If wired broadband is unavailable at your address, check for local fixed wireless, satellite internet, or mobile broadband. Start with the FCC National Broadband Map, then confirm availability and terms directly with providers: coverage and service eligibility are address-specific.
Check which services reach your exact address
- Search the FCC map. Enter your service address in the FCC National Broadband Map. It shows reported fixed options—including fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, and fixed wireless—as well as mobile coverage.
- Confirm with providers. Contact any provider shown for your address and ask whether it can actually install or activate service there. A map listing or coverage area is not a guarantee of eligibility or usable service at your home.
- Challenge an inaccurate listing. If the map’s availability information appears wrong, use the FCC’s challenge process described on the map site.
For mobile service, check signal at the location and ask whether the provider allows the home-internet or hotspot plan you want. The FCC describes mobile broadband as a possible stopgap when fixed service is unavailable; its report says, “Mobile advanced telecommunications capability services allow consumers to access advanced telecommunications capability on the go.” FCC 24-27
Alternatives to wired broadband
Fixed wireless
Fixed wireless connects a home to a provider’s wireless network. Check local providers directly: availability depends on the address and the provider’s network. NTIA recognizes unlicensed fixed wireless as an alternative broadband technology in its BEAD guidance, but that does not establish a provider, plan, speed, price, or installation date for your home. NTIA BEAD FAQs NTIA BEAD technology guidance
Satellite internet
Satellite service may be worth checking when wired networks and local fixed wireless do not reach you. NTIA’s BEAD guidance recognizes low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellite as an alternative technology, but recognition in program guidance does not confirm that a particular service is available or suitable at your address. Ask providers about eligibility, equipment, installation, plan terms, and expected service for your location.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Mobile broadband and hotspots
If cellular service works at your home and a suitable plan is available, a phone’s hotspot feature or a dedicated mobile hotspot can share that connection with nearby devices. The hotspot is equipment or a phone feature—not an internet subscription. You still need mobile service, adequate signal, and a plan that permits the intended use. The FCC’s map can help you check reported coverage, but confirm the signal at home and the plan’s terms with the provider.
A dedicated 5G hotspot is relevant only if cellular coverage and a compatible plan are both available. The FCC material establishes the role of mobile broadband and hotspots generally; it does not establish the performance of any particular device.

Compare the practical trade-offs before choosing
Ask each provider the same questions so you can compare a real offer for your address. The federal sources cited here do not establish current provider-specific prices, data limits, installation costs, or measured performance at an individual home.
- Eligibility and signal: Is your exact address serviceable? For mobile options, is the signal usable where you will connect, and does the plan permit your intended home or hotspot use?
- Total cost: What is the recurring service charge, and are equipment, installation, or other fees additional?
- Data terms: Is there a data allowance or usage limit? What happens after you reach it?
- Performance for your needs: Ask about expected speed, latency, reliability, and capacity for the activities your household relies on. Federal guidance discusses technology requirements; it does not predict performance at your home.
- Installation and timing: Ask whether equipment, a clear connection path, or network construction is needed, and how long setup is expected to take.
Check whether Lifeline can help with service costs
Eligible consumers can check Lifeline for support toward voice service, broadband, or a bundle from participating providers. It is not a universal free-internet plan: eligibility and available offers depend on the consumer and provider. USAC says the basic $5.25 support remains available to eligible consumers subscribing to voice-only service through November 30, 2027; this is a program support amount, not the price of a broadband plan. Check the Lifeline Support website for current eligibility and participating-provider information.

Look for longer-term rural network expansion
USDA ReConnect funds rural broadband deployment through loans, grants, or combinations for areas without sufficient access. It funds projects to build networks; it is not a household application for a connection. Look for local awardees and providers that may serve your area, and check the USDA ReConnect program page for current status. The page currently says applications are not being accepted for processing, and that status may change. A project award does not guarantee service at a specific address or by a particular date. More program details are available in the ReConnect program resources.
