To reduce mobile data use, check which apps are consuming it, restrict cellular access for apps that can wait, and enable your phone’s data-saving mode. To avoid unexpected charges, also monitor usage and roaming rules through your carrier: your phone’s counter may not match what the carrier bills, and the carrier’s plan terms determine what happens when you reach an allowance.
Find out what is using mobile data
Start with your phone’s per-app usage list. It can show whether one app or service accounts for most of your cellular use, so you can limit that activity instead of disabling mobile data across the board.
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Cellular. Review the app list and usage totals. Turn cellular access off for apps that can wait until you’re on Wi-Fi. Apple says an app with cellular access disabled uses Wi-Fi only for that service: Apple’s guide to viewing cellular data usage.
- Check the usage period. iPhone statistics can help you track your own use, but you may need to reset them at the start of a billing period to compare periods consistently. Apple says your carrier has the most accurate current-period usage information.
On Pixel and other Android phones
- On Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > App data usage. Check the displayed date range and app breakdown. Other Android manufacturers may use different menu names or locations.
- Compare the period with your carrier’s billing cycle. A phone’s counter is useful for spotting high-use apps, not for establishing the carrier’s billable total.
Restrict background data without breaking essential apps
Data-saving modes reduce background activity, but may delay updates or limit apps that need to refresh when you are not using them. After turning one on, make exceptions only for services that genuinely need background cellular access.
Use Low Data Mode on iPhone
- Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options.
- Turn on Low Data Mode. Apple says it pauses automatic updates and background tasks when iPhone is not connected to Wi-Fi. Available options can vary by model, carrier, region, and plan.
Use Data Saver on Pixel or Android
- On Pixel, go to Settings > Network & internet > Data Saver and turn it on. Menu labels may differ on other Android phones.
- Most apps and services then get background data only over Wi-Fi, while apps you are actively using can still use mobile data. If an app must have background cellular access, add it under Unrestricted data. Google notes that some apps may not work as expected without this exception: Google’s instructions for limiting mobile data use.
Set a warning or limit, then verify it with your carrier
On supported Pixel versions, you can set a data warning below your plan allowance and optionally set a data limit. At the chosen limit, the phone turns mobile data off; features that depend on it may stop working. The warning and limit are device controls, not a substitute for the carrier’s usage and plan information.

Check your carrier’s app or account for current usage, the billing-period allowance, and any available alerts. Google warns that carriers may measure usage differently from the phone and recommends checking carrier measurements and plan limits: Google’s guidance on setting data warnings and limits.
Alerts and automatic consequences vary by provider and plan. For example, Google Fi describes account alerts and a speed-reduction threshold; that example does not mean every carrier offers the same controls. Read your own plan’s terms to learn whether reaching its allowance means slower speeds, overage fees, or stopped service for the rest of the billing period. Understand why cellular data can be used on Wi-Fi
A Wi-Fi connection does not always mean the phone is using Wi-Fi exclusively. On current iPhone software, Connectivity Assist can use cellular data alongside slow or unusable Wi-Fi. Apple’s support documentation, published September 14, 2026, cautions: “With Connectivity Assist turned on, you might use more cellular data.”
If cellular use on Wi-Fi is unexpected, inspect Settings > Wi-Fi and turn off Connectivity Assist if you do not want that cellular fallback. See Apple’s Connectivity Assist guidance.

Some Android devices also let you mark a capped Wi-Fi network as metered. On supported Pixel versions, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet, select the connected Wi-Fi network, then choose Network usage > Treat as metered. This helps the phone manage downloads and app data on a limited network; steps vary by Android version. See Google’s data-usage guidance.

Roaming charges and included destinations depend on your carrier and plan. Before traveling, confirm the rate or allowance for each destination and what happens if you exceed it. Do not assume roaming is always chargeable—or that it is always included.

Apple says turning off Data Roaming can help avoid charges, but access outside your carrier’s coverage may be affected. Check your carrier’s policy before changing the setting. A travel eSIM may be an alternative if your phone supports it and it covers your destination, but it is not guaranteed to be cheaper. Apple’s cellular data and roaming guidance directs customers to their carrier for plan-specific information.

Choose the right control for the problem
