A vagus nerve stimulator (VNS) delivers electrical pulses to the vagus nerve or its vicinity to change nerve signaling. In the U.S., FDA records describe implanted VNS systems for certain people with drug-resistant focal-onset seizures and a narrowly defined group of adults with treatment-resistant depression. Separate, external non-invasive devices are classified for migraine or cluster headache. These are different device types and indications—not one device proven for every condition.
What does a vagus nerve stimulator do?
The vagus nerve carries signals between the brain and organs. VNS uses electrical stimulation as a form of neuromodulation. For an implanted system, a generator and lead are placed under the skin and deliver stimulation to the left vagus nerve in the neck. An external device instead contacts the skin at the side of the neck and applies a low-voltage signal; the FDA-described device category includes a handheld unit with a battery, signal-generating and amplifying electronics, controls, and skin-contact surfaces, with conductive electrode gel.
These device descriptions explain how stimulation is delivered, not a complete biological explanation of how it affects every condition. FDA device records establish particular designs and labeled uses; they do not show that an unrelated electrical gadget has the same authorization or effect.
What conditions is VNS used for?
U.S. FDA records distinguish implanted VNS indications from non-invasive headache-device categories. The indication depends on the particular device and patient group.

Drug-resistant focal-onset seizures
The implanted VNS Therapy System is labeled as adjunctive therapy to reduce seizure frequency in patients aged four and older whose focal-onset seizures are refractory to antiseizure medication. “Focal onset” is the current terminology in the U.S. label; older materials may say “partial onset.” The FDA approved that terminology change in a 2026 supplement.
Chronic or recurrent treatment-resistant depression
FDA records describe an adjunctive, long-term implanted VNS indication for adults 18 or older experiencing a major depressive episode who have not had an adequate response to four or more adequate antidepressant treatments. This is a defined, specialist-managed indication—not a general treatment for depression. FDA labeling states, “VNS Therapy has not been determined to be a cure for depression.” Benefit may take months, results vary, and many patients continue antidepressant medication and/or electroconvulsive therapy.

Migraine and cluster headache
FDA classifications describe external, non-invasive VNS devices for headache indications: one category is intended for migraine headache, and another for cluster headache and reducing attack frequency. These categories are distinct from the implanted VNS Therapy System used for seizures or the specified depression indication. Check the exact model’s instructions and indication rather than assuming every external stimulator is intended for both headache types.
Other proposed uses
The FDA records cited here do not establish anxiety, inflammation, long COVID, weight loss, or general “vagus nerve tone” as approved uses of these devices. A condition being discussed or studied is not the same as an FDA-labeled indication.

Implanted VNS involves surgical and device-related risks. FDA labeling says VNS Therapy “is not a cure for epilepsy.” It also includes a contraindication against shortwave diathermy, microwave diathermy, or therapeutic ultrasound diathermy for people with an implanted system, and directs clinicians to follow the system’s MRI instructions.

- Tell healthcare professionals that you have an implanted VNS system before procedures or imaging.
- Follow the care team’s instructions for MRI and other treatments; do not assume a procedure is safe based only on its name.
- Use the instructions for the exact VNS model. External and implanted devices have different precautions.
How to assess a VNS device claim
- Identify the device type. Determine whether it is an implanted system or an external neck-applied model.
- Check the exact indication. Match the model’s labeling to the condition and patient group; headache, seizure, and depression indications are not interchangeable.
- Look for adjunctive-treatment language. For implanted seizure and depression uses described here, VNS is an add-on treatment, not a replacement for clinician-directed care.
- Confirm instructions and precautions. For an implant, discuss surgical, MRI, and diathermy issues with the treating team. For an external model, follow its own directions.
