If a Sega Genesis game is missing from Nintendo Switch Online, the Expansion Pack will not unlock it: Nintendo’s Genesis collection is a selected catalog, not the full library. Check the current official game list first. If your title is absent, there is no confirmed way to add it to the Switch Genesis app, and Nintendo has announced no fixed schedule for additions.
Check whether the game is in Nintendo’s Genesis collection
-
Open Nintendo’s SEGA Genesis – Nintendo Switch Online page and look for the exact title. The displayed catalog is the authoritative check for what Nintendo currently offers; examples include Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star IV, Ristar, Shining Force II, ToeJam & Earl and The Revenge of Shinobi.
-
If it is listed, access it through the Nintendo Classics app with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo’s Classic Games Library page outlines the service and access route.
-
If it is not listed, having the Expansion Pack does not make that game playable in the Genesis app. Nintendo says classic-game collections will continue to grow, but “There is no set schedule for new releases.” It has not promised any particular missing game will be added. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics overview and FAQ for the current membership and release-schedule terms.

What to do if your game is absent
Check whether you already own SEGA Mega Drive Classics
SEGA says SEGA Mega Drive Classics for Switch was delisted for new purchases starting December 6, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. PST. According to SEGA’s SEGA CLASSICS support notice, updated November 19, 2025, people who already own the compilation retain it in their library and can download and play it. This may provide an existing owner another route to games included in that compilation, but SEGA’s notice does not establish that it contains every missing title. Store availability can vary by region, so check the relevant store if you need to confirm an existing entitlement.
Do not assume why Nintendo omitted a title
Nintendo’s published pages do not explain why any specific Genesis game is absent. They do not establish licensing, music rights, ownership or technical issues as the reason for a named omission. Unless Nintendo or the rights holder gives a specific explanation, the accurate answer to “Why is this game missing?” is that the reason has not been publicly established in the cited information.

Know what Nintendo’s sale policy does—and does not—mean
Nintendo Support says, “There are no plans to make the games available outside of the Nintendo Switch Online service.” That describes Nintendo’s stated plan for its classic-game collections; it does not mean every Genesis game is part of the service. It also does not turn a game missing from the live catalog into an individually purchasable Switch title.
How the available routes compare
| Route | Can it play the exact missing game? | Who can use it? | Runs on Switch? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo’s Genesis collection | Only if the title appears in Nintendo’s current catalog | Players with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership | Yes |
| SEGA Mega Drive Classics | Only if the game is included in the compilation; check its contents rather than assuming | Existing owners can still download and play it; SEGA says new purchases were delisted starting December 6, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. PST | Yes, for existing owners |
| Genesis console and cartridge | Potentially, if you have the game and compatible hardware | People with Genesis hardware and the relevant cartridge | No; this is a separate hardware route, not a way to play on Switch |
| SEGA Genesis Control Pad | No; a controller does not add games | Players who want the accessory for the official collection | It is designed for the collection; Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility with other software |
Membership, offline play and collection features
The Genesis collection requires the Expansion Pack tier, not just an unspecified Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says its classic games can be played offline, but an active member must connect to the internet at least once every seven days so membership can be verified. The collection also offers features such as rewind, save or suspend functions and online play for supported titles; these features apply to available games and do not add unlisted ones.

Does the Genesis Control Pad help with missing games?
No. Nintendo describes its SEGA Genesis Control Pad as an accessory for the collection, not a way to expand its catalog. It is optional, and Nintendo does not guarantee it works with other software. A Genesis console or cartridge is likewise not a Switch solution: it plays on Genesis hardware.
