepting implementation. Confirm that it fails for the expected reason, then implement until it passes and refactor.
- Validate the feature against the specification. Passing task-level tests does not by itself establish that the feature meets every acceptance criterion. Review the completed work against the broader intent and check whether the tests exercise the intended behavior.
A Thoughtworks practitioner report by Paul Sobocinski on using TDD with GitHub Copilot describes careful attention to whether a new test failed correctly before moving to implementation. The report also says Copilot sometimes generated functionality ahead of the tests and was less helpful with some larger refactoring suggestions. These are observations from that team’s experience, not findings that necessarily apply to every tool or project. See the Thoughtworks report on TDD with GitHub Copilot.
How to choose where to put the emphasis
Choose based on the uncertainty or coordination problem in front of you, rather than assuming one method is inherently faster or more reliable.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Scope: If intent is unclear across a feature, make the specification more explicit. If the next behavior is clear but its implementation is uncertain, TDD gives you a local feedback loop.
- Feedback speed: Consider whether an automated test can check the behavior quickly, and whether feature-level acceptance criteria are also needed.
- Requirement stability: Decide whether a specification will remain useful as the feature evolves or whether a task-level spec is sufficient.
- Maintenance: Account for the work of keeping specifications and tests aligned with the software’s actual behavior.
- Traceability: If the team needs to follow requirements through planning, implementation, and validation, a broader specification can help organize that work. If immediate local feedback is the priority, test-first development addresses that narrower need.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—show
Microsoft and GitHub describe SDD workflows, while Fowler and Agile Alliance explain TDD. Thoughtworks offers practitioner observations about using TDD with Copilot. These sources explain the approaches and illustrate how people use them, but they do not provide a controlled, direct comparison of SDD and TDD for AI-assisted coding. They therefore do not establish that SDD reduces defects, that TDD is always faster with AI, or that either approach is the universal winner.
