Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To recover a self-hosted secrets manager, back up more than its database: preserve its persisted data, configuration, credentials, and any deployment-specific files or volumes required to run it. Use a consistent backup method supported by the exact product and storage backend, protect the resulting copies as sensitive data, and rehearse restoring them. There is no single backup procedure for every secrets manager; the steps below distinguish OpenBao from Bitwarden’s Docker and Helm deployments.
Plan what recovery must restore
Start by recording the product and version, deployment type, storage backend, and whether the database is built in or external. Then identify where persistent data lives and which configuration, secrets, certificates, scripts, and plugins are needed to bring the service back. A database copy on its own may not be a complete recovery set.
- Set recovery objectives. Decide how much recent data the service can afford to lose (the recovery point objective) and how long it can be unavailable (the recovery time objective). These depend on your service and operations; the cited product guides do not prescribe universal targets.
- Map dependencies. Record the backup method for each data store and volume, plus the configuration and deployment material needed to recreate the service.
- Choose a consistent capture window. Determine whether the product or backend requires the service to be offline, supports an atomic snapshot, or provides its own database backup process.
- Define access and retention. Decide who can retrieve backups, how copies are protected, where they are stored, and how long they are kept. Do not treat an unencrypted removable drive as a complete backup plan.
Backups and high availability solve different problems: a backup can restore an earlier state, while it does not by itself keep an individual server available after failure. Replication or a highly available setup does not remove the need for recoverable backups.
Use a product-specific, consistency-aware backup
Do not assume that two secrets managers use the same snapshot format or can safely be copied while running. For OpenBao, the appropriate method depends on its storage backend. Bitwarden documents separate recovery procedures for Docker and Helm. Follow the documentation for the deployed version and architecture rather than applying another product’s steps.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OpenBao: back up storage and operating material
OpenBao identifies two recovery concerns: the encrypted data in its storage backend and the configuration files and management scripts required to run the server. Its storage and recovery documentation notes that exact advice depends on the storage configuration. The page is labeled Development, so verify the instructions against the documentation for the release you run.
OpenBao says backups and restores are ideally performed while the service is offline. If that is not feasible, its guidance favors a backend that supports atomic snapshots, such as Integrated Storage; for backends without atomic-snapshot support, it recommends offline backups. Use the specific instructions for an officially supported backend, or the backend’s own backup and restore procedure where applicable.

OpenBao does not provide built-in automated snapshots in the cited guidance. It describes external automation options, including cron, systemd units for virtual machines, and a Kubernetes CronJob example. If you automate backups, ensure the schedule and method preserve the consistency guarantees required by your backend; automation does not make an unsuitable live copy safe.
Include configuration, service-management scripts, and a plan to reinstall user-installed plugins where relevant. Take a backup before upgrades and other major cluster changes. The same OpenBao guidance recommends backups before, but not during, many writes to the /sys API, with endpoint exceptions; because this advice is implementation-specific and the documentation is marked Development, consult the deployed release’s instructions before making it an operational checklist.

Bitwarden Docker: distinguish the built-in database from a full recovery copy
Bitwarden’s self-hosted backup guide says operators are responsible for their own backup procedures. For a Docker deployment using the built-in database, nightly database backups run while the mssql container is running and are retained in ./bwdata/mssql/backups for 30 days, according to the guide accessed October 7, 2026. That documented retention applies to this setup; it is not a general Bitwarden retention guarantee. Bitwarden Lite does not take these nightly backups, so its operators need to arrange a backup process.
A database backup is not the same as the broader disaster-recovery copy Bitwarden recommends for Docker. The guide recommends manually backing up the entire ./bwdata directory. Important contents include:

Keep the directory and its contents protected as sensitive material. For a restore from a nightly database backup, Bitwarden’s guide describes using SQL Server tools to restore the database and then restarting the instance. Follow its procedure only when the deployment matches the documented setup; do not expose actual credentials in scripts, examples, or recovery notes.
Bitwarden Helm: preserve Kubernetes and volume material
For a Helm deployment, Bitwarden’s guide identifies my-values.yaml, the Kubernetes Secrets object, and persistent volumes for data protection, attachments, and licenses as recovery material alongside the database backup. Its documented approach is to deploy a new Helm installation with the saved values and Secrets, then reattach the preserved volumes and database backup. Use the guide’s Helm-specific steps rather than the Docker directory procedure.

Restore without overwriting newer data by surprise
A restore returns the service to the snapshot’s point in time. OpenBao warns that changes made after the backup can be lost when an older copy is restored. Before replacing a live system, identify the snapshot’s timestamp, compare it with the outage or change timeline, and determine whether post-snapshot writes must be preserved or reconciled.
- Choose the recovery point. Select a known-good backup that matches the intended recovery objective, and verify which application data and deployment files it contains.
- Prepare the target environment. Recreate the compatible product version, storage backend, configuration, credentials, and dependencies required by that backup.
- Restore with the matching procedure. Use the backend-specific OpenBao instructions, Bitwarden’s Docker database restore steps, or Bitwarden’s Helm recovery approach as appropriate.
- Validate before returning service. Confirm the service starts, expected records and attachments are present, authentication works, and integrations or plugins that matter to your deployment are functional.
- Record the result. Note the backup used, restore steps, elapsed recovery time, missing dependencies, and any data gap. Update the runbook so the next recovery does not depend on memory.
Rehearse recovery in a controlled environment rather than waiting for an incident to discover missing keys, volumes, or configuration. The cited documentation does not set a universal rehearsal cadence; choose one that fits how often the system and its deployment change.
Protect backup copies as carefully as the live service
Backup sets can expose the secrets they are meant to protect. OpenBao notes that stored-data snapshots are encrypted, but configuration can still contain sensitive values such as a Transit auto-unseal token or TLS private key. Bitwarden’s recovery material may include database and certificate passwords, authentication-related data, Kubernetes Secrets, and other configuration. Limit access to backup destinations, protect removable media with encryption, and keep access to any decryption material controlled separately from the copy it unlocks.
Keep a recovery runbook with the exact product version, backend or deployment type, backup locations, required credentials and keys, restoration procedure, and validation checks. A backup that exists but cannot be accessed, interpreted, or restored is not a dependable recovery path.
