Stellar wind is a stream of charged particles and magnetic fields flowing away from a star. It can disturb a planet’s magnetic surroundings, interact with its upper atmosphere, help create auroras, and contribute to atmospheric escape. Its effects vary with the star’s activity and the planet’s distance, atmosphere, gravity, and magnetic environment; stellar wind alone does not determine whether a world is habitable.

What stellar wind is

A stellar wind is an ongoing outflow of charged material and magnetic fields from a star. It is not ordinary air moving through space. The particles include protons and electrons, and the magnetic field carried with them shapes how the flow interacts with other magnetic fields and planetary environments. NASA defines the Sun’s version as the solar wind, which fills interplanetary space and reaches planets and smaller bodies. NASA’s solar-wind overview describes the basic flow and its variability.

The solar wind is the closest example astronomers can study directly, but winds from other stars can differ substantially. Near Earth, NASA gives a typical solar-wind speed of about 895,000 mph (1.4 million km/h); streams from coronal holes can reach about twice that speed. The speed, density, and composition vary with solar activity, so the typical figure is not a constant or a forecast for a particular day. NASA’s Universe glossary provides the speed description.

Stellar wind is not a coronal mass ejection

The wind is a continuing, variable outflow. A coronal mass ejection is a distinct large eruption that can add a stronger, temporary disturbance to the space environment. The two are related to stellar activity, but the terms do not describe the same event.

How the wind interacts with a planet

A planet’s magnetic field creates a region called a magnetosphere. When stellar wind encounters it, the flow is generally redirected and the magnetic environment changes shape. Earth’s magnetosphere is a dynamic, comet-shaped bubble compressed on the side facing the Sun. It is not an impermeable wall: most solar-wind flow is deflected, while some particles enter the near-Earth environment and can contribute to auroras. NASA explains these interactions in its magnetosphere overview.

A planet without a strong global magnetic field is not necessarily left without protection or interaction. Its atmosphere can itself respond to the incoming flow. Mars, for example, develops an ionopause where the solar wind meets its atmosphere. By contrast, airless objects such as the Moon and asteroids are directly exposed; particle bombardment can alter surface chemistry and eject material. NASA surveys examples across the solar system in The Solar Wind Across Our Solar System.

What happens to Earth

Earth’s magnetic field redirects most of the solar wind, but the interaction is ongoing. Some charged particles reach the near-Earth environment, and solar-wind disturbances can affect the magnetosphere and upper atmosphere. Auroras are one visible result of charged particles interacting with the atmosphere; they are not evidence that the magnetic field has simply failed.

What happens to other worlds

Magnetized planets redirect the wind and form magnetospheres whose size and shape change with conditions. Worlds with weak or no global magnetic field can still interact through their atmospheres, while airless bodies take the impact more directly. The outcome depends on the whole system, not a simple choice between “shielded” and “unshielded.” NASA’s Heliophysics Big Idea 3.2 discusses effects on planetary bodies and the heliosphere.

How stellar wind can affect an atmosphere

Atmospheric escape is the loss of atmospheric particles to space. Stellar activity can contribute to the conditions that make escape possible, but it is misleading to describe every case as wind simply stripping an atmosphere away. In NASA’s account of Proxima b, extreme ultraviolet radiation ionizes gases in the upper atmosphere, and charged particles can stream out along magnetic field lines. That process involves radiation, the atmosphere, and magnetic geometry as well as the stellar wind.

The atmosphere’s composition and structure, the planet’s gravity and size, its magnetic field, its orbit, and the star’s activity all matter. A magnetic field may redirect charged particles, but it does not by itself guarantee that an atmosphere will be retained. Conversely, a weak or absent global magnetic field does not alone establish that a planet has lost its atmosphere.

Why exoplanet wind effects are difficult to establish

For planets around other stars, researchers may model how a given combination of stellar activity, orbit, atmosphere, gravity, and magnetic field could affect atmospheric escape. A model explores outcomes under stated assumptions; it is not a direct measurement of the planet’s atmosphere or magnetic field.

NASA’s discussion of Proxima b reports a particular model estimate: under its assumptions, atmospheric loss could amount to an Earth-atmosphere equivalent over 100 million years, and even the model’s best-case scenario over 2 billion years. Those figures belong to that model, not to exoplanets generally. The account did not establish Proxima b’s magnetic state or directly measure its atmosphere. NASA space scientist Katherine Garcia-Sage summarized the broader point: “We need to understand a planet’s space weather environment to understand whether a planet is habitable.” NASA’s account of the Proxima b modeling gives the context.

What to compare when assessing a planet’s exposure

Stellar wind is one part of a coupled space-weather system. To compare two planets or estimate how exposed a world might be, consider these factors together:

  • Star type and activity: Different stars can produce very different outflows, and activity and associated radiation change over time.
  • Orbital distance: A close-in planet around an active star can encounter a different wind and radiation environment from Earth’s.
  • Atmosphere: Composition and structure shape where charged particles and radiation interact and how much material could escape.
  • Gravity and planet size: These affect how readily atmospheric material can escape.
  • Magnetic field and geometry: A planetary field can redirect charged particles, but its effects depend on the rest of the system.

A planet’s location in a star’s habitable zone therefore does not prove that it is habitable. Orbital temperature is only one consideration; stellar activity and the planet’s atmosphere and magnetic environment also matter.
